It’s that time of year again when we begin preparing for the Database Roadshow. This year’s Roadshow is all about change. Attend this NCompass session if you’d like an overview of some of the changes we’ll be talking about during the Roadshow. We’ll also toss out a few database tips and tricks along the way. Database Roadshow This year’s 12th annual Database Roadshow is all about change. Since the 2008 Roadshows there have been a number of enhancements and upgrades to both the NebraskAccess website and the databases. Instead of focusing on a subset of the databases like we have the past two years, we are going to talk about changes and enhancements affecting many of our subscription services.

This online training course was originally developed for Santa Clara County Library District (SCCLD) reference staff. It is available to all Nebraska librarians who would like to improve their reference strategies and knowledge of financial literacy concepts and resources. As a result of taking this course, you will be introduced to many useful web resources and will be directed to readings that will cover language, definitions, and concepts in a variety of financial areas, including: •Personal financial planning and budgeting •Banking and banking products •Basics of investment •Investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds •Evaluating stocks using company and industry information •Mortgages, short sales, first-time home buying, and real estate as an investment •Retirement accounts, including IRAs and 401(k)s To supplement the information found in the Santa Clara curriculum, the Nebraska Library Commission has prepared a few helpful documents directing you to links to Nebraska-related sites and agencies. This online curriculum is being offered as part of the Nebraska Library Commission and Northeast Library System’s "Smart Investing @ your library® Builds Nebraska Communities" project funded by a $100,000 FINRA Investor Education Foundation grant. Although the 23 public libraries participating in that project will benefit by receiving Financial Literacy Resource Kits and receiving customer financial literacy training in their libraries later this year, all of Nebraska’s public libraries are welcome to participate in the Santa Clara librarian online training. Starting this summer, all Nebraska libraries will also be invited to direct your customers to participate in the 4-week online Smart Investing @your Library® Training, written by Iowa State University Extension and available through the Nebraska Library Commission’s NCampus.

When we started at the South Sioux City Public Library two years ago the library was having difficult times. Circulation and attendance numbers were down. The public’s opinion of the library was not positive. In two years’ time period we have seen an increase of circulation from 21000 items to over 40000 items. We have seen attendance numbers for youth climb from 2000 to 6000 and adult attendance has gone from 800 participants to over 3000 participants. NCompass Live - April 22, 2015 http://nlc.nebraska.gov/ncompasslive/ In 2015 the hottest accessory for young and old is wearable technology and e-textiles. Wearable technology refers to devices that can be worn by users, taking the form of an accessory such as jewelry, sunglasses, a backpack, or even actual items of clothing like shoes or a jacket. A benefit of wearable technology is that it can conveniently integrate tools, devices, power needs, and connectivity within a user’s everyday life and movements. This NCompass Live focuses on "wearable tech" projects and e-textile projects for youth in your library. Dagen Valentine, Graduate Assistant from Nebraska 4-H will be presenting wearable/e-textiles tech youth project ideas for libraries. He's selected a fiction and a non-fiction book for each of these age-groups, grades K-5, middle school and high school. He'll suggest wearable tech projects that can be done with each book. Dagen will share information on where to purchase the hardware for the wearable tech projects he highlights in today’s webinar.

Updated and revised on February 10, 2015, to include changes from the Second Modernization Report and Order (December 11, 2014) and clarifications made by the FCC and USAC. Original description: Big changes are coming to E-rate, the federal program that provides discounts to assist schools and public libraries in the United States to obtain affordable Internet access and Connections. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted the E-rate Modernization Order on July 11, 2014. The Order takes major steps to modernize and streamline the E-rate program and focuses on expanding funding for Broadband and WiFi Internet Access. In part to accomplish this, funding for Voice Services (telephone) will be gradually phased out. What does your library need to know to prepare for these changes? In this workshop, Christa Burns, Nebraska’s State E-rate Coordinator for Libraries, will cover the basics of E-rate and explain the changes that will be made to the program for Funding Year 2015 and beyond.

