Essay about Macbeth's ambition
An ambition for power can seem to be true perfection, but one should be careful what they wish for,
because that power might be exactly what causes their downfall. In the play Macbeth written by
William Shakespeare ambition plays a great role and is also a main theme. Ambition is often the
motivating force in one's life. It is supposed to be the motivating factor that drives one towards
success. The main character, Macbeth has ambition even though it leads him to his downfall. In
contrast, Lady Macbeth pursues her goals with greater determination, yet she is less capable of
withstanding the outcome of her actions. She becomes guilty which leads to her death since she
becomes mentally ill and commits suicide, leaving Macbeth without any...show more content...
IV), Macbeth is angry, he knows to become king he needs to either give up or step over Malcolm
(meaning defeat him or perhaps assassinate Duncan). Macbeth begins to plan his betrayal against
Duncan as he sees Malcolm standing in the way of Macbeth gaining the throne. Macbeth's ambition
to become king leads him to betray his beloved king Duncan.
"Who can be wise, amazed, temp'rate, and furious,
Loyal and neutral, in a moment? No man.
Th' expedition of my violent love
Outrun the pauser, reason." (Macbeth, Act II Sc. II)
Macbeth pretends to show sorrow after hearing the news of Duncan's death, in another way he is
asking himself these questions. This shows that Macbeth is already starting to feel guilty of what
he has done. "To show an unfelt sorrow is an office which the false man does easy." (Malcolm,
Act II, scene III), Macbeth shows false sorrow; he is covering up his lie by showing his sorrow
towards Duncan's death. A liar can easily pretend to feel sorrow even though he doesn't feel any.
Macbeth's ambition led him to lose all the trust and loyalty from his army and thanes, as he
becomes greedy and overconfident of himself. The witches' prophecies have led him to think that
no one can kill him. The prophecies showing truth are next to impossible. The apparitions shown to
Macbeth by the witches include (Act IV Sc. I): He is told to beware Macduff, the Thane of Fife
(Apparition 1 – an armed head),

Role of Ambition in Macbeth Essay
The play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare is based upon old Scotland and this is used as
the general time frame. During this time, Monarchy still existed and Scotland is in war with Whales.
There are many emotions that arise throughout the play, but the most important of all is ambition.
"Ambition is the desire for personal achievement. Ambitious persons seek to be the best at what they
choose to do for attainment, power, or superiority" ("Ambition"). The motif of ambition in the play
is that being ambitious leaves one blind to certain areas and can drive one insane to reach the
intended goal. Numerous characters that showed this trait throughout the play were Banquo,
Macduff, Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth. Banquo was a noble warrior...show more content...
Later in the story, Macbeth does in fact gave Banquo killed and attempts to kill his lineage in fear
that Banquo's line will take his throne. Macduff's ambition in this play was to be loyal to his
country by taking out Macbeth. Too much of his time is spent plotting against Macbeth, which
throws off Macduff's values. He abandons his family and left for England to find Malcolm so he
could wage war against Macbeth. Later, Macbeth hears that the recent absence of Macduff at the
banquet and at Duncan's funeral was because he had fled to England, to find Malcolm. So
Macbeth reacts to this by sending murderers to kill Macduff's family. Once Macduff finds out that
his family is dead, he starts to exhibit some emotion. At this time he is about to wage war on
Macbeth with Malcolm; Malcolm say's to Macduff "Dispute it like a man"(4.3.259). Macduff then
replies, I shall do so; But I must also feel as a man. I cannot but remember such things were That
were most precious to me. Did heaven look on And would not take their part? Sinful Macduff, They
were all struck for thee! Naught that I am, Not for their own demerits, but for mine, Feel slaughter on
their souls. Heaven rest them now. (4.3.260–7) At this point, Macduff realizes that his mistake of
leaving his family in Scotland will cause him a life of pain. Ambition is what ultimately caused this
because without the ambition to kill Macbeth then he would of never left his family. Lady Macbeth's

Shakespeare masterfully exposes the weaknesses of human beings as the foundation for this tragic
play. In Macbeth, it shows the extent to which people will go in order to realize their own ambitions,
even to murder. In Macbeth, evil is the opposite of humanity, the deviation from that which is natural
for human kind, yet originates in the human heart.

