DIGITAL LIBRARY

 Digital library is a cultural infrastructure that
collects and stores information in electronic
format and supports its users in accessing a
  large collection of information effectively
  through digital means
DIGITIZATION
 Digitization of information basically means the
process of converting paper documents such as text,
graphics etc. into digital image, which can be make
accessible through electronic network. We can say
digitization means process which is meant to
eliminate paperwork and make a transition to a
paperless environment with the help of software
  technology.
CHARACTERISTICS OF
DIGITAL LIBRARIES
 User-friendly interface.
 Advanced searching and retrieval.
 Supporting multimedia content.
 Availability for long time.
 Network Accessibility
CHARACTERSTICS ……
 Accessibility from anywhere, home, school,
  libraries, during travel etc.
 Providing access to very large collections
including access to primary and secondary
  information.
 Greater opportunity for publishing etc.
BENEFITS OF DIGITAL
LIBRARIES
  24 hour accessibility of
   information
  Multi-user Accessibility
  Storage of information is
cheaper in digital form than in
   printed form
  Information sharing
BENEFITS ……

   Quick transmission of information
   Information is readily available
   Enhanced searching techniques
   Quick retrieval
FUNCTIONS…….

 To enable greater access to
  information.
 To provide means to enrich the
  teaching and learning environment
 To protect owners of information
PROCESS OF COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT

 Identification and selection of digital objects :- keeping in
view of the objectives of the library, the digital material is
  identified and selected.

 Scanning :- the selected objects may be of two types- born
digitally or to be converted in digital form. If the material is print
form, the same is converted in digital format by using scanners
  and related software.

 Storage:- the digital objects are stored on a suitable device.

 Retrieval:- the stored material is retrieved as and when required.
Hardware

 Compute P IV with high capacity hard disk for server and
clients in the LAN, Web servers and FTP Servers
  Workstation PCs
  Capture devices- scanners, cameras
 High power UPS (5-20 KVS)
 Output devices like- Printers, CD-ROM, DVD, OCR
 High speed LAN, WAN, Internet connectivity
Software
 Operating System
 OCR software
 Scanning Software
 Acrobat Reader
 CD-Read/Write software
 Digital Library Software
 Networking software, SQL server software
 Web Designing software like Java, front page, XML etc.
 RDBMS supporting the variety of digital databases like Oracle,
  MYSQL etc.
 Full text search engine to index and provide access to digital
  resources.
LSDigital: Introduction

LSDigital is an “Add-on” item to LibSys software and
thus is fully compatible with LibSys. The entire
process is fully automated thereby requiring
minimum effort by the user and integration with
LibSys database is implicit. It provides great
benefits to the users who would be able to search
both digitized and non-digitized library collection
   through a common library OPAC.
LSDigital
 LSDigital of LibSys is a complete solution for
managing digital resources. It is used for creating
digital resources using any twain compliant scanner.
There is option to import any pre-scanned images
of the required resources. The digital resource
created by this system preserves the visual layout of
the document while providing full text search in the
various sections of the resource. This is made
possible by converting pages corresponding to each
element of the digital resources into a corresponding
   ‘PDF’ text file
LSDigital supports the following functions:-

   Resource Structure Definition
   Scanning
   Versions maintenance
   PDF conversion
   Resource Database maintenance
   Searching and retrievals
Steps in collection building using

CONCLUSION

 In the present era, information is being generated in variety
of ways on various format from various sources. To meet out
the situation posed on the library, the selection, scanning,
storage and retrieval of digital information have become the
necessity. All libraries may have to build their digital
libraries else have to acquire the capability to access other
digital libraries or information on Internet for all their users.
Many libraries are using various open source software like
Greenstone, Fedora, DSpace, E-Prints etc. and Commercial
software like LSDigital have appeared for building the
  digital library.
CONCLUSION

 There is option to import any pre-scanned images of
the required resources. The digital resource created
by this system preserves the visual layout of the
document while providing full text search in the
   various sections of the resource.
 The entire process is fully automated thereby
requiring minimum effort by the user and
integration with LibSys database is implicit. The
financial sound libraries using LibSys software for
its housekeeping operations may use the LSDigital
   software for building digital library.

