4. Jay & Co’s approach to
women: “Find ‘em, friend
‘em, french ‘em, finger
‘em, film ‘em, fist ‘em,
felch ‘em, f*ck ‘em, forget
‘em.”
5. Misogyny, as defined by the Blackwell
Dictionary of Sociology,:
“is a cultural attitude of hatred for
females simply because they are female. It is a
central part of sexist prejudice and ideology
and, as such, is an important basis for the
oppression of females in male-dominated
societies. Misogyny is manifested in many
different ways from jokes to pornography to
violence to the self-contempt women may be
taught to feel toward their own bodies.”
MISOGYNY
7. • Bizarre (originally from D12): “My little sister’s birthday /
She’ll remember me / For a gift I had ten of my boys take
her virginity.”
LYRICS
• Bizarre (originally from D12): “My little sister’s birthday /
She’ll remember me / For a gift I had ten of my boys take
her virginity.”
• Eminem: “Snatch the bitch out her car through the
window, she screamin’ / I body slam her onto the
cement, until the concrete gave and created a sinkhole /
Bury this stink ho in it, then paid to have the street re-
paved.”
• Eminem (again)“I got 99 problems and the bitch ain't
one / She's all 99 of them I need a machine gun / I take
‘em all out I hope you hear this song / And go into a
cardiac arrest, have a heart attack / And just drop dead
and I'mma throw a fucking party after this”.
8. “If you can't hear what I'm trying to say
If you can't read from the same page
Maybe I'm going deaf
Maybe I'm going blind
Maybe I'm out of my mind”
FEMALE EMPOWERMENT?
PATRIARCHAL? MISOGYNISTIC?
It’s not just Hip-Hop…
9. • “I wanted to deal with the misogynist, funny lyrics in
a way where the girls were going to overpower the
men. Look at Emily Ratajkowski’s performance; it’s
very, very funny and subtly ridiculing. … It also forces
the men to feel playful and not at all like predators. I
directed the girls to look into the camera, this is very
intentional and they do it most of the time; they are
in the power position. I don’t think the video is sexist.
The lyrics are ridiculous, the guys are silly as f**k.
That said, I respect women who are watching out for
negative images in pop culture and who find the
nudity offensive, but I find [the video] meta and
playful.”

10. • We tried to do everything that was taboo.
Bestiality, drug injections, and everything that is
completely derogatory towards women. Because
all three of us are happily married with children,
we were like, "We're the perfect guys to make fun
of this."
• People say, "Hey, do you think this is degrading to
women?" I'm like, "Of course it is. What a
pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I've never
gotten to do that before. I've always respected
women." So we just wanted to turn it over on its
head and make people go, "Women and their
bodies are beautiful. Men are always gonna want
to follow them around."

GEORGE GERBNER –
CULTIVATION THEORY
• The idea that exposure to repeated
patterns of representation over
long periods of time can shape and
influence the way in which people
perceive the world around them
(i.e. cultivating particular views
and opinions)
• The idea that cultivation reinforces
mainstream values (dominant
ideologies).
13. Unlike misogyny, which means
the hatred of women. Misandry
means the hatred of the male
sex.
MISANDRY
14. Although many people feel that men
are expected to be respectful to
women at all times, the mass media
also influence the cultivate the
audience’s perceptions as they
continually exploit men to be either
the ‘abusive husband’ or ‘stupid
boyfriend’ in television programmes.
Children's programmes also explore
this by reflecting the idea of a ‘silly,
lazy dad’ or a ‘bullying older brother’.
This allows our children to be
brought up watching
television programmes which
reflect all men in a negative
way.
15. William Farrell:
'In the past quarter century, we exposed
biases against other races and called it
racism, and we exposed biases against
women and called it sexism. Biases against
men we call humour.‘
16. There are many examples of this in famous
cartoons which our children watch daily,
e.g the Simpsons.
The two male characters display signs of
misandry.
• Homer is made to look irresponsible,
lazy, rude and abusive.
• Bart is portrayed as disobedient, a bully,
dumb and stupid.
However Lisa is seen as intelligent,
obedient, sassy and at times hard done by,
by her brother. In addition, Marge is seen
as smart, loving and wife to an abusive
husband.
All of this is a clear sign to how misandry is
being exploited in the media.
‘Abusive father/husband’
‘Stupid, dumb and silly’
17. Some would even say that Frozen has misandry in it.
It’s the first Disney film which was released where it didn’t end up as
the traditional fairy tale way of falling in love. Instead it was a sisters
love who saved the day. The way that Prince Hans of the Southern
Isles was represented was an ‘evil, power craving, obnoxious’ man,
whose only intention was to kill of the sisters to have full ownership
of the land, their people and castle. While Sven was often laughed at
and ridiculed by his family. Meanwhile the women were seen as not
only the villain but the hero also. Teaching younger girls that they
don’t need a man to know that they are loved. Many people see this
as displays of misandry.
18. Create a collage (can be done in Word or Powerpoint)
of celebrities or characters who you think are
stereotypes and countertypes.
Explain how they:
1. reinforce gender stereotypes
2. challenge gender stereotypes
Try to explain the effects of the countertypes.
Use key terms if you can, such as: stereotypes,
countertypes, feminism, misogyny.
Due in next week.