In Macbeth ambition plays a huge role in character devolvement. Ambition affects four of the major

Macbeth is. She, through ambition she gives the finial push to Macbeth to kill Duncan the king

Queen, she wants the power of being Queen. Both Lady Macbeth and Macbeths ambition is tragic

an instance where she is sleep walking, eyes open. She goes to her vanity and sits down, she
looks at her hands a sees blood. Then she sticks her hand in the water bowl and attempts to wash

quite know how to make his ambition successful but he knows that it is not worth killing for.

'Macbeth' is a tragic play written by William Shakespeare in the sixteen hundred, it dramatizes the
physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power through the
character of Macbeth. 'The Pursuit Of Happyness' likewise is a film directed by Gabriel Muccino
who portrays a man named Chris Gardener who through his hard work and dedicated ambition goes
from living on the streets to a rich stockbroker. In Macbeth and pursuit of happiness, both authors
explore how ambition can.... (thesis). Macbeth's ambition is portrayed in a negative light as it is
aimed to gain power and status, however, Chris ambition is pushed by his desire to gain happiness
and a better future for him and his son. Similarly, both characters endure toxic spousal relationships
that help them to tap into their ambition but it leads to different portrayal of ambition. Macbeth and
Chris eventually both face the outcome of their ambition for Macbeth it being his doom where else
for Chris it being his success. Shakespeare and Gabriel Muccino explore the theme of ambition
through the protagonists of both plays.
Macbeth and Chris Gardeners ambition have two very polar opposite purposes. While Macbeth's
ambition was solely for his lust for power and status, Chris` ambition was to gain happiness and a
stable life and future for his son. Macbeth's ambition is the essential reason why he went from a
nobleman to a violent tyrant, as the opportunity to become king and become more powerful
presented itself, Macbeth took it and committed great evil while doing so. Macbeth's hunger for
power further grew as he found it unfair that a 'fruitless crown' and a 'barren sceptre' (3.1.60–62) was
placed in his hand as he was destined to wear the crown but also destined to be preceded by
Banquo's son at which point he decided to send men to kill Banquo, his best friend, and his son.
In comparison to the pursuit of happiness where Chris gardeners ambition is fuelled by his
determination to give his son a good life. Chris met his 'father for the first time when [he] was 28

Shakespeare, uses Macbeth's vaulting ambition to show how misused ambition can be a
tremendous flaw. A strong desire to do or achieve something runs in all of us. Some people
possess that quality as a flaw. Shakespeare shows in his writing that leaders with flawed ambition

The Influences of Desire Desire means what people really want to do or to have in deep of their
heart, sometimes it doesn't show on their face. Desire can be people's ambitions, freedom of love,
or a strong body. Here is an example for ambition, in Shakespeare's "Macbeth", the character
Macbeth grows his desire of power after he heard from the three witches that he will be the next
king soon. His ambitions, the desire of power influenced him so much that it turned him into an evil
person. In order to become the next king, he killed his current king that treated him nicely. From this
example, we can see that people's desire can sometimes influence them. Ambition is the one of most
horrible types of desire. People with ambition always wanted more...show more content...
It starts off with Macbeth wins the battle in Norway, and King Duncan invites him to his castle for
a banquet. On the way to King Duncan's castle, Macbeth and his partner, Banquo, met the three
witches, they give him a prophecy that he will become the next king. At first, he didn't want to be
the king, but after his wife's persuasion, his ambition grows. And he grabs the dragger to murder
Duncan. Macbeth can show that people's desire can influence them."To I have no spur To prick
the sides of my intent, but only Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself And falls on th'

man. However this doesn't mean he has no ambitions. In his words," but only Vaulting ambition"
means that he has the ambitions to get more power. In this quote it shows that Macbeth is
influenced by his desire because he didn't have the spur to kill Duncan, but he will kill him because
his desire of power gives him the spur. Another quote that shows Macbeth's desire of power

