Integrating Models of Undergraduate Education: The University of Southern California’s Multimedia in the Core Program Holly Willis, Associate Director
How do you introduce multimedia literacy in a university-wide program, both practically – in terms of building labs, instituting classes and hiring people to teach those classes – and theoretically, in terms of rethinking the parameters of traditional literacy?

African-American Popular Culture Students made sonic arguments
The Baths of Caracalla This project offers a 3-D reconstruction of an ancient Roman ruin and was created by student Linda Ann Nolan for Religion 494, Near Eastern and Mediterranean Archeology, taught by Lynn Swartz Dodd.
Obasan and History For a class titled Asian American Literature, taught by Professor Viet Nguyen, one student chronicled the internment and relocation of Japanese citizens in Canada during World War II.

Multimedia documentary essay on Patrice Lumumba Ford
Students created an interactive quiz based on the theories of nine thinkers, including Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim.
Student-created wiki for Re-Viewing Religion in Asian America.

From the New Media Consortium: Multimedia literacy is the set of abilities and skills where aural, visual and digital literacy overlap. It involves: – the ability to understand the power of images and sounds, – to recognize and use that power, – to manipulate and transform digital media, – to distribute that media pervasively, –  and to easily adapt to new forms.
