The Constitutional Convention was held from May to September 1787 in Philadelphia to address weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation and make compromises between large and small states and northern and southern states. 55 delegates from 12 states attended, including George Washington, James Madison, and Benjamin Franklin. James Madison kept detailed notes and is considered the Father of the Constitution since he brought the Virginia Plan which became the basis for the final document after significant changes.
