1. STAY AHEAD
We believe information, knowledge sharing and
networking are irreplaceable catalysts for
transformation and growth and part of our
fundamental mission at WAN-IFRA. The more we know,
the better we are prepared for tough decisions and
turbulent times.
We also believe that information, even the most critical
and strategic business news, has only limited value if
not brought into perspective. This is particularly so
given the world is undergoing such deep reshuffling.
To build the future, we cannot be tied to the present
day and current technology. The growth in computing
power and the exponential inclusion of digital in our
daily lives outstrips our ability to reframe our ethical
and legal approach to digital decision making. No
technology is immune from ethical and regulatory
questions. This is why WAN-IFRA brings you a healthy
perspective on the many collective challenges facing
our industry, with particular focus on press freedom,
general interest media policy, and critical global
Internet governance issues.

Who We Are
WAN-IFRA is the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers. It
derives its authority from its global network of leading news publishing
companies and technology entrepreneurs, and its legitimacy from its 80
member publisher associations representing 18,000 publications in 120
countries.
Founded in 1948, WAN-IFRA has always been committed to:
• Fostering international business cooperation among publishers and
business partners,
• Sharing best practices in both business and technology,
• Working as a representative trade body to elaborate and advance quality
and technical standards in the production workflow and business value chain
• Engaging with public authorities, institutions, and other trade bodies to
promote press freedom and advocate for the independence and self
regulation of the industry.
Today, WAN-IFRA is a leading global resource for publishers, editors, chief
technology officers, digital business executives, news publisher associations,
technology suppliers, service providers and research centres with three focus
areas : innovation and business development - regulation and global media
policy - press freedom.
Our mission is to defend and promote press freedom, and help independent
news publishing companies to succeed in their transformation process,
increase their business, and perform their crucial role in open societies.
We operate two international headquarters based in Paris and Frankfurt, with
regional offices in Singapore, Chennai, and Mexico City, with a staff of 50.
WAN-IFRA is a not for profit organisation funded by membership fees (25%),

What We Do
WAN-IFRA is the world’s largest trade organisation for news publishers and the
leading provider of real time business and strategic intelligence services to
newspapers, and news publishers around the globe.
The exponential growth and adoption of consumer technologies drives new

their businesses rapidly. WAN-IFRA supports this transformation by delivering

who attend our events organised in Europe, the Middle East, the Americas,
South Asia, and Asia Pacific;
4. Advocate for press freedom, major global media policy issues that impact
the independence of the press, and promote common principles and
important values that contribute to an inclusive, multi stakeholder,

respected. The organisation fights and campaigns to abolish 'Insult Laws' and
Criminal Defamation in Africa, to protect copyright on-line, to maintain open
coverage of newsworthy events, to promote gender balance in the news
industry, and to help newspaper companies go “green”.

Our mission is to equip our audiences with the intelligence to
understand a world shaped by new technologies, business models
and policy frameworks. Every day, we provide a lucid, authoritative
filter to the overwhelming flood of information about media. With
our news analysis, reports, webinars, and reviews we invite our
readers to get to know leading experts and their opinions to
explore and understand new business models, technology, user
behaviors, and their impact.
“No man is an island. No one stand alone”. We celebrate
excellence around the globe and encourage community
engagement by providing the right platforms in the right place for
the right people. WAN-IFRA organises an average of 50 events
per year, from closed door workshops to specific interest seminars
or large global events. More than 4,000 individual media
executives join our events annually at local, regional, or global
level. Over the past two years, the audience for our blogs has
increased year on year by 42% in terms of monthly unique visitors.
WAN-IFRA advocates and campaigns for press freedom
worldwide, bringing you a healthy perspective on the many
collective challenges facing our industry. Promoting the safety of
journalists is a prime focus area, along with actively campaigning
to end the impunity for those who attack and kill media
professionals. Speaking out on behalf of jailed colleagues,
addressing legislative barriers, and denouncing the many online
challenges is part of our daily mission. More than ever, technical
concerns are becoming political and civic challenges that give our
whole project its fundamental meaning. No technology is immune
from ethical and regulatory questions, and our global policy
advocacy work focuses particularly on the critical global Internet
governance issues that impact the independence of the press and
shape the foundations of our digital society.
We facilitate the creation of platforms for tomorrow’s needs,
improving the way news content and advertising is created,
configured, serviced and consumed. WAN-IFRA Consulting
provides independent guidance on transforming the news media
business by growing digital audiences and revenues. Our advisory
team counts 17 international experts and thought leaders who
serve your needs from workflow to strategy. For those who want to
move beyond the daily innovation comfort zone, WAN-IFRA’s
Global Alliance for Media Innovation (GAMI) connects you with the
first and only global network of media labs. Our innovation brain
trust forms a unique resource centre that will help you shaping your
long term innovation strategy.

