A Digipak is type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal
plastic holder for one or more discs. We will be including all of these conventions in our own
digipak, but in the inside add further information on the album.

6. DOMINO(ARCTIC MONKEYS RECORD LABEL)
• Domino is a well established distribution company, which tend to focus on distributing indie bands
music and albums. They are also an independent company based in London.
• The digipak is quite interesting and I feel it brings in the audience with its strange colours, plus it has
the information of the production company, a picture of the artists and the track list involved. The
band had already been established at that point as they had released albums before this, so that also
helps as it shows the band in its new album and how they have changed. I think this digipak aims its
audience because it is unique, people who listen to indie music such as Arctic Monkeys don’t want
them to turn into a pop star band, so because this is the second album, it shows that they are staying
to their first album and having obscure covers.
• From Domino itself the price of each album is £10.99 which is a reasonable price for an album, as if it
were too high people would be reluctant to buy it but if too low people would think it isn’t selling
properly for some reason and may cause less appeal for the album.
• You know it is an indie band as the colours are darker and not so outstanding than that of a pop
band. The camera work does not fully show each of their faces as it appears to be worn on purpose
and they are all looking down.
• Personally I like this digipak cover as it is different to usual ones, a typical digipak would be of a band
posing, whereas this is not and I feel it breaks the typical cover.
7. SONY MUSIC(MICHAEL JACKSONS RECORD
COMPANY) AND DIGIPAK
• This is a large conglomerate that has many artists and record labels behind them, this enables them to have a large
amount of money at their disposal. They own the labels for a huge range of world wide artists like Elvis Presley and
AC/DC. Michael Jackson’s songs have been distributed through digital technology because of the evolution of the
internet. He is available to be listened to through Vevo, Spotify, Itunes and YouTube.
• There is merchandise on sale from albums he released during his lifetime, they all very in price from £10 to £30,
this is a large price range which is normal as it was made by a large conglomerate, independent companies will
usually charge less like the Domino records.
• I think the digipak appeals to the target audience as in his time Michael Jackson was known for being the ‘King of
pop’ which would imply that he will have lots of high key colours which will stand out to the audience. The font of
the text all stay the same but the actual font itself is very generic with pop music, therefore we can see that he did
not challenge conventions as it is what the audience prefer. We can only see the outline of the artist and not
actually his face, this leads to the impression that they are mysterious, however we know that it is the artist as the
costume outline, we can see his famous hat that everyone knows. In addition, the position of the character is in the
state of the iconic dance moves that many people know, this adds star appeal as it is likely that everyone will be
able to recognise the artist from his body language and costume. The camera framing and angles are important to
how the artist is represented, on the front cover we can see that he is the only thing in sight and he is dead centre
of the frame which reflects his influence and appearance to others.
• I like that the digipak does not include the artists face on the front cover however, we would know automatically
who it is, this is because of the costume and the body language that everyone knows from him. I think this digipak
reflects the artists very well and is satisfactory for the target audience, this is because of the font style which
reflects pop well and goes with the colours and effects used. This has helped me with my research as it has showed
me what my target audience want and what digipaks should look like when the genre is 80’s, Michael Jackson was
the most iconic artist in the 80’s so it has helped me discover his style.
