This order consist of 22 species
Alligators – 7 species
Crocodiles – 14 species
Gharials – 1 specie

3. Crocodilians
Crocodiles are more
advanced than other
reptiles in 2 ways:
1. 4 chamber heart
2. Brain has a true
cerebral cortex
– Allows for learning and
not instinctive.

4. Characteristics
Massive, elongated head armed with
many teeth
Short sturdy legs
Long strong tail
Webbed hind feet.

6. Crocodilians
Crocodiles are mostly
found in tropical and
subtropical areas.
American and
Chinese alligators can
be found in areas with
winter temperatures.

7. Gharials
Gharials have a long slender snout.
This snout is designed to catch fish (like a
dolphin or gar)
Gharials also have weak legs and rarely
move away from the water.

8. Crocodilians
Difference between Crocs and Gators:
Alligators have a broad, rounder snout
than crocodiles and their 4th tooth on either
side is enlarged and hidden when mouth
closed.
Crocodiles snouts taper and the 4th tooth
can be seen when the mouth is closed.

All crocodilians are carnivores
They are mostly ambush predators
Adults will eat anything they can pull
down.
Babies eat insects, amphibians, fish, or
crustaceans

Crocodiles have incredible jaw strength
when closing.
Their muscles for opening their jaw are
weak.
Death Roll – is when they crocodiles rolls
to tear off a piece of meat.

Alligators – 18 feet
Gharial – 21.5 feet
Crocodiles – 24.5 feet
– 14 foot with girth of 7
feet and weigh 2 tons.