funded and supported by
individual membership, support
from public agencies (Sida in
Sweden, Norwegian and Danish
Ministries of Foreign Affairs,
UNESCO,…), and private
foundations (Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation, Knight
Foundation, Open Society

skills, capacity and networks of media
and their institutions in a local,
regional and international context.
Development actions include
capacity building initiatives such as
skills development training, coaching,
mentoring, networking and skills-

engages in both advocacy and
development in parallel.
This dual approach of applying
advocacy and development is
designed to treat the media
ecosystem in its entirety, from content
to capacity building, organisational
structure to legal and regulatory
frameworks and the media’s overall
position in society. It allows WAN-
IFRA to address challenges to media
freedom from multiple perspectives,
leveraging experiences and synergies
between advocacy and development
projects, partnerships and the wider
expertise of WAN-IFRA’s international
community to encourage meaningful
change within societies.
Our 2015-2017 Media Freedom
Programme aims to assist meaningful
change in more than 25 countries
across the Middle East and North
Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and South
East Asia, as well as certain hotspots
in Europe and Latin America. Within
each of the selected intervention
countries, there is significant potential
for democratic growth to take hold
and flourish. WAN-IFRA believes that
media is at the heart of unlocking and
supporting this potential within any
society.
Our works aims to:
1. Improve citizen empowerment
and engagement through
broader access to independent
media on and offline;
2. Better protect media against
political, economic, and legal
pressures, as well as physical
harm;
3. Empower media with greater
potential to bring about positive
social change (poverty reduction,
equality and human rights);
4. Ensure gender equality in media;
5. Provide more tools for citizens to
advocate on behalf of media
freedom and democracy.

WAN-IFRA endorsement No Yes
By comparing the efficiency of our workflow with that of other newsrooms,
WAN-IFRA has convinced our reporters that the editorial logic of digital writing is
not out of reach. Before, the editorial team was distracted with a constant flow of
technological advances. WAN-IFRA’s training helped us refocus on good digital
journalism practices. That brought immediate positive impact on user
engagement.

Focus on World Press Trends
Disrupted, Diversified and Digital
A profound shift in the newspaper business model,
which has been evolving for years, is finally here.
Global newspaper circulation revenues are higher
than advertising revenues for the first time in the
century. Audiences have become publishers’
biggest source of revenue. The industry generated
an estimated US$ 179 billion in circulation and
revenue in 2014. Ninety-two billion dollars came
from print and digital circulation, while $ 86 billion
came from advertising.
With 2.8 million jobs, magazines and newspapers
represent together the third global creative industry
before book publishing, music or film industries. In
2015, it is clear that the story of the newspaper
industry is not one of doom and gloom and decline.
Newspapers around the world are proving their
value and resilience in the face of massive
competition. They are discovering new markets and
new business models that are today as pertinent to
news production as advertising and circulation
revenues. From print newspaper businesses, they
have transformed themselves into true multi
platform news media businesses, aiming for
revenues that are increasingly diversified and digital.
At the same time, for the majority of newspapers
around the world, print will continue to be a major
source of revenue for years to come.