"I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o'erlaps itself and
falls on th' other–" (Shakespeare 321). Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Macbeth portrays many
characters with high aspirations that not only shape the plot and action of the story, but also the
themes. Additionally, the intentions of the characters and the intensity of their pursuit varies as the
action of the play progresses. Throughout The Tragedy ofMacbeth, main characters exemplify the
positive and negative influence of ambitions through their thoughts, traits, actions, and motivations.
Macbeth's simple ambition for power and status quickly turns into greed and obsession as his
desires become more controlling. When he learns of his fate, Macbeth patiently states"If chance
will have me King, why, chance may crown me, without my stir" (315). However, he grows
restless after swiftly becoming Thane of Cawdor. Furthermore, Macbeth's impatience grows as he
takes matters into his own hands. "Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my
hand? Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, fatal vision,
sensible to feeling as to sight, or art thou but a dagger of the mind, and false creation, proceeding
from the heat–oppressed brain?" (328). Macbeth's imagination becomes troubled as he finds his
thoughts consumed with murdering Duncan, the current king of Scotland. Specifically, these
thoughts influence his actions by prompting him to acquire the strength to ultimately kill the King,
although he feels guilty about his crime. "I am afraid to think what I have done; look on't again I
dare not" (330). Macbeth's guilt is further reflected through this quote and his refusal to associate
with the consequences of the crime he commits. Additionally, Macbeth's actions and thoughts
portray paranoia as he becomes closer to obtaining his predicted future. " Oh full of scorpions is my
mind, dear wife! Thou know'st that Banquo, and his Fleance, lives" (348). Out of his ill mind's
motivations, Macbeth kills Banquo, but his digression as a character shields the guilt he felt after
Duncan's death. Through this, Macbeth begins to recognize the evil consuming his thoughts and

Ambition is often the driving force in one's life. It can have an extremely dominant impact on not
only yourself, but also many people in your surroundings. You have the ability to control if the
outcomes either have a lasting negative or positive effect. When a goal requires determination and
hard work to complete, personal morals often take a back seat to the aspiration of accomplishing
the goal. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, it is clear that like many other great leaders, Macbeth
exemplifies the necessary leadership virtue of ambition. Macbeth's ambition does not just drive him

Macbeth exhibits this quality of ambition. He is the strong, valiant warrior who has won in battle
and brought victory to Scotland. However, Macbeth's quest to acquire more power–his
ambition–ultimately leads to his tragic demise. How can one allow himself to be destroyed by
such a thing? Before Duncan's murder, Macbeth questions and second guesses his ambitious
tendencies and actions. Despite his anxiety, he succumbs to these tendencies and finds himself in
an increasingly precarious situation, with his back against the wall and growing ever closer to his
almost inevitable end. It is obvious that Macbeth has ambition, as most people who are in power

Through all these things, one can clearly see that Macbeth is headed on a path for disaster; a path

As the old saying goes:"Ambition is the path to success.'' If one's desire is greater than its fear of
failure, and he has the courage to pursue his dream, then he will succeed. However in the play
Macbeth, Shakespeare uses imagery to reveal the theme that ambition, if unchecked, leads to the

Through his skillful use of imagery in reference to darkness, disguise and blood, Shakespeare

Shakespeare, the author of Macbeth, portrays what it means to be ambitious through the main
character in his play. This play follows an ambitious man named Macbeth. Three witches tell him a
prophecy in which one part involves him becoming king of Scotland. They never tell him how he
will become king just that he will somehow become one. This causes him to be filled with ambition.
His ambition leads him to kill the current king to make himself king and never ceases to deteriorate

Banquo was the only person with Macbeth when he was told the prophecy. The third part of the
prophecy states that the crown will not go to descendants of Macbeth but of Banquo. It is learned
that Banquo is suspicious of Macbeth when he states, "'Thou hast it now: king, Cawdor, Glamis,
all, As the weird women promised, and I fear Thou played'st most foully for 't'" (Shakespeare III.I

his son regardless because he infinitely sure that the third part of the prophecy will come true unless
he does something because the first two already have. Macbeth hires three murderers and convinces
them to murder Banquo and his son by blaming all their problems on Banquo stating, '"That it was

