- 6. All the ways that people are different and the same at the individual and group levels. DIVERSITY
- 7. INCLUSION The intentional, ongoing effort to ensure that diverse individuals fully participate in all aspects of an activity including decision-making processes.
- 8. EQUALITY Each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities.
- 9. EQUITY The fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all people, while at the same time striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented the full participation of some groups.
- 10. EQUALITY vs EQUITY “The route to achieving equity will not be accomplished through treating everyone equally. It will be achieved by treating everyone justly according to their circumstances.” — Paula Dressel, Race Matters Institute
- 11. ACCESSIBILIT Y Giving equitable access to everyone along the continuum of human ability and experience.
- 12. CONSCIOUS BIAS To be aware, intentional, and responsive with feelings and attitudes, and related behaviors.
- 13. UNCONSCIOUS BIAS When social stereotypes about certain groups of people are formed outside their own conscious awareness. Everyone holds unconscious beliefs about various social and identity groups, and these biases stem from one’s tendency to organize social worlds by categorizing.
- 14. LGBTQIA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and/or Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual and/or Ally
- 15. DISABILIT Y The ADA defines a person with a disability as a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity.
- 16. A socially constructed category based on observed manifestation of characteristics of presumed, underlying genetic differences. RACE
- 17. ETHNICITY The identification of a group based on a perceived cultural distinctiveness that makes the group into a “people.”
- 18. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RACE & ETHNICITY “Race” refers to physical differences that groups and cultures consider socially significant. “Ethnicity” refers to shared culture, such as language, ancestry, practices, and beliefs.
