Do we begin with establishing rules or building climate? Treat students as human beings Recognize students’ cultural values and languages Find ways in which students can connect literature to the relevancy of their lives:  academic, cultural, emotional and social literacies Burke: Main Points
All of these are critical to classroom community. Create a warm climate Build mutual respect & community Take time to applaud work Recognize a everyone’s differences Laugh a little Make students as important as the lesson Burke Point 1Treat students as human beings, not statistics
In what ways can we use diverse genre to motivate our students to read? Build personal relationships Explore different meanings of words Include diverse texts Integrate authors of different backgrounds Burke Point 2Recognize students’ cultural values and languages
How can we incorporate the humanities into ELA to make it more relevant to students? Bring in guest speakers Write for an audience Read with your students and have them         write as they read Incorporate art and be creative Use techniques such as, poetry alive, Reader’s Theater, perspective work, and various writing activities Select quality multi-cultural literature Burke Point 3Find ways in which students can connect literature to the relevancy of their lives:
