Introduction

The Energy sector in India is undergoing unprecedented investment and growth. The
private sector has become an integral part of this hitherto public sector dominated industry.
The Power sector has become one of the preferred destinations for investors, with several
multi-billion dollar IPOs in 2009. Dozens of companies have announced projects worth
billions of dollars. Along with the large investments in conventional energy sources,
emerging areas like alternative energy, energy efficiency, environmental management and
smart technologies needed for sustainable development have become key considerations
for corporate management and policy makers.

To tackle these challenges and realize the growth promised by these investments, there
is need for tens of thousands of highly competent managers. However, there has not
been a commensurate investment in developing human resources and management talent
to deliver on these growth plans. Further, there is an urgent need to engage even the
existing managers from the sector with the different facets of sustainable development.

The Institute of Energy Management and Research (IEMR) is an initiative by professionals with
exceptional track records in the Energy industry and human resource development, and is
supported by a number of Corporate Partners. The Institute’s activities include full time post
graduate management programs, corporate training programs, consulting services and
independent research to enhance the intellectual capital and knowledge base in the sector. The
Post Graduate Programs seek to develop motivated management professionals equipped with

IEMR is led by Dr. B.S.K. Naidu, one of the most accomplished leaders in capacity building in the
Indian Energy sector. His successful stewardship of key national apex training institutions
contributed immensely to talent development for this growing sector. He served as the Director
General of the National Power Training Institute, Central Power Research Institute and Reliance
Energy Management Institute. IEMR has the guidance and support of a distinguished advisory
board comprising key decision makers from the Industry and highly experienced members of
academia. The board is led by Mr. R.V. Shahi, former Power Secretary, Government of India. He
was a key architect of the power sector reforms in India and brings rich perspectives from his
roles in the corporate world and in policy-making.

                      Dr. Naidu served as the Director General of the National Power Training Institute (NPTI), Central Power
                      Research Institute (CPRI) and Reliance Energy Management Institute (REMI). His Leadership at NPTI
                      has been made the subject of a case study on “Transformational Leadership” for MBA students and
                      he himself has been one of the models of study on Human Excellence at IIM, Ahmedabad. Dr. Naidu
                      was a key architect of the National Perspective Plan for R&D and the National Training Policy for Power
                      Sector. He has a double Doctorate in Engineering and Management, is a Fellow of Indian National
                      Academy of Engineering and has authored over 140 publications including 15 books. He has won 13
                      individual awards (national and international) besides representing India at many International forums
                      including a lead speech at the UN General Assembly.

  • 2. Introduction The Energy sector in India is undergoing unprecedented investment and growth. The private sector has become an integral part of this hitherto public sector dominated industry. The Power sector has become one of the preferred destinations for investors, with several multi-billion dollar IPOs in 2009. Dozens of companies have announced projects worth billions of dollars. Along with the large investments in conventional energy sources, emerging areas like alternative energy, energy efficiency, environmental management and smart technologies needed for sustainable development have become key considerations for corporate management and policy makers. To tackle these challenges and realize the growth promised by these investments, there is need for tens of thousands of highly competent managers. However, there has not been a commensurate investment in developing human resources and management talent to deliver on these growth plans. Further, there is an urgent need to engage even the existing managers from the sector with the different facets of sustainable development. INSTITUTE OF ENE RGY MANAGE ME NT AND RESEARCH INS ITUTE ENE MAN AN RES The Institute of Energy Management and Research (IEMR) is an initiative by professionals with exceptional track records in the Energy industry and human resource development, and is supported by a number of Corporate Partners. The Institute’s activities include full time post graduate management programs, corporate training programs, consulting services and independent research to enhance the intellectual capital and knowledge base in the sector. The Post Graduate Programs seek to develop motivated management professionals equipped with comprehensive domain knowledge and capable of being productive from their first day of engagement with the corporate world. IEMR is led by Dr. B.S.K. Naidu, one of the most accomplished leaders in capacity building in the Indian Energy sector. His successful stewardship of key national apex training institutions contributed immensely to talent development for this growing sector. He served as the Director General of the National Power Training Institute, Central Power Research Institute and Reliance Energy Management Institute. IEMR has the guidance and support of a distinguished advisory board comprising key decision makers from the Industry and highly experienced members of academia. The board is led by Mr. R.V. Shahi, former Power Secretary, Government of India. He was a key architect of the power sector reforms in India and brings rich perspectives from his roles in the corporate world and in policy-making.

Naidu, Chairman, IEMR Dr. Naidu served as the Director General of the National Power Training Institute (NPTI), Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) and Reliance Energy Management Institute (REMI). His Leadership at NPTI has been made the subject of a case study on “Transformational Leadership” for MBA students and he himself has been one of the models of study on Human Excellence at IIM, Ahmedabad. Dr. Naidu was a key architect of the National Perspective Plan for R&D and the National Training Policy for Power Sector. He has a double Doctorate in Engineering and Management, is a Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering and has authored over 140 publications including 15 books. He has won 13 individual awards (national and international) besides representing India at many International forums including a lead speech at the UN General Assembly.
