3. Social Studies Unit 1 : People of the Past: How They Still Affect Us Today Summary: My students will be taking place in a unit based on people of the past and world they lived in. They will come to understand that these people affect our everyday lives in many ways. They will learn about the pioneers and the different tools they used and how these tools have evolved. They will use critical thinking and creativity to design a "tool of the future." They will present these tools to their classmates at the end of the project. Students will also learn about past figures who overcame obstacles and hardships to reach their goals.

Standard #2: Social Studies (2004) Grade 2: 2) Identify past and present contributions of a variety of individuals who have overcome difficulties or obstacles to achieve goals. Unit Objectives Objective #1: The student will be able to design an imaginary future tool used by society after learning about the tools used by the pioneers. Objective #2: The student will be able to perform a short skit in groups about a past individual of their choice who has overcome obstacles to achieve goals.
