Suggested Syllabus for 4 Credit Hour Math Literacy course using Math Lit
Goal: Preparation for statistics or liberal arts math
Cycle 1: 1.1 – 1.9, 1.11 – 1.17, 1.20, 1.21, 1.23, Cycle wrap-up
Cycle 2: 2.1 – 2.7, 2.9 – 2.14, 2.17, 2.20, Cycle wrap-up
Cycle 3: 3.1 – 3.3, 3.5, 3.6, 3.9 – 3.12, 3.18, Cycle wrap-up
Cycle 4: 4.1 – 4.6, 4.8, 4.9, 4.17, Cycle wrap-up
Notes:
1. A 4-credit course is around 3000 total minutes of class time. The suggested syllabus is under this time total to
accommodate for 3 hours of class time during the semester for in-class quizzes or discussing homework
problems. We have also accommodated for 4 tests at an hour each. These are just rough estimates of what
time may need to be allotted for those assessment-related activities.
If there is a lesson that is not included but you would like to add it, please look through list of recommended
lessons to see if there any that can be omitted in its place. Or look at the included lessons to see if parts of a
lesson (like an Explore or Connect) can be assigned to be done outside of class. This is a way to include a lot of
sections and therefore content, but shrink the time in class.
2. The content in the syllabus addresses nearly all skills in a beginning algebra class. Time is distributed between
quantitative and statistical ideas as well as algebraic ones. Linear and exponential change are developed. Some
statistics and geometric ideas are explored. The prerequisite is prealgebra or a basic math course.
We omitted lessons that dealt with the following areas:
• Distance formula
• Direct and inverse variation
• Radical and rational functions
• Solving systems with substitution
• Quadratics
• Non-linear functions and equations
• z-scores and residuals
• Order of magnitude
3. Most lessons in Cycle 1 are included since they establish the course, its approach, and some key techniques.
4. The second and third focus problem lessons in each cycle should be done outside of class to save class time.
These include 1.10, 1.18, 2.8, 2.16, 3.8, 3.14, 4.7, and 4.13. Cycle wrap-ups (test reviews) have been each cut to
15 minutes to discuss the test and how to study but not do any problems in class.
5. Adjust homework, quizzes, recaps, and wrap-ups in MML and the book accordingly due to topics being removed.
6. If there is a particular algebra topic, like factoring, that your school needs in the course, there are options to
address it. Here are some possibilities:
a. Remove a lesson or lessons listed in the syllabus above to accommodate time for it.
b. Add the topic in MyMathLab to be completed outside of class.
c. Add the topic to your intermediate algebra course.
7. Students will receive adequate algebraic skills in this course to move successfully into most intermediate algebra
classes.

statistics or liberal arts math
Cycle 1: 1.1 – 1.9, 1.11 – 1.17, 1.20, 1.21, 1.23, Cycle wrap-up
Cycle 2: 2.12 – 2.15, 2.17 – 2.19, Cycle wrap-up
Cycle 3: 3.1 – 3.3, 3.5, 3.7, 3.10 – 3.13, 3.15, 3.16, 3.18, Cycle wrap-up
Cycle 4: 4.1 – 4.3, 4.5, 4.6, 4.8 – 4.12, 4.14, 4.16, 4.17, Cycle wrap-up

function groups from intermediate algebra (quadratic, rational, radical, exponential) but with a modeling focus.

3. Most lessons in Cycle 1 are included since they establish the course, its approach, and some key techniques.
Although some of the mathematical ideas are at the beginning algebra level in this cycle, the approaches and
terminology will be new to students.
Mathematical topics that are at the beginning algebra level in cycle 1 can be reviewed or covered quickly if
students are very comfortable with the skill being developed.
4. The second and third focus problem lessons in each cycle should be done outside of class to save class time.
These include 1.10, 1.18, 3.8, 3.14, 4.7, and 4.13. Cycle 2’s focus problem should be omitted entirely.
Cycle wrap-ups (test reviews) have been each cut to 15 minutes to discuss the test and how to study but not do
any problems in class.
5. Adjust homework, quizzes, recaps, and wrap-ups in MML and the book accordingly due to topics being removed.

Math Lit 4 Credit Hour Syllabi Options

  • 1. Suggested Syllabus for 4 Credit Hour Math Literacy course using Math Lit Goal: Preparation for statistics or liberal arts math Cycle 1: 1.1 – 1.9, 1.11 – 1.17, 1.20, 1.21, 1.23, Cycle wrap-up Cycle 2: 2.1 – 2.7, 2.9 – 2.14, 2.17, 2.20, Cycle wrap-up Cycle 3: 3.1 – 3.3, 3.5, 3.6, 3.9 – 3.12, 3.18, Cycle wrap-up Cycle 4: 4.1 – 4.6, 4.8, 4.9, 4.17, Cycle wrap-up Notes: 1. A 4-credit course is around 3000 total minutes of class time. The suggested syllabus is under this time total to accommodate for 3 hours of class time during the semester for in-class quizzes or discussing homework problems. We have also accommodated for 4 tests at an hour each. These are just rough estimates of what time may need to be allotted for those assessment-related activities. If there is a lesson that is not included but you would like to add it, please look through list of recommended lessons to see if there any that can be omitted in its place. Or look at the included lessons to see if parts of a lesson (like an Explore or Connect) can be assigned to be done outside of class. This is a way to include a lot of sections and therefore content, but shrink the time in class. 2. The content in the syllabus addresses nearly all skills in a beginning algebra class. Time is distributed between quantitative and statistical ideas as well as algebraic ones. Linear and exponential change are developed. Some statistics and geometric ideas are explored. The prerequisite is prealgebra or a basic math course. We omitted lessons that dealt with the following areas: • Distance formula • Direct and inverse variation • Radical and rational functions • Solving systems with substitution • Quadratics • Non-linear functions and equations • z-scores and residuals • Order of magnitude 3. Most lessons in Cycle 1 are included since they establish the course, its approach, and some key techniques. 4. The second and third focus problem lessons in each cycle should be done outside of class to save class time. These include 1.10, 1.18, 2.8, 2.16, 3.8, 3.14, 4.7, and 4.13. Cycle wrap-ups (test reviews) have been each cut to 15 minutes to discuss the test and how to study but not do any problems in class. 5. Adjust homework, quizzes, recaps, and wrap-ups in MML and the book accordingly due to topics being removed. 6. If there is a particular algebra topic, like factoring, that your school needs in the course, there are options to address it. Here are some possibilities: a. Remove a lesson or lessons listed in the syllabus above to accommodate time for it. b. Add the topic in MyMathLab to be completed outside of class. c. Add the topic to your intermediate algebra course. 7. Students will receive adequate algebraic skills in this course to move successfully into most intermediate algebra classes. 8. Mathematical topics that are at the beginning algebra level in cycle 1 can be reviewed or covered quickly if students are very comfortable with the skill being developed. 4. The second and third focus problem lessons in each cycle should be done outside of class to save class time. These include 1.10, 1.18, 3.8, 3.14, 4.7, and 4.13. Cycle 2’s focus problem should be omitted entirely. Cycle wrap-ups (test reviews) have been each cut to 15 minutes to discuss the test and how to study but not do any problems in class. 5.
