I.Introduction
A moral compass is the moral guide on which a person bases his/her decisions and distinguishes
what is right from what is wrong. With our moral compass, we know what rules we should play by.
When I was a child, I learnt Chinese traditional wisdom, Confucianism, from my parents and
elementary school. The core of Confucianism is humanity, to be altruistic, upright and courteous
within the society, from which I got to know the rules I should honor. Never cheat. Be kind and
honest. Don't do anything that will hurt others. These become the foundation of my moral compass.

According to my moral vision, I make my own code of conduct. First, don't judge. I shouldn't
judge others' choices because they have their own rights to choose freely. Second, don't do
anything that will violate others' basic rights. Examples are as covering my cough, not making
noise when roommates are sleeping, etc. If I choose to do the opposite, it would make no
difference to me, but it would put other people's rights at stake. Third, others have no saying in my
decisions. I expect people to respect my rights and not to control or disturb me. Just as the way I
respect them, they should respect me.
III.Defining Moment
My moral compass gives me guidance on many decision making situations. However, chances are
high that interests of different groups cannot always be saved at the same time. Under these
circumstances, no matter which one I choose, there would always be someone whose rights would
be violated. This is my defining moment.
There is no such thing as "absolute good" but "good for". Whenever I meet my defining moment, I
think about the question, "Whose good should I be serving?" I am not saying to evaluate whose
interests are more valuable, but to evaluate whose interests are more important TO ME. There are

Moral dilemma's and our decision are based upon to what we see as experience, interpreting and
also studying or analyzing our decisions before we act. We may never know what could happen
if we just stand by and let bad things happen. I went to a Cumberland Farms one night to get a
coffee. When I walked inside to get a coffee I saw two kids and a father eating at the counter.
After I had made the coffee, I went and paid then proceeded to leave. When I walked out I saw the

My view of human morality is that it is influenced by individual culture and experience. Because I
believe that as human beings, we all have our own values, beliefs and attitudes that we develop
throughout the course of our lives and contribute to our own sense of reality of ourselves and the

something like "if you knew how much they were bugging me, you would know why I hit them."
People are so concerned about breaking these rules they are constantly making excuses. Why

I have designed an experiment that will help determine if girls are more moral than boys. Through
the local elementary and junior high schools in Los Angeles, California I have found 25 girls and
25 boys that range from five to twelve years of age. All the students come from affluent
neighborhoods and are from households that have married parents and they are all Caucasians.
During this experiment the first thing that will be done is to divide the children up according to age
and sex. The children will then view videotapes, which are the independent variable, of set–up moral
scenarios and write down what they would do in that particular situation that they had viewed. The
dependent variable of this experiment is the moral outcome. All the participants in this experiment
are in a controlled environment. A few of the problems with this experiment are that the group of
students comes from the same background, same area, and all from married parents. There is no
diversity in ethnicity or culture. This experiment may not prove my hypothesis to be correct but it
may help to validate whether or not this topic is promising enough to continue on with the
research. If the findings are true and girls are more moral than boys we need to find out why that

It was about 13 degrees out and the sun had just started to peek over the mountains behind our
house. It was a magnificent morning. It was one of those crisp, cold mornings with no wind and I

Each day, with the new experiences and challenges a new day brings, we may find ourselves
facing the trials of what morality truly means to us. A few months ago, if you had asked me to
tell you what my morals were and how I would interpret the term morality, I would have just told

One is the ancient system, a system that developed before humans could speak. This system drives
our emotions. It is with this system that humans received their instinctual reactions to specific
situations; it is these sorts of "gut reactions" that enabled human survival in ancient times. The other
is a modern system, a system that initiated when language was invented. This system, he explains,
is more associated with our ability to reason and judge. This system allows us to question our
instinctual reactions and determine some explanation as to why we feel a particular way. However,
he feels that these two complex systems are subconsciously active within the individual; he does not
believe that people are aware of these concepts affecting their morality. These two systems are the
key or answer to why moral dumbfounding occurs. It occurs when the two systems conflictВ—when
reasoning cannot explain your initial reaction. Furthermore, Haidt believes that emotions are linked
more to one's subconscious, while reasoning is linked to one's consciousness. He believes most

Philosophers around the world have debated the meaning of morality for centuries. However, it is
a word too subjective to be either denoted or defined. Aristotle, often referred to as the father of
philosophy, advised that one could determine what is moral by examining the mean between two
"less desirable" extremes. For example, courage is a mean between fear and thoughtless rashness;
generosity, between extravagance and parsimony. Plato argued that "to know the good is to do the
good." In other words, those who behave immorally due so out of mere ignorance, not defiance.

This reward system trains us to believe that what is legal is moral. Although a person may be a
law–abiding citizen, he or she may not necessarily be moral.
The morality of an individual is also based on his or her childhood. Parents have an immense effect
on their children's values. For instance, if parents teach their child at early ages to be a hard–worker,
to be honest and true, and to have integrity, then it is likely that the child will grow up with these
morals instilled within them. However, some children grow to be the antithesis of their parents.
They see that their parents are immoral and so they intentionally grow to think and behave

Another factor in determining one's morals is one's religiosity. For instance, some religions, such as
Hinduism, believe in animal sacrifices as a way of worshiping; however, other religions, such as
Catholicism, do not. Thus, to a Catholic, the sacrifice of innocent animals may seem immoral
