The League for Programming Freedom is an organization that opposes software patents and user interface copyrights. The general aim of the League for Programming Freedom is to prevent monopolies on software development. Initially the League's only specific position was against interface copyright. But once the League began to operate, members called its attention to the problem of software patents. In December 1990, the League members voted to adopt a position opposing software patents. The League's main activity was to publicize the danger of interface copyrights and software patents. The League carried out a second protest at Lotus Development Corporation in 1990, as well as dozens of speeches to inform the software community. Its position papers were printed in Dr. Dobbs' Journal and the Communications of the ACM. The League has testified at Patent Office hearings on software patents and filed friend-of-the-court briefs on behalf of defendants in interface copyright and software patent cases.

As represented by “Smartphone Patent Wars,” patents for smartphones became the most important strategic competition tool among market leaders. Especially, patents for mobile communication standards, which are the so-called ‘Standard Essential Patents (SEPs),’ became the center of legal and policy debates regarding their intellectual property rights (IPRs). The author provides the implications of recent courts’ resolutions regarding FRAND (Fair, Reasonable And Non Discriminatory) disputes to the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) industry and provide several alternative options for resolving FRAND disputes. The author contends that the current concerted resolutions in courts and regulation agencies can results in adverse effects to the ICT industry. The author also contends the main drawback of the recent proposals to resolve the disputes surrounding SEPs through the ex ante FRAND licensing and the ICT industry players’ voluntary collaboration. From the analysis of ICT industry players’ response to the outcomes of court resolutions, the author contends a compromising way to provide FRAND Royalty adopting arguments from both sides of the disputes. The author also contends a practical improvement to the voluntary collaboration proposals to resolve the disputes surrounding SEPs.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
