Unlocking the power of knowledge
        for social change

                               1
Mission Statement Revised Dec 2009

DataCenter unlocks the power of knowledge
  for social change.

We support grassroots organizing for justice
 and sustainability through strategic
 research, training and collaborations.

We use research to help move the
 knowledge and solutions of communities
of color, indigenous communities and the
poor from the margins to the center of
 decision-making.

                                                      2
“Research”: How you create Political
Legitimacy behind your voice as Experts

                                          3
We believe ‘Research Justice’ is
      Achieved when Communities have….

1. access to information/knowledge,
2. control over information/knowledge,
3. capacity for producing own knowledge,
4. capacity for use of knowledge, and
5. Influence to shape validity/legitimacy of
     knowledge

…on equal footing with all institutions in
  society.

                                                 4
The ‘Ecosystem of knowledge’

                  Mainstream knowledge:

            “universities” “city
                 hall” “courts”

Schweidler of DataCenter, at Republica Conference, Berlin, May 2012

                                                                                                          7
Time is now!
Wider stakeholder engagement to build
         a stronger movement

 “Bridging” data, knowledge and
    consciousness across sectors,
    generations and cultures
 Support accurate, bottom-up,
    disaggregated community data in
    policy analysis, policy-making and
    grant-making.
 Strategic Presentations for Research
    Justice field-building

                                           8
DataCenter is Jazzed… In 2011…

¡ We trained 322
    community members in
    their own research.
¡ Our trainings reached
    an organizing base of
    20,000.
¡ We surpassed
    grassroots donor target
    by 9%!

And…We are turning 35 in
  2013!

                                            9
The Critical Path: 2012-2014
¡ Build a national platform for Research Justice agenda
via the Research Justice Network (rooted in Social
     Justice Movement, and has multi-sector
     representation)
¡ Strengthen DataCenter as a Movement Institution:
Grow our Board, Advisory & Committees, and
     Infrastructure & Systems;
¡ Programmatic Sustainability:
    1. Strengthen Innovation/R&D/Technology as
        Community Research accelerators;
    2. Resource, Grow & Sustain Program Services
(Strategic Initiatives with Academy, Health &
        Planning sectors)

                                                             10

 Advisory Board (“Research Justice Partners”)
 “Health advocates for Research Justice”

    planning (2013); other partnership opportunities
Our Value Criteria for Our Growing
Team
 • “I love Research!” (…it’s about producing Knowledge –
   and knowledge is power!)
 • I believe grassroots communities have a right to
conduct their own inquiries and generate their own
   knowledge – and expertise.
 • I believe grassroots research capacity is key for
building grassroots political power for change.
 • I am interested in or work in a diverse, collaborative
   team environment.
 • I have capacity to negotiate my commitments and
then fulfill them or communicate changes in my
   capacity proactively.
 • I am interested in being an ambassador for DataCenter
and its Research Justice agenda to the public.

