1. SSRP: HARVARD
REFERENCING
Today you are going to learn how to reference
research items using Harvard Referencing
You MUST reference all your research materials
otherwise you are plagarising the work of another
author.
2. You will need to reference the films you
use like this:
• Title of film
• Year of distribution (in brackets)
• Material type (eg animation)
• Director
• Format of source [in square brackets]
• Distribution company
For example:
The Colour Purple (1998) Film. Directed by Steven
Spielberg [DVD] Warner Bros.
3. You will need to reference books with 1
author like this:
• Family/ surname, Initials
• (publication year in brackets)
• Book title- italicised
• Series title and volume if applicable
• Edition
• Place of publication
For example
Noble, A (2005) Mexican National Cinema. Routledge
4. You will need to reference books with
editors like this:
• Family/ surname, Initials (ed or eds)
• (publication year in brackets)
• Book title- italicised
• Series title and volume if applicable
• Edition
• Place of publication
For example
Aaron, M. (ed). (2004) New Queer Cinema. A Critical
Reader. Edinburgh University Press
5. You need to reference a chapter in an
edited book like this:
• Family/ surname, initials of the author writing the chapter
• (publication year in brackets)
• Title of chapter.
• In: family/ surname, initials of author/ editor of book
• Book title italicised
• Series title/ volume if applicable
• Edition
• Publisher
For example
Wallenberg, L. (2004) New Black Queer Cinema in Aaron,
M (ed) New Queer Cinema: A Critical Reader. Edinburgh
University Press
6. You need to reference websites like this:
• Author of website family/ surname, initials or website
name if no author
• Year (in brackets)
• Title of website italicised
• [online]
• Available from: URL
• Accessed: [date in square brackets]
For example
BBC News. (2008) Factory gloom worst since 1980. [online] Available
from: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7681569.stm. [Accessed: 19th
June 2012]
7. You need to reference magazine articles
like this:
• Family/ surname initials of author
• Year and month (in brackets)
• Title of article
• Magazine article is from
• Page number(s)
For example
