Cox Communications Case: Research & Analysis Skim read case Understand context in which case takes place (company health, previous activities, what are competitors doing, etc.) Re-read case, focusing closely on data that is relevant to problem and stakeholders Before formulating communications strategy, examine strategies and messages of firms in similar industries and markets Determine “good” and “bad” examples – particularly look for examples with quantifiable costs and benefits
Strategies for Successful Community Relations Know your objective: business vs. charity Determine, track and report back on performance measures Partner with credible people/organizations – do your homework! Make sure partners serve/represent your target demographic(s) Find ways to do more than just write a check Tours, guest speakers, volunteer Use community relations as a means of differentiating your company from its competitors in the same community Coordinate and leverage paid advertising – “earned media”
10 Tips for Good Case Presentation Frame Your Presentation (WIIFY, Who are you/audience?) BLOT (Bottom Line on Top, Problem/Solution) Provide a supportive team environment Show confidence (good eye contact, navigate subjectivity) Talk to the audience and not to the screen Convey professionalism in appearance and dialog Use hidden slides to drive Q&A (Q&A extends presentation) Avoid dog piling during Q&A Be trustworthy (i.e. don’t know, out of scope or will follow-up) Have Fun!

Handling Questions During a Presentation Maintain control Intelligence gather before event – who is audience and what are their concerns? Anticipate toughest questions and practice answers Have one person fielding and assigning questions Be careful when re-stating questions; don’t say “good question” Important: “I don’t know” can be your friend – but give a timeline for your follow up and do it! Always come back to your message/recommendations – view every question as an opportunity to reinforce your message