Throughout the play Macbeth falls deeper and deeper into insanity until he breaks while losing
all conscious and traces of any good. What caused this descent? Well, he had influences such as
the witches and his wife, but I don't believe they were the main cause. I believe that Macbeth
caused his own downfall. He had his ambitions too elevated and he was gullible enough to listen
to the other bad influences around him. He could have just ignored the witches like Banquo did.
Even if he did not ignore them, he still could have said no to his wife. Instead, he took the easy
way to his dreams and tried to fix things himself. Unfortunately, his ambition for more and lust for
power blinded him. He might have gained power, but in the end he lost everything. He lost his
soul, which is the worst thing one has to lose. Macbeth teaches us a lesson on how not to give in
to the lust for power. It's ok to dream, but if you let your ambitions blind you to where you can't
see what is right and wrong anymore then you are losing everything. If the line between right and
wrong is blurred then do not follow that dream. Instead, get into God's word and pray about it. If
your dream is in God's plan for you then he will make it happen in his time. If God tells you it is
not a good idea, then don't do it. If you are patient and wait for Gods will then things will work out.
Don't take the easy way out like Macbeth did.

"Big results require big ambition" Herclitus once said. In Macbeth, the play written by the
inimitable WIlliam Shakespeare, ambition is a key aspect and component of the main character, and
we are introduced to the idea of what drives people to do the unquestionable as a result of ambition.
In Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth's strive for power and unequivocal ambition take
responsibility for the profound tragedies that occur. This is shown through Lady Macbeth's desire for
the accumulation of wealth and power, the social normalities and gender roles during this period
of time, and ultimately Macbeth's ambition and pure desire for power. Lady Macbeth is one of the
main culprits of the murder and bloodshed in this play in multiple ways. "When durst you do it,
then you were a man, and to be more than what, you were, you would be so much more the man"
(Shakespeare 1.7 55–57). In order to encourage the murder upon Macbeth, his wife is questioning his
manhood, making him feel small and inferior. Lady Macbeth takes ultimate responsibility because
without her effort and persuasion, Macbeth's ambition alone could not be the motivating factor of
the murder. Using this tactic worked and made Macbeth feel unworthy, therefore in order to be

eventually be killed himself. Macbeth's ambition was further exposed through Lady Macbeth's use of
gender roles to persuade him. As we see, together they make up the responsibilities that complete the

His fame on the battlefield is rewarded with great honor from his "beloved King Duncan". Although
the opinions of most suggest that he can do no wrong, his ambition is clear to the audience through
his asides and soliloquies. Macbeth is influenced into his crimes by the prophecies of the three
witches and by his wife, Lady Macbeth. The prophecies of the three witches are what first introduce
Macbeth to the idea of power. The prophecies implement ambition into Macbeth which will
eventually to his happiness, deceit of others, and murders. Macbeth's aside proves that he is willing
to defy destiny and create his own future. The quote "If chance

Essay about Ambition in Macbeth
Ambition in Macbeth
A key issue involved in Macbeth is ambition. Ambition is created when determination gets out of
hand. It finds its most significant expressions in the plays two main characters, Macbeth and Lady
Macbeth. The main reason why it all gets started is because of the witches' interference by putting
suggestions into Macbeth's mind. Lady Macbeth's ambition forces him to act on these ambitions as
well. The couple proves that unchecked ambition will ultimately destroy.
Macbeth is a brave man who is not naturally inclined to perform evil deeds, yet he desperately wants
and desires power and succession. At the end, he is not happy with what he has accomplished, "I am
afraid to think what I have...show more content...
"I have almost forgot the taste of fears....Direness, familiar to my thoughts, cannot once start me"
(5.5 9–15). His immediate response to every problem is violence and murder. Banquo's death and
Fleance's death are tied to ambition, showing that this is what he really wants. The murders lead him
to unthinkable acts of killing innocent wives and children, by killing Macduff's family. In contrast to
Macbeth's lack of conscience, Lady Macbeth's ambition causes her conscience to destroy her.
Lady Macbeth, and enormously ambitious woman who lusts for positions and power, performs
her goals with great satisfaction and determination, yet she is not capable of tolerating the
consequences of her dishonest acts. Early in the play, she seems to be the stronger and crueler of
the two, as she drives her husband to kill Duncan and capture the crown. She urges her husband
heartlessly to kill Duncan and questions his manhood. And that if he didn't go through with the
murder he would be seen as a coward. She is eventually driven to distraction of her own
conscience. However, after the bloodshed begins Lady Macbeth is a victim of guilt and madness to
a greater amount than her husband. She is so absorbed in her actions that she sleepwalks at night,
"Will these hands never be clean?"

