James Welling was born in 1951, and
visited many art museums and galleries
in New York.
He Studied drawing, painting, and video
early in his career as an artist.
In 1970 he began taking his first black
and white photographs, night shots of

In 1975 Welling began taking Polaroid
pictures with long exposures, and would
heat the prints during development.
Welling never studied photography at an
institution, but in fall of 1976 he set up his
own dark room to experiment and learn
the process of developing and printing.
This was all just the beginning of his
photography career, and his love for
color.
6. One of the first projects he started was the
“Diary/Landscape” series, and he worked on it from 1977
till he finally finished it in 1986.
7. The “Diary/Landscape” series was inspired by the
handwriting in the 1940's diary and journals of his great-
great- grandparents, while at the same time photography
Connecticut landscape.
10. Wellings Series titled “Light Source” started in 1992 marks his
first project using digital photography.
In this project
Welling worked
with multiple
exposures, and
photographed
subjects that
literally
transmitted light.
14. Welling works with color
In 1995 Welling moved to Los Angeles to work at UCLA as the head of their
Photography area in the art department.
Soon after Welling began photographing and developing with color filters.
He completed his project “Hexachromes” in 2005.
15. These photographs were made by exposing the same sheet of
4x5 film through several different colored filters.