In 2011, the NLC awarded grants to several librarians to attend the Public Library Association Conference in Philadelphia. NCompass Live - 11/2/16 http://nlc.nebraska.gov/ncompasslive/ The Nebraska Library Commission will make up to $25,000 available to accredited Nebraska public libraries for internships through the 2017 Nebraska Library Internship Grant Program. The 2017 grant process mirrors the 2016 Internship Grant Program. The program works to introduce high school and college students to the varied and exciting work of Nebraska Libraries. The internships are intended to function as a recruitment tool in helping the student to view the library as a viable career opportunity while providing the public library with the finances (up to $1,000 per library or branch) to provide stipends to the student(s). In the past student interns helped libraries expand programs, complete projects, improve websites, teach classes, expand social media use, while bringing in fresh ideas to the library. Grant applications will be accepted electronically between October 21 and December 21, 2016. In this session, supervisors from select 2016 participating libraries will share their experiences from earlier this year--including successes and lessons learned. Also hear from a past grant-funded intern (who is now a full-time library employee) to learn about the opportunity from their perspective. This session will also introduce the upcoming 2017 grant opportunity for internships, offered by the Nebraska Library Commission in partnership with Nebraska’s Regional Library Systems and supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Nebraska Library Commission. The web is now firmly established as the primary communication and publication platform for sharing and accessing social and cultural materials. This networked world has created both opportunities and pitfalls for libraries and archives in their mission to preserve and provide ongoing access to knowledge. How can the affordances of the web be leveraged to drastically extend the plurality of representation in the archive? What challenges are imposed by the intrinsic ephemerality and mutability of online information? What methodological reorientations are demanded by the scale and dynamism of machine-generated cultural artifacts? This talk will explore the interplay of the web, contemporary historical records, and the programs, technologies, and approaches by which libraries and archives are working to extend their mission to preserve and provide access to the evidence of human activity in a world distinguished by the ubiquity of born-digital materials. Information Science Brown Bag talks, hosted by the Program on Information Science, consists of regular discussions and brainstorming sessions on all aspects of information science and uses of information science and technology to assess and solve institutional, social and research problems. These are informal talks. Discussions are often inspired by real-world problems being faced by the lead discussant.

The concept of a "library without walls" has evolved over the last 100 years. Are there any walls left for 21st century libraries to consider? One answer to this question is that the remaining walls are virtual, political, and economic rather than physical. These invisible walls segregate library content from other content available on the Internet and create various barriers that restrict access to library resources. The new discovery catalog at the joint academic/public library in San Jose is an attempt to break through some of these walls in a complex political and economic environment. John Wenzler is the Associate Dean of Digital Futures, Technical Services, and Information Technology at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library of San Jose State University. John oversees the development of a growing suite of digital resources and services available from the SJSU Library. Because the King Library is a joint academic/public library, he also works collaboratively with the management of the San Jose Public Library to establish strategic goals and priorities. Before moving to SJSU, John was the Electronic Resources Coordinator at San Francisco State University and has worked as a Systems Librarian at Innovative Interfaces.

Web data management has been a topic of interest for many years during which a number of different modelling approaches have been tried. The latest in this approaches is to use RDF (Resource Description Framework), which seems to provide real opportunity for querying at least some of the web data systematically. RDF has been proposed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for modeling Web objects as part of developing the “semantic web”. W3C has also proposed SPARQL as the query language for accessing RDF data repositories. The publication of Linked Open Data (LOD) on the Web has gained tremendous momentum over the last number of years, and this provides a new opportunity to accomplish web data integration. A number of approaches have been proposed for running SPARQL queries over RDFencoded Web data: data warehousing, SPARQL federation, and live linked query execution. In this talk, I will review these approaches with particular emphasis on some of our research within the context of gStore project (joint project with Prof. Lei Zou of Peking University and Prof. Lei Chen of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), chameleondb project (joint work with Günes Aluç, Dr. Olaf Hartig, and Prof. Khuzaima Daudjee of University of Waterloo), and live linked query execution (joint work with Dr. Olaf Hartig).

Over the last two decades libraries joined thousands of other organizations in a massive rush to claim "new lands" on the Web . Yet at the end of the first decade of the new century, libraries may have network space but insufficient network attention (“eyes”). This talk introduces the notion of the “emergent library”--attracting more attention for library analog, licensed, and digital collections ; moving to cloud-based services; effectively deploying physical and virtual space; and playing a stronger role in the support of scholarly communications, especially through repositories.

In addition, ConnectEd Nebraska is piloting innovative collaborations between school districts and local ISPs to expand access to eduroam in unique ways that go beyond traditional anchor institutions, reducing barriers to broadband access and enhancing educational opportunities. She's written three books about social media and content marketing, specifically for libraries, and speaks nationally on both these and technology-related topics. As a former children's librarian, she enjoys bringing the "fun of technology" to audiences and in giving libraries the tools they need to better serve the virtual customer.
