• 1. develop a comprehensive definition of counseling as
an applied social science;
• 2. describe the context involved in counseling;
• 3. identify the principles of counseling;
• 4. clarify how different factors contribute to successful
counseling based on the concepts and principles of
counseling;
• 5. determine life situations that are within the goals and
scope of professional counseling;
• 6. demonstrate how core values of counseling can be
infused in counseling sessions.
How do you define counseling?
Definition of Counseling:
- the process of guiding a person during a
stage of life when reassessments or
decisions have to be made about himself or
herself and his or her life course.
Counseling is not the same thing as giving
advice (making recommendations)
Counseling helps clients to make their own
decisions.
Discussion Point:
How is counseling different to
interviewing?
Interviewing is: collecting information
for a specific use as opposed to
counseling which involves assisting
clients to understand their emotions and
reactions to a situation.
Discipline of counseling:
* application of psychological theories
* and recognized set of communication skills
* appropriate to the client
Clients - person/s in a demoralized, distressed , or in a
negative state of mind
Counseling methods: face-to-face dialog, group
work, telephone, email, or other written materials.
• Goals of Counseling:
- Empowering a client
- Emancipation from a felt problem
- Client to attain insight and
understanding of oneself
- Client to develop skills and abilities
that require self-management
