Research process by Dr.T.V.Rao MD
1. RESEARCH PROCESS
T.V.Rao MD
The Higher education irrespective of many limitations, expects one to be well versed with research, and
add newer knowledge to the progress of science, medicine engineering, and many other professional
courses. When starting your research, you may or may not have a clear question as what one can really
learn with methods, to explore the matters, but by starting with an idea and formulating this idea into a
question you will be able to review the literature already written on this topic which will likely help you
to refine and narrow your questions, and start working, to achieve your goals,
HOW TO START DOING YOUR RESEARCH- The first step to go with research/dissertations remain with
understanding by reviewing of the existing knowledge/literature. The great step remains to start with
understanding peer-reviewed documentation, and soon you will know what really happened in the past,
and next step is to review the current literature which is updated to recent advances, and soon one will
be on the path to acquaint the topic one has chosen to reach our goals.
Review of Literature Helps to make you familiar to understand what existing knowledge in the topic are
you have chosen to work
The review of literature also educates the researcher about what studies have been conducted in the
past, how these studies were conducted, and the conclusions in the problem area.
Identify important Concepts in your Topic.
•Once you have articulated your topic, try to pick out important concepts or keywords which you can
use when you search for articles. Today we can reach many matters s with is a click of a Mouse,
however, the Internet is a sea of knowledge how to reach the right place is a great challenge and many
times we lose most of the time with searching on GOOGLE,
NEVER FORGET - the Internet has no ready-made answers for your problems, today's internet acts
according to your own intelligence, never forget to search for specific words which are related to
research,
Go Ahead
1Identify the subject area
2Consider how recent or historical your search is.
3 Do not take outdated topics
What is the research process?
It is the systematic way a researcher approaches their area of study to produce knowledge which the
community will consider to be worthwhile within the field.
There are four principles stages in the research process that we will cover here:
1 Inquiry on the chosen Topic
2 Collection of relevant Data, methodology, and processing the matters related to your questions
2. 3 Organization It truly reflects you best efforts inputs to improve the matters
4 Presentation A step which will yield the results helps in your success and progress in career
Academic Integrity
Academic Integrity means honesty and responsibility in scholarship. Intellectual contributions from
others must be consistently and responsibly acknowledged. Academic work completed in any other way
is fraudulent,
Never forget what all do will the assessed by someone who is familiar with matters,
STEPS IN RESEARCH PROCESS
Series of various actions, which are necessary for effective research work.
Suggestions for Finding a Topic
Discuss your topic ideas with a reference librarian. It may be wise to set up a research consultation. You
can request a personal research consultation using this online form
State why the problem you address is important State what is lacking in the current knowledge and
what can be your contribution for the progress of the topic you have chosen, ( Never forget this
certainly brings in credit to your work )
State the objectives of your study or the research question
Research process consists of several closely related activities. However, many formulate more numbers
/ Sections with subheadings
Various steps involved in a research process are not mutually exclusive, nor they are separate & distinct.
1 Try searching and new Ideas and research is a continuum process -The process focuses on testing
through a systematic process. In this process, the study is documented in such a way that another
individual can conduct the same study again. This is referred to as replicating the study
2 Good you have chosen a topic of interest and which will help the career of you and the Institution to
get credits documenting the study so that others can review the process
The scientific research process is a multiple-step process where the steps are interlinked with the other
steps in the process. If changes are made in one step of the process, the researcher must review all the
other steps to ensure that the changes are reflected throughout the process.
Once you have identified the area of work you have identified
Soon you must get back to Scientific and Ethical committees
Certainly, very research work finally needs ethical clearance to cause no harm to the participants and
litigations and harm caused by your work may hamper your progress
Ethics in Research
3. Protection from Harm
Confidentiality
Parental Permission
Avoiding Deception
Using All Data
Avoiding Coercion
The Seven Steps of the Research Process
STEP 1: IDENTIFY AND DEVELOP YOUR TOPIC
Step 2 FIND BACKGROUND INFORMATION
STEP 3: USE CATALOGS TO FIND BOOKS AND MEDIA
STEP 4: USE INDEXES TO FIND PERIODICAL ARTICLES
STEP 5: FIND ADDITIONAL INTERNET RESOURCES
STEP 6: EVALUATE WHAT YOU FIND
Data Analysis The analysis of data requires several closely related operations such as the establishment
of categories.
This stage mainly includes:
Coding
Editing
Tabulation
STEP 7: CITE WHAT YOU FIND USING A STANDARD FORMAT
THE QUESTIONS YOU FIND WHEN you ARE EVALUATED YOUR THEISS IN EXAMINATION
BE FAMILIAR TO ANSWER IN THE EXAMINATIONS - Introduce the topic to the examiners and State why
the problem you address is important State what is lacking in the current knowledge State the
objectives of your study or the research question Methods Describe the context and setting of the study
Specify the study design Describe the ‘population’ (patients, doctors, hospitals, etc.) Describe the
sampling strategy Describe the intervention (if applicable) Identify the main study variables Describe
data collection instruments and procedures Outline analysis methods Results Report on data collection
and recruitment (response rates, etc.) Describe participants (demographic, clinical condition, etc.)
Present key findings with respect to the central research question Present secondary findings
(secondary outcomes, subgroup analyses, etc.) Discussion State the main findings of the study Discuss
the main results with reference to previous research Discuss policy and practice implications of the
results Analyze the strengths and limitations of the study Offer perspectives for future work can
structure of a research paper
4. Give credit where credit is due; cite your sources.
Citing or documenting the sources used in your research serves two purposes, it gives proper credit to
the authors of the materials used, and it allows those who are reading your work to duplicate your
research and locate the sources that you have listed as references.
HOW LONG I WORK ON THE TOPIC IS THE RESEARCH FRUITFUL AND HELPFUL-If you are sincere to your
Job You cannot conduct complicated topics with multiple ideas, as many of us have to drop out of
many ideas and creates a confusion as the synopsis you forwarded will be entirely different when you
complete the research process, Better to choose few workable ideas using the scientific research
process when time is limited, or the study is done at the last minute?
NEVER START ANY RESEARCH WITHOUT An ADVICE OF A STATISTICIANS OR YOU STRUGGLE COOKING
THE MATERS AT THE END
FAKE RESEARCH Researchers who do studies that result in either MISINFORMATION OR false conclusions
that are not of any value to the organization and certainly to ourselves
