Nuclear reactors are designed to generate electricity through nuclear fission. The core holds nuclear fuel rods and control rods, and uses coolant to generate steam that turns turbines to produce electricity. When uranium-239 is split in the active reactor zone, it produces plutonium-239 through a fission reaction harness by Einstein's equation relating mass and energy. Cooling towers then cool the steam for recycling in the process.
