And we felt, what better way to demonstrate Core Team Values than taking you back in time, to the decks of the very ships that Scott and Shackleton commanded, and to listen in on the conversations as they unfolded…Thus, I introduce to you: Scott and ShackletonNarrator walks through, introducing each major point, letting Scott and Shackleton battle out the points in turn, and then summarizing before moving onto the next point
Point 1: Archaic HierarchScott: I happily put my team to work scraping freezing water off the deck, while I lounge about in a generally warm cabin.Macklin:But, my fingers are turning black…Shackleton: Unlike Scott on Endurance, everyone pitched in - regardless of station. Scott:Well, no man of my stature would be caught dead scrubbing the deck, in the Royal Naval Academy…Shackleton: Even Macklin, the surgeon, helps scrub the deck. Scott: Men, stand at attention until I say! Mind not Frostbite of the toes, for you are merely grunts of the Royal Naval Academy.Shackleton: What outrageously outdated rules! I won't have any of it, nor will any of my crew!
Point 2: Caring for PeopleScott: I demand at least 4 or 5 reindeer-skin sleeping bags in my cabin, at all times, and they are to be cleaned daily by shipmate Brighton. Our captain must not be compromised.Brighton: You're soooo needy…Shackleton: We randomly select, via lottery, who gets the reindeer-skin bags. And as for me, Iwithdraw my name from the lottery.Scott: *Harrumph* Now, it is Royal Naval Academy doctrine that the captain (read: ME) has a full plate, and full belly, at all times!Shackleton: Fantastic - horde your food, while your men grow weak! No thanks, we will divide the food equally and distribute it fairly.Scott: There must be least four or five bottles of Royal Naval Brandy at my disposal, at all times, in order to lead this ragtag crew.Shackleton:My men will share in the resources we have, and ensure that no man is left wanting.
Point 3: TEAM UNITYScott: Fah! I've had enough of these squabbling underlings and their milk. Milk is for babies. Real men, CAPTAINS drink brandy!Shackleton: My men always come first and, if need be, I will hand deliver hot milk to each tent. Scott: Nonsense,I demand respect. I don't care if you louts argue, steal each other's milk - just do it away from me…Shackleton: I have seen that a little thanks will go a long way – our crew insists on keeping common courtesy about us at all times. (hand milk to Pavlos)Scott: I absolutely will not get my hands dirty like the rest of these… "people".Shackleton: In my opinion, there is nothing more vital than self-sacrifice.