  • 2. DIGITAL LIBRARY  Digital library is a cultural infrastructure that collects and stores information in electronic format and supports its users in accessing a large collection of information effectively through digital means
  • 3. DIGITIZATION  Digitization of information basically means the process of converting paper documents such as text, graphics etc. into digital image, which can be make accessible through electronic network. We can say digitization means process which is meant to eliminate paperwork and make a transition to a paperless environment with the help of software technology.
  • 4. CHARACTERISTICS OF DIGITAL LIBRARIES  User-friendly interface.  Advanced searching and retrieval.  Supporting multimedia content.  Availability for long time.  Network Accessibility
  • 5. CHARACTERSTICS ……  Accessibility from anywhere, home, school, libraries, during travel etc.  Providing access to very large collections including access to primary and secondary information.  Greater opportunity for publishing etc.
  • 6. BENEFITS OF DIGITAL LIBRARIES  24 hour accessibility of information  Multi-user Accessibility  Storage of information is cheaper in digital form than in printed form  Information sharing
  • 7. BENEFITS ……  Quick transmission of information  Information is readily available  Enhanced searching techniques  Quick retrieval
  • 8. FUNCTIONS…….  To enable greater access to information.  To provide means to enrich the teaching and learning environment  To protect owners of information
  • 9. PROCESS OF COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT  Identification and selection of digital objects :- keeping in view of the objectives of the library, the digital material is identified and selected.  Scanning :- the selected objects may be of two types- born digitally or to be converted in digital form. If the material is print form, the same is converted in digital format by using scanners and related software.  Storage:- the digital objects are stored on a suitable device.  Retrieval:- the stored material is retrieved as and when required.
  • 10. Hardware  Compute P IV with high capacity hard disk for server and clients in the LAN, Web servers and FTP Servers  Workstation PCs  Capture devices- scanners, cameras  High power UPS (5-20 KVS)  Output devices like- Printers, CD-ROM, DVD, OCR  High speed LAN, WAN, Internet connectivity
  • 11. Software  Operating System  OCR software  Scanning Software  Acrobat Reader  CD-Read/Write software  Digital Library Software  Networking software, SQL server software  Web Designing software like Java, front page, XML etc.  RDBMS supporting the variety of digital databases like Oracle, MYSQL etc.  Full text search engine to index and provide access to digital resources.
  • 12. LSDigital: Introduction LSDigital is an “Add-on” item to LibSys software and thus is fully compatible with LibSys. The entire process is fully automated thereby requiring minimum effort by the user and integration with LibSys database is implicit. It provides great benefits to the users who would be able to search both digitized and non-digitized library collection through a common library OPAC.
  • 13. LSDigital  LSDigital of LibSys is a complete solution for managing digital resources. It is used for creating digital resources using any twain compliant scanner. There is option to import any pre-scanned images of the required resources. The digital resource created by this system preserves the visual layout of the document while providing full text search in the various sections of the resource. This is made possible by converting pages corresponding to each element of the digital resources into a corresponding ‘PDF’ text file
  • 14. LSDigital supports the following functions:-  Resource Structure Definition  Scanning  Versions maintenance  PDF conversion  Resource Database maintenance  Searching and retrievals
  • 15. Steps in collection building using LSDigital The steps involved in collection building using LSDigital are discussed in the coming slides.

  • 45. CONCLUSION  In the present era, information is being generated in variety of ways on various format from various sources. To meet out the situation posed on the library, the selection, scanning, storage and retrieval of digital information have become the necessity. All libraries may have to build their digital libraries else have to acquire the capability to access other digital libraries or information on Internet for all their users. Many libraries are using various open source software like Greenstone, Fedora, DSpace, E-Prints etc. and Commercial software like LSDigital have appeared for building the digital library.
  • 46. CONCLUSION  There is option to import any pre-scanned images of the required resources. The digital resource created by this system preserves the visual layout of the document while providing full text search in the various sections of the resource.  The entire process is fully automated thereby requiring minimum effort by the user and integration with LibSys database is implicit. The financial sound libraries using LibSys software for its housekeeping operations may use the LSDigital software for building digital library.
