Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat a number
of bacterial infections. This includes bone and joint infections,
intra abdominal infections, certain type of infectious
diarrhoea, respiratory tract infections, skin infections, typhoid
fever and urinary tract infections, alone or in combination with
other antibiotics.
It can be taken by mouth or used intravenously .
Ciprofloxacin belongs to fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics.
It is considered as second generation of this category.
4. History of Ciprofloxacin
Ciprofloxacin was the first fluoroquinolone to
be on the market. It was discovered in 1983 by
Bayer . In 1987 ciprofloxacin was approved by
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in United
States as the first oral broad- spectrum antibiotic
of this class.
The oral tablet form of ciprofloxacin was
approved in 1987.
An intravenous formulation followed in 1991.