                                                        12

DataCenter 'Talent Scout' Introduction 2012

  • 1. DataCenter Unlocking the power of knowledge for social change 1
  • 2. Mission Statement Revised Dec 2009 DataCenter unlocks the power of knowledge for social change. We support grassroots organizing for justice and sustainability through strategic research, training and collaborations. We use research to help move the knowledge and solutions of communities of color, indigenous communities and the poor from the margins to the center of decision-making. 2
  • 3. “Research”: How you create Political Legitimacy behind your voice as Experts 3
  • 4. We believe ‘Research Justice’ is Achieved when Communities have…. 1. access to information/knowledge, 2. control over information/knowledge, 3. capacity for producing own knowledge, 4. capacity for use of knowledge, and 5. Influence to shape validity/legitimacy of knowledge …on equal footing with all institutions in society. 4
  • 5. The ‘Ecosystem of knowledge’ Mainstream knowledge: “Census” “universities” “city hall” “courts” Just & Sustainable Solutions Cultural and Experiential knowledge Community knowledge “History of my family’s “Cooking greens!” immigration to country,” “getting out there & actually how to survive and speaking for ourselves!” navigate the court system (because “we are the once caught up, etc. experts” of issues we face.) 5
  • 6. Qualitative Data Analysis to Identify Priority Issues for Young Khmer Women, Khmer Girls in Action, Long Beach, CA “When we apply the principles of grassroots organizing to research, this is what it looks like.” l Movement-building through 6
  • 7. DataCenter coordinates Research by and for movement formations and popular efforts “Academia Occupied by Occupy” April 30, 2012 “Research by and of Social Movements” by Sasha Costanza-Chock, MIT (DataCenter Advisor) and Christine Schweidler of DataCenter, at Republica Conference, Berlin, May 2012 7
  • 8. Time is now! Wider stakeholder engagement to build a stronger movement  “Bridging” data, knowledge and consciousness across sectors, generations and cultures  Support accurate, bottom-up, disaggregated community data in policy analysis, policy-making and grant-making.  Strategic Presentations for Research Justice field-building 8
  • 9. DataCenter is Jazzed… In 2011… ¡ We trained 322 community members in their own research. ¡ Our trainings reached an organizing base of 20,000. ¡ We surpassed grassroots donor target by 9%! And…We are turning 35 in 2013! 9
  • 10. The Critical Path: 2012-2014 ¡ Build a national platform for Research Justice agenda via the Research Justice Network (rooted in Social Justice Movement, and has multi-sector representation) ¡ Strengthen DataCenter as a Movement Institution: Grow our Board, Advisory & Committees, and Infrastructure & Systems; ¡ Programmatic Sustainability: 1. Strengthen Innovation/R&D/Technology as Community Research accelerators; 2. Resource, Grow & Sustain Program Services (Strategic Initiatives with Academy, Health & Planning sectors) 10
  • 11. DataCenter Opportunities of Service and Partnerships!  Board of Directors  Advisory Board (“Research Justice Partners”)  “Health advocates for Research Justice”  Committees as Volunteer Members  Finance Committee  Development Committee  Major Gifts/Donor Program Advisory Committee  Program Committee  Talent Committee (HR)  Etc….. • 12. Our Value Criteria for Our Growing Team • “I love Research!” (…it’s about producing Knowledge – and knowledge is power!) • I believe grassroots communities have a right to conduct their own inquiries and generate their own knowledge – and expertise. • I believe grassroots research capacity is key for building grassroots political power for change. • I am interested in or work in a diverse, collaborative team environment. • I have capacity to negotiate my commitments and then fulfill them or communicate changes in my capacity proactively. • I am interested in being an ambassador for DataCenter and its Research Justice agenda to the public. 12

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. My hope: in 10 minutes, you’ll have a sense of what we’re about, research justice and the niche we seek to fill with this work, and the way we wish to move forward. First 5 slides are quick intro, but I skip history. Slides 6-9 are exapmple snapshots of our work. Slides 10-
  2. We are Experts, not Victims; not Expert: Someone widely recognized as a reliable source, whose faculty for judging or deciding rightly, justly, or wisely is accorded with authority and status by their peers or public in a specific domain . Research by and for community can build their leadership & confidence
  3. “ There is often a divide that treats academic and other Western approaches as more legitimate than experiential and cultural knowledge of those affected. Data Center bridges these divides.” “ DataCenter taps into the power of all levels of knowledge to create powerful tools for advocacy and community-building. DataCenter knows how to find key public data, draw out knowledge from those affected, and present information so it’s easy for many audiences to use.” “ DataCenter’s strength is that they know how to engage poor communities and people of color in ways that serve their own solutions to social, economic and environmental injustice.” Mainstream knowledge : Source of Political Power Cultural and Community knowledge & Experiential Knowledge : Sources of Spiritual/Cultural Power Research can be tools to build specific types of power, based on your community’s goals!
  4. Research by, of, and for the Movement: Someone said, “if you don’t tell your story someone else will tell it for you.” we tell our stories with allies and partners.
  5. links movements, philanthropy and policy-makers: UC Berkeley graduate students have turned to us to possibly broker service learning/internship of grad students in CBO’s – but slightly different framework of mutual learning. Grad students learn about organizing, managing group dynamics, being an “ ally ” and what that means through their contained & structured experience. Classes/orientation up front, monitoring & support throughout, and then close-out @ end. Older generation activists are turning to us to figure out how we can help bridge the gap of knowledge between generations within a specific sector of movement.
  6. Scale of impact: in 2011, approximately, 855 people were impacted by services or support DataCenter provided (i.e. attended trainings, learned research methods, outreach to due to research). More than 20,000 people were indirectly impacted by DataCenter, by partnering with Alliances and conducting T4Ts. Successful founder’s retirement in 2010, declared “a new era of Research Justice,” building on the past three decades of the Right to Know legacy. RJ Movement is about saying look we not only own all the knowledge within the ecosystem of knowledge in the world – we are also going to step outside of it and look back in, and create an ecosystem that’s actually equitable for the long haul. “permanent informational level playing field.” In 2011, surpassed expected donation by 9%: we believe donors “voted” to endorse this new direction of the organization with their gifts. Now we have demonstrated success of this model thru NDWA etc. since it was 1 org. KGA, Winnemem, PrYSM. Now, ILO is closely watching this model. CBPR and PAR allies are closely watching but recognize it’s not just methods, it’s who does it. institutions pose limitation. We have the evidence, the stories from beginning to end. DC is turning 35!
