1. Chapter 9 by Brandon Miller
What is cultural competence? How can you develop it?
Well Cultural competence refers to an ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures,
particularly in the context of human resources, non-profit organizations, and government agencies
whose employees work with persons from different cultural/ethnic backgrounds or things of that
nature.
And you can develop this by following the stages such as Cultural Knowledge -> Cultural Awareness ->
Cultural Sensitivity and much more like being active.
How can you communicate effectively?
There are many ways to do this but two are
1-Set the listener at ease. You want to do this before launching into your conversation or presentation.
It can help sometimes to begin with a favorite anecdote. This helps the listener identify with you as
someone like them.
2-Be articulate. It is important to speak clearly so that the message comes across in a way that every
listener can understand. Your words are remembered because people instantly understand what it is
that you are saying. It means uttering your words distinctly, preferring simpler words over more
complex ones and speaking at a level guaranteed to be heard, but without coming across as too quiet or
disengaged.
How can you make the most of personal relationships?
Let’s be honest We are all guilty of taking things for granted. Perhaps the thing we take for granted
most of all are our personal relationships. However, very rarely do we stop to think about the processes
involved in forming personal relationships. The reason why we should, is because personal relationships
are at the heart of our happiness and future success.
think quickly about the way you approach others. In all areas of relationship – personal or otherwise if
you make your intention when speaking to others appear to be a desire to connect with them - rather
than to get something out of them – then you will have far more success in forming a partnership with
them. This is because you will have set that person at ease and made them feel that you have taken an
2. interest in their personal development. It sounds simple but this is a mistake that many people make
when it comes to forming relationships.
