ROMANTICISM
“ A shipwreck”, Gericault (1817-18)
ROMANTICISM

Literary movement of the 18th and 19th
centuries.
It meant a reaction against Neoclassical
Literature, which valued reason and
demanded order in beauty.
ROMANTIC LITERATURE
CHARACTERISTICS

 Predominance of IMAGINATION over reason
 Love of NATURE
 An interest in the PAST
 INDIVIDUALISM
Enthusiasm for the WILD, GROTESQUE in
 Nature
 Interest in the GOTHIC
GOTHIC LITERATURE

It developed in the late 18th century.

Fascination for the grotesque, the unknown, the frightening aspects of
the universe and the human soul. Victor Frankenstein wants to give life to dead bodies, using his scientific
knowledge. Wrong use of Science.

Human individuals confronting terrifying forces found in the cosmos
and within themselves. Hunger for finding answers to the unknown (death, storms, lightning, ...)

Mixture of good and evil powers that cannot be understood by human
reason. The monster. He is rejected by his master and so he seeks revenge. He wants to feel loved and as he can´t find it he decides to
finish with what’s most loved by his master.

The struggle between good and evil in the human soul.
We can find all these characteristics in “FRANKENSTEIN”. Let’s think about examples from
the novel.
HAVE A LOOK AT THIS PICTURE.
What does it sugggest?
WATCH AND LISTEN!!! ( “ANNABEL LEE”, EDGAR ALLAN POE )
Now listen to this version of the poem, by
Radio Futura. Pay attention to the images,
as they are clearly very gothic/romantic.