Ambition And Prophecy In Macbeth Essay
In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, two important themes that take place in the play are ambition
and prophecy. Ambition is often the motivating force in one's life. It is supposed to be the
motivating factor that drives one towards success. In the play, Macbeth has ambition and desire for
power that leads him at the end to his downfall. Furthermore, prophecy is done through the role of
the three witches in the play. Prophecy has its effect onMacbeth and the decisions he makes
throughout the play.
In the beginning of the play, after the visit of the three witches, Macbeth tends to ignore his desires
for power, and depends on chance. "If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me,
without my stir" (I, 3, 143–144), this declaration by Macbeth shows his initial stand, which is
believing in fate and to be sin free. As Macbeth's character develops throughout the play, he moves
from being reliant on chance, to take actions to fulfill his darker desires. However, Lady Macbeth
also has a manipulative mastermind, she possesses the power to influence her husband's decisions
in a negative manner. "... and you shall put This night's great business into my dispatch, Which shall
to all our nights and days to come Give solely sovereign sway and masterdom," (I, 5, 55–60) Lady
Macbeth was the one who conceives the entire plan about murdering king Duncan, and hashes out
the details before Macbeth even truly considers taking action to make the prophecies come true.
"Was the hope drunk Wherein you dressed yourself? Hath it slept since? And wakes it now, to look
so green and pale At what it did so freely? From this time Such I account thy love," (I, 6, 26–40)
even though Macbeth has the desire to become a king, he did not have enough courage to take any
action to fulfil his desire. In contrast, Lady Macbeth is full of courage and will stop at nothing to
get what she wants and desires. She attacks Macbeth's weakest spot, his courage, by convincing him
that he will only be a man if he commits the murder.
Macbeth is a brave man who is not naturally inclined to perform evil deeds, yet he desperately wants
and desires power and succession. At the beginning, Lady Macbeth was being in control and
dominating Macbeth. Later in the

