INTRODUCTION
This slide presentation looks at cycles’ of various elements
and compounds that are important for the survival of
living organisms within their environments.
Oxygen, Carbon and Nitrogen cycles are explored in this
unit on the Terrestrial Environment, but we will also briefly
integrate the Water cycle, which is taken from the next
unit on the Aquatic Environment, but we’ll also explore it
further in that unit.
As you go through these slides, reflect on the importance
of these inter-related cycles for the survival of living
organisms and Earth.
You can access various subtopics in the Menu at the top

Question 5. Natural cycles are often referred to as
‘biogeochemical’ cycles. Explain the meaning.

Answer to 5.
bio = plants, animals and including bacteria.
geo = rocks and soils;
chemical = elements, compounds.
So, the term ‘biogeochemical’ refers to cycles that
involve the continuous cycling of chemicals through

“Oxygen (a gas) is one of the major components found
in the atmosphere of the Earth.” It makes up over twenty
percent of the Earth's atmosphere. 50% of the Earth's crust
is made up of oxygen.
You never find oxygen floating around as individual
atoms. Oxygen is always with other elements…. “ and it is
involved in many cycles.”
Oxygen cycles through Earth’s environment in several
forms. It can be dissolved in the air or in water.

Feedback: Example – apart from atmospheric oxygen = O2,
we find oxygen as O3 = ozone; in CO2 = carbon dioxide, in
H2O= water and in sugars = C6H12O6.
During respiration plants and animals use O2. It is returned to
the air and water as carbon dioxide(CO2).
Through photosynthesis, plants convert CO2 and H2O into
carbohydrates, and oxygen is released.

2 - The Oxygen Cycle
The oxygen cycle is the continuous cycling or circulation
of oxygen through the non-living environment and the
biochemical processes that go on in living animals and
plants. (It) “describes the movement of O2 within … the
atmosphere … within the biosphere and the lithosphere
(Earth's crust).
“The main driving factor of the oxygen cycle is
photosynthesis, which is responsible for the modern Earth's
atmosphere and life as we know it…” Respiration is also
involved in the cycling process. Ref.> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen_cycle

2 - The Oxygen Cycle - Why is Oxygen needed?
Oxygen is needed/used up or stored in ‘sinks’ for all kinds of
processes that occur in organic/inorganic matter, e.g:
1.Living plants and animals use oxygen for aerobic
respiration all throughout life to release the energy, stored
in food, that they require. Organisms take in/use up oxygen
(and pass out carbon dioxide).
2.The burning/combustion of fossil fuels/biomass, e.g. coal,
gas, oil, to release energy, requires/uses oxygen.
3.Processes such as the rusting/oxidation of metals uses
oxygen.
4.The decomposition by bacteria of organic matter from
dead organisms is a process that uses oxygen.

2 - The Oxygen Cycle: How is Oxygen produced?
Oxygen is produced (source)..…
1.By Plants – during the process of photosynthesis, both land
plants and phytoplankton use carbon dioxide, the energy
of sunlight, and water to create food molecules in which
energy is stored. In the process they also ‘create’ oxygen
which is released into the air through the leaf stomata.
2. By sunlight – “An additional source of atmospheric free
oxygen comes from photolysis, whereby high energy
ultraviolet radiation breaks down atmospheric water
(vapour) and nitrous oxide into component atoms. The free
H and N atoms escape into space leaving O2 in the
atmosphere.”
3.The weathering of rock also releases oxygen to the air.

Most of the nitrogen found in any terrestrial environment
came initially from the atmosphere, where it forms about
78% of the atmosphere. But, while nitrogen is crucial for
any life on Earth, most of this atmospheric nitrogen
cannot be used directly by either plants or animals.
Nitrogen gas must be converted or ‘fixed’ to other forms
to be useful for ‘higher’ plants and animals.
This happens in the nitrogen cycle.

cycling nitrogen through its various forms so that plants
and animals an can use it>

5 - Processes involved in the Nitrogen cycle
The main processes of the nitrogen cycle are:
32
Ammonification - When plants and
animals die, various bacteria and
fungi decompose these dead
organisms and also animal wastes,
into NH4OH, i.e. they cause decay.
Denitrification - anaerobic
bacteria break down
nitrates (NO3-
) into
nitrogen gas (N2)
Nitrification - bacteria change ammonium (NH4+
) into
nitrites (NO2-
) then into nitrates (NO3-
).
Nitrogen fixation - bacteria living in the root nodules of legumes,
convert nitrogen gas (N2) into organic compounds that plants can
use. The energy of lightning and also industrial processes can also
“fix” atmospheric nitrogen gas i.e. atmospheric oxygen and
nitrogen combine to form nitrate ions.

REVIEW Activity 1 - The Oxygen Cycle
Feedback to Question 2. Write a brief description of the Oxygen
cycle.
Oxygen is always present in the atmosphere/air. Some is formed
when sunlight splits atmospheric water (called photolysis) to
release oxygen. Most oxygen comes from green terrestrial plants,
and also from aquatic plants and phytoplankton that give off
oxygen during photosynthesis.
Land plants and animals absorb atmospheric oxygen and use it
during respiration, and, like land organisms, aquatic organisms also
use oxygen (dissolved in the water) for respiration
Apart from its use in respiration, oxygen is also used in processes of
oxidation e.g. rusting of metals and in fires, as well as in
decomposition of organic material when animals and plants die.
