2. January 31, 1915 – December 10, 1968. Anglo-American Catholic writer. Merton wrote more than 70 books. Spiritual, social justice and a quiet pacifism
3. Mission. Members of The Thomas Merton Center strive to develop a spirituality based on Jesus Christ's message of love, compassion and forgiveness and to live his message in today's world. The TMC community seeks to attract those who are on a quest for a deeper spiritual life and invite them to share in this vision.
4. Thomas MertonCenter. It is peace and social justice center, is an organization concerned with issues such as social justice, poverty, workers' rights, racial discrimination, ecology and peace.
5. The beginning. TMC began as part of the movement to end the Vietnam War, working against federal cutbacks and raising money for medical aid to Indochina.
6. During the 1980s The Center worked extensively on nuclear disarmament, targeting local weapons makers. As well as organizing campaigns of solidarity and support to the people of Central and Latin American countries that were targeted by the Reagan administration
7. With the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the Center became central in organizing Pittsburgh's large anti-war protests and most recently served to facilitate and organize many of the educational and protest activities.