Ambition In Macbeth Essay

  • 1. Essay about Macbeth's ambition An ambition for power can seem to be true perfection, but one should be careful what they wish for, because that power might be exactly what causes their downfall. In the play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare ambition plays a great role and is also a main theme. Ambition is often the motivating force in one's life. It is supposed to be the motivating factor that drives one towards success. The main character, Macbeth has ambition even though it leads him to his downfall. In contrast, Lady Macbeth pursues her goals with greater determination, yet she is less capable of withstanding the outcome of her actions. She becomes guilty which leads to her death since she becomes mentally ill and commits suicide, leaving Macbeth without any...show more content... IV), Macbeth is angry, he knows to become king he needs to either give up or step over Malcolm (meaning defeat him or perhaps assassinate Duncan). Macbeth begins to plan his betrayal against Duncan as he sees Malcolm standing in the way of Macbeth gaining the throne. Macbeth's ambition to become king leads him to betray his beloved king Duncan. "Who can be wise, amazed, temp'rate, and furious, Loyal and neutral, in a moment? No man. Th' expedition of my violent love Outrun the pauser, reason." (Macbeth, Act II Sc. II) Macbeth pretends to show sorrow after hearing the news of Duncan's death, in another way he is asking himself these questions. This shows that Macbeth is already starting to feel guilty of what he has done. "To show an unfelt sorrow is an office which the false man does easy." (Malcolm, Act II, scene III), Macbeth shows false sorrow; he is covering up his lie by showing his sorrow towards Duncan's death. A liar can easily pretend to feel sorrow even though he doesn't feel any. Macbeth's ambition led him to lose all the trust and loyalty from his army and thanes, as he becomes greedy and overconfident of himself. The witches' prophecies have led him to think that no one can kill him. The prophecies showing truth are next to impossible. The apparitions shown to Macbeth by the witches include (Act IV Sc. I): He is told to beware Macduff, the Thane of Fife (Apparition 1 – an armed head), Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Role of Ambition in Macbeth Essay The play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare is based upon old Scotland and this is used as the general time frame. During this time, Monarchy still existed and Scotland is in war with Whales. There are many emotions that arise throughout the play, but the most important of all is ambition. "Ambition is the desire for personal achievement. Ambitious persons seek to be the best at what they choose to do for attainment, power, or superiority" ("Ambition"). The motif of ambition in the play is that being ambitious leaves one blind to certain areas and can drive one insane to reach the intended goal. Numerous characters that showed this trait throughout the play were Banquo, Macduff, Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth. Banquo was a noble warrior...show more content... Later in the story, Macbeth does in fact gave Banquo killed and attempts to kill his lineage in fear that Banquo's line will take his throne. Macduff's ambition in this play was to be loyal to his country by taking out Macbeth. Too much of his time is spent plotting against Macbeth, which throws off Macduff's values. He abandons his family and left for England to find Malcolm so he could wage war against Macbeth. Later, Macbeth hears that the recent absence of Macduff at the banquet and at Duncan's funeral was because he had fled to England, to find Malcolm. So Macbeth reacts to this by sending murderers to kill Macduff's family. Once Macduff finds out that his family is dead, he starts to exhibit some emotion. At this time he is about to wage war on Macbeth with Malcolm; Malcolm say's to Macduff "Dispute it like a man"(4.3.259). Macduff then replies, I shall do so; But I must also feel as a man. I cannot but remember such things were That were most precious to me. Did heaven look on And would not take their part? Sinful Macduff, They were all struck for thee! Naught that I am, Not for their own demerits, but for mine, Feel slaughter on their souls. Heaven rest them now. (4.3.260–7) At this point, Macduff realizes that his mistake of leaving his family in Scotland will cause him a life of pain. Ambition is what ultimately caused this because without the ambition to kill Macbeth then he would of never left his family. Lady Macbeth's ambition Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In Macbeth, it shows the extent to which people will go in order to realize their own ambitions, even to murder. In Macbeth, evil is the opposite of humanity, the deviation from that which is natural for human kind, yet originates in the human heart. In Macbeth, it shows the extent to which people will go in order to realize their own ambitions, even to murder. Explaining Macbeth envisioning a dagger, guiding him toward Duncan's chamber where he is to be put to eternal rest. