The appearance and colour of surfacings used for the various types of traffic – public transport,
automobile, bicycle and pedestrian - highlight and differentiate the areas set aside for their respective
users. In addition to being decorative, these surfacings therefore play a crucial safety role.
Eurovia has devised a way to use innovative materials in asphalt mixes to create a whole new range of
attractive and unusual surfaces: Agrevia®.

ll the COLoURS ARE
FOUND IN NATURE
Agrevia® is a surfacing process that uses a hot
asphaltic concrete and applies a special mechanical
surface treatment to it to make the most of the
aesthetic qualities of its aggregates.
The origin, colour, shape and grading of the
aggregates and the type of mix are selected
according to the use to which the surfacing is to be
put and the preference of the customer.
Aggregates occur naturally in a wide range of
colours ranging from black to white, pink and green.
Eurovia uses this variety to give durable, informative
and aesthetic colour to the road and its immediate
surroundings.
Agrevia® can thus be used to create surfaces of
diverse appearance, texture and colour.
The thickness applied is determined by the
aggregate formulation and the loadings to which the
pavement will be subjected.

ESTHeTIc and
demarcation
performance
Agrevia® combines a natural appearance derived
from its constituent materials with the recognised
qualities of asphalt mixes. It is flexible and joint-free
for driving comfort and safety.
Agrevia® can be used to enhance the differentiation
and demarcation of road uses to improve the safety
of a wide variety of structures such as:
idewalks,
s
icycle paths,
b
edicated lanes,
d
houlders,
s
mergency stopping lanes,
e
oundabouts,
r
edestrian crosswalks,
p
irectional islands.
d
Agrevia® can be specially formulated to give it a
natural appearance, making it suitable for use in
gardens and parks and in the vicinity of landmarks
and historic sites. Agrevia® formulated with white
or light-coloured aggregates is highly appreciated
in special applications such as tunnels and
underpasses, where it reduces the need for lighting
and improves visibility and thereby safety.
The properties of Agrevia® , unlike those of filmbased colouring processes, are not altered by
traffic and have outstanding durability.

Aggregates
Aggregates are selected according to the usual
criteria pertaining to intrinsic characteristics and
use (French XP P 18-545 standard) and also above
all according to their colour and grading.
Materials of different origins and different colours
are often mixed to give the surfacing an attractive
marbled appearance. Sand and gravel can be used
in the formulation to achieve a special surface
appearance in pedestrian applications, as in the
Antikvia® mix initially developed by Eurovia in
Germany.
Binder
The Agrevia® binder is generally a pure bitumen of
grade 50/70 or lower.
SIMPLE application
Agrevia® is laid by means of the usual mechanical or
manual methods used to apply bituminous mixes.
Mechanical treatment is applied to the mix surface
prior to trafficking in order to uniformly bring out
the nature and original colour of the aggregates
used. This operation is also applied, as appropriate,
to improve the macrotexture or microtexture of
the surfacing and thus enhance skid resistance and
safety.
The operation is performed mechanically by
grit-blasting, hydrostripping or sanding. Given the
nature of the surface treated and the objective of
the treatment, this operation must be carried out by
highly specialised crews using special equipment.
Agrevia®, Antikvia®, and Salviacim® are Eurovia
registered trademarks.

Formulation
The Agrevia® grading curve can be either dense or
gap graded. The most widely used gradings are 0/10
and 0/14 mm but 0/16 and even 0/20 gradings are
occasionally employed (Antikvia®).
If the surfacing may be subject to severe
mechanical loadings – channelled traffic, heavy
equipment parking, shear stress, etc. – a percolated
mix may be used. The surfacing then offers the
exceptional performance of Salviacim® industrial
surfacing.
