6. In parallel with my work at the Orchestras, since 2006, I have been teaching at several music schools in Toronto, including “Weston Music School” http://www.westonmusicschool.com Aside from teaching I do session work for recording studios and perform in concerts.
7. Since 2009 I have been fruitfully collaborating with “Blaisdale Montessori School” teaching a program developed by me called The Brain Development Program for children ( http:// www.blaisdale.com ). My program is widely used and popular among the school’s parents and students.
8. Program Information: Drum playing is fascinating and attention-grabbing. Having studied the theory of ART of the modern drum set performance and having had extensive practical experience, as well as observing my own students, I have gradually came to the conclusion that learning that is based on independent coordination highly stimulates brain activity in children. This program is supported by the study results of scientists: Dr. E . Glenn Shallenberg at the University of Toronto N . А . Bernshtein (1896—1966) — A distinguished scholar with a worldwide known name, the founder of a new area in science he modestly called “ physiology of activity ” Neurologist Barry Bittman of the Mind-Body Wellness Center in Meadville, Pennsylvania
9. According to the study by E. Glenn Shallenberg at the University of Toronto, IQ test scores of 6-year-old children significantly improved after receiving drum lessons. Shallenberg recruited a group of 144 six (6) year olds and separated them into 4 groups: those receiving drum lessons, voice lessons, drama lessons and no lessons. Children receiving the drum lessons showed significant improvement in their IQ tests, gaining an average of 7 IQ points. Meanwhile, children receiving voice lessons increased 6 points, those receiving drama lessons increased 5 points and children receiving no lessons improved 4 points. In his article in Psychological Science, Shallenberg concluded that musical training, in particular, was responsible for the extra IQ points.
10. Further research brought N.A. Bernshtein to the hypothesis that movement construction of varying degrees of difficulty requires “commands” to be given on hierarchically differing levels of the nervous system. ( “On Bravery and its Development” N.A. Bernshtein). N.A. Bernshtein proved that for the purpose of performing a physical movement, the brain not only sends a specific command to the muscles but also receives signals from the peripheral organs of the achieved results. Furthermore, the brain uses these results to adjust and correct the movement using subsequent commands, based on these results. This becomes the process of movement building, where the brain and the peripheral nervous system send messages back and forth.
11. American Scientist, Barry Bittman, in one of his studies, demonstrated that a jointly executed rhythmic music, positively affects our physiology, and regulates our hormonal balance. More importantly, it was evident that cell activity particularly that involved in killing viruses, bacteria, and cancerous growths was increased. This fact has already been known; killer cell activity decreases under the conditions of chronic stress and increases with positive emotions, laughter, and physical exercise. However, he was the first one to prove that the mere sense of bonding with other people, through music, can affect the immune system largely the same way. Blood work results have shown that after only a one hour session of drumming there is an elimination of hormonal stress reactions and an increase in the natural killer-cell activity.
