ORGANIZATION OF LIFE

           Chapter 1 Section 3
01-05-03 1
Objectives:
 List three advantages of being
  Multicellular.
 Describe the levels of organization in
  living things.

01-05-03 2
Cells:

01-05-03 3
Cells:
• A cell is a membrane-covered
structure that contains all of the
  materials necessary for life.

01-05-03 3
Cells:
• A cell is a membrane-covered
structure that contains all of the
  materials necessary for life.
• Cells are only seen with a
  microscope.

Cells:
• A cell is a membrane-covered
structure that contains all of the
  materials necessary for life.
• Cells are only seen with a
  microscope.
• You have about 200 different kinds of
  cells in your body.(example: red
  blood cells, white blood cells,
  bacteria cells)

Tissue:
Cells Working
Together

01-05-03 4
Tissue:
Cells Working
Together
• A tissue is a group of
  cells that work together to
perform a specific job in the
  body.

01-05-03 4
Tissue:
Cells Working
Together
• A tissue is a group of
  cells that work together to
perform a specific job in the
  body.
• Blood, fat, and muscle cells
are just a few of the many cells
that make tissues in your body.
01-05-03 4
Organs:
Tissues Working Together

01-05-03 5
Organs:
Tissues Working Together
• Organ is two or
  more tissues
  working together
  to perform a
  specific job.

01-05-03 5
Organs:
Tissues Working Together
• Organ is two or
  more tissues
  working together
  to perform a
  specific job.
• Examples include:
  stomach,
  intestines, heart,
  lungs, and skin
01-05-03 5
Organ Systems:
       Organs working together

01-05-03 6
Organ Systems:
       Organs working together
                 • An organ system is a
                   group of organs
                   working together to
                   perform particular
                   jobs. (Examples:
                   digestive system,
                   nervous system,
                   respiratory system)

01-05-03 6
Organ Systems:
           A Great Combination
• The organs in an organ system
depend on each other. If any
part of the system fails, the
  whole system is affected.
  Failure of one organ system
  can affect other organ systems.

01-05-03 7
Organism:
Independent Living

01-05-03 8
Organism:
Independent Living

• An organism is anything that
can live on its own and is made
up of at least one cell.

01-05-03 8
Organism:
Independent Living

• An organism is anything that
can live on its own and is made
up of at least one cell.
• Example: Cat, Human, oak
  tree)

01-05-03 8
Types of Organisms:

01-05-03 9
Types of Organisms:

• Unicellular organism is a single
cell that is living on its own.
  (Example: Bacteria)

01-05-03 9
Types of Organisms:

• Unicellular organism is a single
cell that is living on its own.
  (Example: Bacteria)
• Multicellular organism can exist
only as a group of cells and that
can only survive when part of
  the whole organism.

01-05-03 9
Advantages of being
              Multicellular:

01-05-03 10
Advantages of being
              Multicellular:
• Larger size means that there are
  fewer predators.

01-05-03 10
Advantages of being
              Multicellular:
• Larger size means that there are
  fewer predators.
• Longer life because the individuals
life span is not limited to one cell’s
  existence.

01-05-03 10
Advantages of being
              Multicellular:
• Larger size means that there are
  fewer predators.
• Longer life because the individuals
life span is not limited to one cell’s
  existence.
• Specialization makes the organism
  more efficient.
01-05-03 10
Levels of Living Things:
• Organism- one living individual

01-05-03 11
Population

01-05-03 12
Population
• A Population is a group of
  organisms that are the same
kind and that live in the same
  area.

01-05-03 12
Community

01-05-03 13
Community
• A Community is two or more
  different populations living in
  the same area.

01-05-03 13
Ecosystem

01-05-03 14
Ecosystem
               • An Ecosystem is
                 the community
                 and all of the
                 nonliving things
                 that affect it, such
                 as water, soil,
                 rocks, light, and
                 temperature.
