2. Lab Jobs
Primary Investigator – Read the directions to the lab and keep
everyone on task.
Recorder/Reporter – Get everyone a lab sheet & pencil.
Safety Inspector/Timer – Get everyone goggles & work the
timer.
Materials Manager – Gather these supplies:
2 antacid tablets
Two beakers or plastic cups
Tweezers or forceps
Piece of paper towel
Small block of wood
Timer (You may use a personal device for this or your PI’s computer.)
3. Purpose
The purpose of this lab is to determine which antacid tablet will
dissolve faster, a whole one or one that has been crushed up.
5. Step 1 Fill both beakers about half full with water of the same
temperature.
6. Step 2 Wrap paper around one antacid tablet. Place the packet on a
hard surface and crush the tablet by pressing on it with the
wood block.
7. Step 3 Open the paper packet with the crushed tablet and hold it over
one of the beakers. Pour the powder in the water and time how
long it takes for the powder to dissolve.
Record the time on your lab sheet.
8. Step 4 Pick up a whole tablet and drop it into the second beaker of
water. Time how long it takes to dissolve completely.
Record the time on your lab sheet.
9. Step 5 As a group answer the conclusion questions.
