2. Living and Non-living things
•Living things have certain characteristics that
differentiates them from non-living things aka-
The Seven Life Processes Mnemonic for which is-
MRS. GREN or MRS. NERG.
3. M
•M stands for Movement.
•All living things move.
•We, humans do, so do plants animals, bacteria
and other lively creatures.
•They do it to find food, shelter and to avoid
enemies.
4. While the prey runs to save itself
from the predator and not be its
food, the predator runs for the prey
for its food.
5. R
•R is for Respiration.
•All living organisms respire, i.e. they all take in O2
and turn it into Co2 which breaks the food down
releasing energy.
7. S
• S stands for Sensitivity.
• Every living organisms is responsive/ reactive to its surrounding.
• Like you freak out when someone tries to scare you.
• Some plants, like Touch-me-not, is sensitive to touch as it’s compound leaves fold
inwards when touched.
9. G
• All living organisms show signs of Growth.
• Like you get taller as you grow older, so do trees, plants and all the
other living creatures. They all GROW!!!!
• Crustaceans grow by shedding their exoskeleton.
10. Humans, us, growing with time. Crab, a crustacean, shedding its exoskeleton for
growth.
11. R
•R represents Reproduction.
•All organisms reproduce their similar off
springs in order to have a family and
prevent their race from extinction.
12. E
•E stands for Excretion.
•All living organisms give waste and toxic
substances out of their bodies to remain
healthy.
•Eg. Plants excrete carbon dioxide and
oxygen and we and human give out
carbon dioxide.
13. Another example ca be-
humans giving out
unnecessary water as
sweat of their bodies.
14. N
•N is for Nutrition.
•Each and every living thing requires food and
nutrients to get energy, grow and perform all
the other tasks in their life.
•Some of us buy it, some make it, the rest
catch it.
15. Plants feed by making their own food
through photosynthesis.
Heterotrophic animals feed by catching their
food for nutrition.
16. Non- living organisms
• They do not carry out the similar life processes as the
one’s mentioned.
• Even in the absence of one process, the thing will be
termed as non- living.
• E.g.. (in an abstractive way) Clouds move, they are
sensitive to strong winds, they can break to form a
new cloud, they need water vapors to for up, they can
grow larger, they give out rain, but they do not respire.
Thus they are non-living.