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth seem so into it and with no care or intentions of forgiveness or thoughts about the after consequences. Lady Macbeth claiming she just couldn't murder Duncan, therefore, forcing Macbeth , only since Duncan resembles her father. This shows she is all talk, meaning she exaggerates what she is planning but, doesn't want the murdering guilt on her soul eternally. There is confusion in the dialogue between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, which shows fear, communication breaking down:'relationship'. The characters are Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Malcom, and Banquo. The sisters are the source of Ambition. It is as if they control ambition. The ambition the sisters' control is negative ambition. Ambition is, wanting to have more then you have and wanting it now. Macbeth's ambition is powered by the sisters. Lady Macbeth is more power hungry and ambitious then Macbeth is. She, through ambition she gives the finial push to Macbeth to kill Duncan the king of Scotland. Her power however, is not driven by the sisters, hers is greed. She wants to be Queen, she wants the power of being Queen. Both Lady Macbeth and Macbeths ambition is tragic flaw. Her ambition drives her to her to go crazy which ultimately drives her to her death. There is an instance where she is sleep walking, eyes open. She goes to her vanity and sits down, she looks at her hands a sees blood. Then she sticks her hand in the water bowl and attempts to wash them. When she pulls them back out the blood did not wash away. Only she can see the blood her maid and doctor see this happening and they just think that she is going crazy. This is only the beginning of her insaneness. Just before her death she vilely reads a letter that Macbeth sent to her, telling her that he was to be King some how. It is her guilt that kills her. Banquo's ambition is unlike Macbeths and Lady Macbeths, his ambition does not drive him to kill. His ambition is he wants his son to become king, and he wants his son's son to become king and so on. He does not quite know how to make his ambition successful but he knows that it is not worth killing for. Macbeth's ambition is portrayed in a negative light as it is aimed to gain power and status, however, Chris ambition is pushed by his desire to gain happiness and a better future for him and his son. Similarly, both characters endure toxic spousal relationships that help them to tap into their ambition but it leads to different portrayal of ambition. Macbeth and Chris eventually both face the outcome of their ambition for Macbeth it being his doom where else for Chris it being his success. Shakespeare and Gabriel Muccino explore the theme of ambition through the protagonists of both plays. Macbeth and Chris Gardeners ambition have two very polar opposite purposes. While Macbeth's ambition was solely for his lust for power and status, Chris` ambition was to gain happiness and a stable life and future for his son. Macbeth's ambition is the essential reason why he went from a nobleman to a violent tyrant, as the opportunity to become king and become more powerful presented itself, Macbeth took it and committed great evil while doing so. Macbeth's hunger for power further grew as he found it unfair that a 'fruitless crown' and a 'barren sceptre' (3.1.60–62) was placed in his hand as he was destined to wear the crown but also destined to be preceded by Banquo's son at which point he decided to send men to kill Banquo, his best friend, and his son. In comparison to the pursuit of happiness where Chris gardeners ambition is fuelled by his determination to give his son a good life. Desire can be people's ambitions, freedom of love, or a strong body. Here is an example for ambition, in Shakespeare's "Macbeth", the character Macbeth grows his desire of power after he heard from the three witches that he will be the next king soon. His ambitions, the desire of power influenced him so much that it turned him into an evil person. In order to become the next king, he killed his current king that treated him nicely. At first, he didn't want to be the king, but after his wife's persuasion, his ambition grows. And he grabs the dragger to murder Duncan. Macbeth can show that people's desire can influence them."To I have no spur To prick the sides of my intent, but only Vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself And falls on th' other"(1.7.1). From Macbeth's quote it shows that Macbeth knows that King Duncan is a good king when he says " To I have no spur", he have no "spur" because he thinks it's bad to kill a good man. However this doesn't mean he has no ambitions. In his words," but only Vaulting ambition" means that he has the ambitions to get more power. • 8. Ambition And Ambition In Macbeth "I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o'erlaps itself and falls on th' other–" (Shakespeare 321). Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Macbeth portrays many characters with high aspirations that not only shape the plot and action of the story, but also the themes. Additionally, the intentions of the characters and the intensity of their pursuit varies as the action of the play progresses. Throughout The Tragedy ofMacbeth, main characters exemplify the positive and negative influence of ambitions through their thoughts, traits, actions, and motivations. Macbeth's simple ambition for power and status quickly turns into greed and obsession as his desires become more controlling. When he learns of his fate, Macbeth patiently states"If chance will have me King, why, chance may crown me, without my stir" (315). However, he grows restless after swiftly becoming Thane of Cawdor. Furthermore, Macbeth's impatience grows as he takes matters into his own hands. "Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible to feeling as to sight, or art thou but a dagger of the mind, and false creation, proceeding from the heat–oppressed brain?" (328). Macbeth's imagination becomes troubled as he finds his thoughts consumed with murdering