Josie's Case Study Josie is an 11 year old bi–racial adolescent who lives with her single mother.
Josie has been known to have learning and behavioral problems in school, home and community.
Due to her behavioral issues, Josie was asked not to return to her soccer team and is no longer
permitted at their school program. While counseling Josie, she stated that she has been extremely
depressed and she does not care about life. As a human service professional, the ecological model
that I will apply to Josie case is being able to develop a broad understanding of her problems. This

feelings and by doing this Josie is being assured that she will get the proper support she
desperately needs, which will make it easier for me to talk to her about her problems and issues.
As a professional, I am responsible for creating an environment that makes my client feel
comfortable and safe enough to be sharing her feelings without being judged by others. Therefore,
I am in charge of communicating in a way that builds rapport and collaboration in regard to Josie
problems, this actually means I need to think carefully about how I am going to respond to
Josie's problems before I actually do so. Roadblocks that could occur to be a successful advocacy
for this scenario can be due to lack of confidentiality, transportation and money. I feel as young as
Josie is; she is not able to be confidential. Thus, for this scenario, Josie's mother is urged to sign a
blanket release of information, so that when the school requests information on Josie situation, all

I must admit, the youth of today are out of control, they follow the wrong path/crowd just for their
pleasure, leisure and popularity. What is worse with the situation is the youth that are the most out
of control are the individuals living in poverty, majority of these individual rob and kill people,
most of them living in the wrong path of drugs and liquors and most of them involving themselves

This report will first define what mental illness is, the distinctive characteristics that this illness
places on this diverse population and the various impacts that mental illness has had on young New
Zealanders, aged 12 – 18, their families and society. This report will also look at historical evidence
of mental illness within New Zealand and relevant statistics and the resulting legislation and policies
that look to improve the mental health of all New Zealanders.
Lastly I will integrate a social work model to work with young clients with mental illness, whilst
looking at the impacts from an ecological and systems theory lens. I will then reflect on my own
beliefs around mental illness.
Information in this report was gathered both quantitatively, by way of hard, measureable evidence
sourced from various statistics and surveys, and qualitatively, through my interview with Dr. Ian
Baker who is employed by the Hawkes Bay District Health Board and works directly with young

As such the family and religion now have a minimal impact on the average youngster. The values
emphasized today include individualism, Godlessness, materialism, secularism and rationalism. It is
the youth who are encountering the most serious challenge to his/her faith under the impact of
godless culture of modernity.
Best minds in our society are not socialized by religious institutions. The emphasis is on
competitiveness, academic success, career goals, income and social mobility Little or no attention is
given to preparing tomorrows leadership. There is no emphasis is placed on critical thinking ,

The primary causes of homelessness can be there are a lack of affordable housing and the limited
scale of housing assistance programs. Other causes can be insufficient income when people are
frequently unable to pay for housing, food, childcare, health care and education. This means that
difficult choices must be made when limited resources cover only some of these necessities
because of financial reasons. Some homeless people end up on the streets because they may be
physical, psychological, sexual abuse, neglect or abandonment. A study done in 1992 found that 75
percent of street youth were victims of abuse and others were youths that left home when neither
parent wanted custody of them after a divorce and some youth leave to escape parental restrictions
that they consider to be too cruel. In 2000, an American study estimated that 20 percent of homeless
youth had been in foster care before they moved to the streets and over 50 000 children run away
from home.
Being homeless presents many challenges for youth that they normally live day to day, unable to

Programs should focus on strengths of youth instead of simply trying to keep them out of trouble
(Steinberg, 2016, p. 195). The Adolescent Career Path program does exactly this as its goal is to
help adolescents grow skills which will help them in their transition from youth to adulthood as well
as making their lives easier during adolescence. Adolescents will take time with adults in the
community working on their trade or in their line of business. They will learn new skills and areas
where they are proficient. In addition, to working with adults to foster an interest in adult work, these
adolescents will learn about multiple degrees offered in colleges and technical schools. This will
allow opportunities for adolescents to become interested in fields before they are forced into

There is a growing trend of drug abuse among youth which can't be ignored in today's society. It has
been reported that "the greater numbers of young people were reporting weekly consumption of
alcohol and young drinkers were consuming larger amounts per drinking occasion" (Coleman &
Cater, 2003). Teenagers who persistently use drug out of control often experience serious problems.
Those problems are related to physical health, mental health, academic difficulties, social
relationships, and so on. Not only negative effects happened to themselves, but also to the family,

and support self change that could impact treatment retention" (2010, 81). According to Liehr
(2010), Therapeutic Community is an established substance abuse treatment. The environments of
teenage girls are stressful and high school dropout rates are high. That reason is why the MBTC
was created" (2010, 82). During this intervention, the control group (TC group) wrote stories
regarding their feelings and stress, while the experimental group (MBTC) also wrote stories.
There were 140 patients in the TC group and over 250 adolescents in the MBTC group. Both
groups showed decreases in stress and anxiety and increases positive feelings and self change. The
patients in the study report that their stress and anxiety has decreased. The researchers, as well as
the students note that their substance use has decreased as well. The researchers used a host of
surveys, reports, and the Symptoms of Stress Inventory, a self–report assessment, to measure the
study and calculate the results. The statistics show that the level of stress of students who receive
treatment slightly decreased more compared to students who did not have any substance abuse
issues. However, there were not any differences in the groups' feelings of self–change. Another type

semester at front road flats. Specifically, I worked with youth that were in elementary school. My
responsibility was to help them with reading so they can improve their literacy but also by

peaceful manner rather than deteriorating the affairs.
Youth should get motivated and also encourage their peers, colleagues and friends to bring about a
change n the mind set of the whole nation towards critically analyzing the on going state of affairs
in the society and bring all the possible solutions at a table; by joining hands together with various
stake holders including the private sector, Non–government organizations, the educational
institutions and citizen groups. Dissecting and analyzing the basic cause of the problem will lead to
a better understanding of the problem and will lead to health some solutions. Rather than engraving
extremism, intolerance and hatred; there will be a rational decision making with more effective
outcomes. For instance, the on going sugar, power or fuel shortage ;the youth should be curious and
inquisitive enough to support rational decision
