“Bebidas azucaradas, para bajar la obesidad”
In this document I will describe the arguments from the text “Bebidas azucaradas, para bajar la
obesidad”. Identify consistencies or inconsistencies in the arguments. Detected omissions,
fallacies, false inferences, and deceptive statistics. Critically analyze the causes of obesity
indicated in the text. And finally present a personal conclusion about the content of the decree.
1 What are the arguments of the DOF article?
There are high percentages of obesity in Mexico.
The more you consume sugar-based beverages, the more calories you’re
consuming, and therefore, gaining weight.
2 Which consistencies or inconsistencies did you find in the document?
Consistencies:
Take measures to better control obesity in Mexico.
Making laws that contribute to this objective.
Inconsistencies:
Trying to control obesity in Mexico through taxes.
3 Which biases or errors did you find in the arguments (bad arguments, fallacies,
omissions, false inferences, and deceptive statistics?
Deceptive statistics: It says many Mexicans have obesity but doesn’t state the data.
Fallacy and false inference: “The high consumption of sugar-added beverages
contributes notoriously to excess energy intake and is an important factor in the
development of overweight and obesity in Mexico”. Doesn’t show proof.
4 Can conclusions be drawn from the arguments?
The text just gives data and expects you to make your own conclusion about how
charging more will help the country. But it doesn’t explain how, there is no actual study
that indicates that their plan will work how they want it to. It just seems like an excuse
to make more money of taxes and trying to look good while they do it.
5 Is the person’s point of view derived from his or her research?
2. There is no clear conclusion from the author, but from what we have analyzed above,
some of their inferences might be more personal conclusions than facts.
6 How are you ordering your own arguments (to avoid being unfocused)?
The sicknesses related to high caloric intake by people can result in a larger cost for the
health sector.
The increase in prices in beverages doesn’t guarantee this will help, there are no
concrete studies. Also, there are a lot of together foods that greatly impact this problem.
This problematic is very subjective. It affects everybody differently, so a higher tax for
everyone is not helping as much as they think.
The answer is education about nutrition. If people were better informed about what they
are eating and how it affects their body would be a better solution.