Duncan, the current king of Scotland. Specifically, these thoughts influence his actions by prompting him to acquire the strength to ultimately kill the King, although he feels guilty about his crime. "I am afraid to think what I have done; look on't again I dare not" (330). Macbeth's guilt is further reflected through this quote and his refusal to associate with the consequences of the crime he commits. Additionally, Macbeth's actions and thoughts portray paranoia as he becomes closer to obtaining his predicted future. " Oh full of scorpions is my mind, dear wife! Thou know'st that Banquo, and his Fleance, lives" (348). Out of his ill mind's motivations, Macbeth kills Banquo, but his digression as a character shields the guilt he felt after Duncan's death. Through this, Macbeth begins to recognize the evil consuming his thoughts and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Throughout the play Macbeth falls deeper and deeper into insanity until he breaks while losing all conscious and traces of any good. What caused this descent? Well, he had influences such as the witches and his wife, but I don't believe they were the main cause. I believe that Macbeth caused his own downfall. He had his ambitions too elevated and he was gullible enough to listen to the other bad influences around him. He could have just ignored the witches like Banquo did. Even if he did not ignore them, he still could have said no to his wife. Instead, he took the easy way to his dreams and tried to fix things himself. Unfortunately, his ambition for more and lust for power blinded him. He might have gained power, but in the end he lost everything. He lost his soul, which is the worst thing one has to lose. Macbeth teaches us a lesson on how not to give in to the lust for power. It's ok to dream, but if you let your ambitions blind you to where you can't see what is right and wrong anymore then you are losing everything. If the line between right and wrong is blurred then do not follow that dream. Instead, get into God's word and pray about it. If your dream is in God's plan for you then he will make it happen in his time. If God tells you it is not a good idea, then don't do it. If you are patient and wait for Gods will then things will work out. Don't take the easy way out like Macbeth did. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It finds its most significant expressions in the plays two main characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. The main reason why it all gets started is because of the witches' interference by putting suggestions into Macbeth's mind. Lady Macbeth's ambition forces him to act on these ambitions as well. The couple proves that unchecked ambition will ultimately destroy. Lady Macbeth, and enormously ambitious woman who lusts for positions and power, performs her goals with great satisfaction and determination, yet she is not capable of tolerating the consequences of her dishonest acts. Early in the play, she seems to be the stronger and crueler of the two, as she drives her husband to kill Duncan and capture the crown. She urges her husband heartlessly to kill Duncan and questions his manhood. And that if he didn't go through with the murder he would be seen as a coward. She is eventually driven to distraction of her own conscience. However, after the bloodshed begins Lady Macbeth is a victim of guilt and madness to a greater amount than her husband. • 20. Ambition And Prophecy In Macbeth Essay In William Shakespeare's Macbeth, two important themes that take place in the play are ambition and prophecy. Ambition is often the motivating force in one's life. It is supposed to be the motivating factor that drives one towards success. In the play, Macbeth has ambition and desire for power that leads him at the end to his downfall. Furthermore, prophecy is done through the role of the three witches in the play. Prophecy has its effect onMacbeth and the decisions he makes throughout the play. In the beginning of the play, after the visit of the three witches, Macbeth tends to ignore his desires for power, and depends on chance. "If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me, without my stir" (I, 3, 143–144), this declaration by Macbeth shows his initial stand, which is believing in fate and to be sin free. As Macbeth's character develops throughout the play, he moves from being reliant on chance, to take actions to fulfill his darker desires. However, Lady Macbeth also has a manipulative mastermind, she possesses the power to influence her husband's decisions in a negative manner. "... and you shall put This night's great business into my dispatch, Which shall to all our nights and days to come Give solely sovereign sway and masterdom," (I, 5, 55–60) Lady Macbeth was the one who conceives the entire plan about murdering king Duncan, and hashes out the details before Macbeth even truly considers taking action to make the prophecies come true. "Was the hope drunk Wherein you dressed yourself? Hath it slept since? And wakes it now, to look so green and pale At what it did so freely? From this time Such I account thy love," (I, 6, 26–40) even though Macbeth has the desire to become a king, he did not have enough courage to take any action to fulfil his desire. In contrast, Lady Macbeth is full of courage and will stop at nothing to get what she wants and desires. She attacks Macbeth's weakest spot, his courage, by convincing him that he will only be a man if he commits the murder. Macbeth is a brave man who is not naturally inclined to perform evil deeds, yet he desperately wants and desires power and succession.
