Essay on Human Impact on the Environment
Human Impact on the Environment
About three hundred years ago there was a definite spurt in the population of the human race.
This was brought about with advancements in sanitation and technology, as well as a dramatic
fall in the death rate. By around 1850 the world's population had grown to about 1 billion and by
1930 it had risen to 2 billion. The current figure is around 6 billion and at this rate the United
Nations estimates the population will be at about 9 billion by 2054. This would be a 900% increase
in just 200 years.
This increase in population has meant that the world's resources have been put under a great strain in
order to sustain the human race. But it has only been in recent...show more content...
The culture of many forest–peoples has been destroyed and deforestation also affects the livelihoods
of between 200 and 500 million people, who depend on the rainforest for their shelter and food.
Deforestation may also lead to global climate imbalances. There is also a major problem when it
comes to carbon storage. With the removal of the trees excessive carbon dioxide levels in the
environment may lead to global warming, with many problematic side effects. While deforestation is
now viewed as problem, historically it was considered to assist natural development and so now
some countries rely on the rainforest for income and the problem will continue whilst they have no
alternative.
Another problem caused by humans is as a result of the increase in demand for extensive farming
throughout the world. In order for crops to be grown trees have to be cut down and I have
explained the effects of this already. As well as deforestation, agriculture has also called for the use
of fertilisers and pesticides. Fertilisers (and raw sewage) cause eutrophication. Eutrophication occurs
when farmers are forced to increase the productivity of their crops and so use fertilisers. These
fertilisers run off the land into the waterways and increase the levels of nitrates and phosphates in the
water. In turn this increases

How does society impact the environment?
According to Webster dictionary, the word environment can be defined as "a : the complex of
physical, chemical, and biotic factors (such as climate, soil, and living things) that act upon an
organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival b : the
aggregate of social and cultural conditions that influence the life of an individual or community"
(Merriam–Webster). Environmental risks are actual and or potential threat of adverse effects on
living organisms and environment by effluents, emissions, wastes, resource depletion, etc., arising
out of an organization's activities.
Society impacts the environment greatly. Society has generated the climate change that we are
facing today. People hurt the environment and take it for granted most times. People only listen to
the earth when it is screaming; I admire this sentiment because this could be applied to the natural
disasters occurring in the past few months. Society only seems to listen to the earth when it is in
trouble. Society only cares about the environment when they see it reacting. Humans do not take the
right precautions when dealing with the environment. Every social group has some sort of impact on
the environment. There are many ways society can impact the environment such as; water, pollution,
forests, and fossil fuels. In the same way, society impacts the environment, it works

Speech on Environmental Issues Today Essay
Our Environment – how can you and I help save it?
Albert Einstein said "Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better." Our
planet is in trouble! Pretty much everywhere you look today you will hear or see something
reminding you that our planet's health is failing. If our planet where a person it would be about time
to buy the burial plot and write out the last will and testament. Just a brief list of the things that is
ailing her is – pollution, acid rain, climate change, the destruction of rainforests and other wild
habitats, the decline and extinction of thousands of species of animals and plants....and so on.
I think everyone in here can agree that all of these issues exist and that humans have caused them.

Much of our waste is made up of glass, metal, plastic and paper. Our natural resources such as trees,
oil, coal and aluminum are used up in enormous amounts to make these products and the resources
will one day be completely used up. So in order to cut down on the energy used lets reuse.
What can you do?
* Sort out your trash. Organic matter (e.g. potato peelings, left over food, tea leaves etc.) can be put
in to a compost heap in the garden and used as a good, natural fertilizer for the plants.
*Aluminum cans, glass bottles and newspapers are often collected from our doorsteps, but other
items such as plastic bottles, juice cartons and cardboard may not be, in which case they can be
taken to nearby recycling banks. You can find out where they are by just searching on line. * Use
recycled paper to help save trees. Chlorine bleach is usually used to make newspapers and this
pollutes rivers. It's better to use unbleached, recycled paper whenever you can. * Take your old
clothes to charity shops. Some are sold, others are returned to textile mills for recycling. * Try to
avoid buying plastic. It's hard to recycle. One way to cut down on plastic is to refuse to use plastic
bags offered by supermarkets and use cloth re–useable shopping bags instead, or re–use plastic bags
over and over again, until they wear out and then recycle them.

Environmental Science Reflection
Over the course of the semester, I feel that, in my Introduction to Environmental Science (EVR2001)
class, I have learned an extensive amount about current, past, and possibly future environmental
issues that our planet is enduring. Many of the issues impacting our environment have caught my
attention and opened my eyes to the effects these issues are causing. Environmental science has had
an impact on me personally, and has changed my understanding and the intensity of my opinions on
many environmental issues in a variety of ways. There are even particular environmental issues that
I find relevant to my own life for many reasons. This class taught me how I can reduce my own
impact on the environment, which has even led me to change some aspects of my life to reduce my
environmental impact as a result. EVR2001 has impacted me personally, in many different ways
First, this class has brought so many issues to my attention, and taught me that almost anything can
have a negative impact on our environment. For example, I found it intriguing that even letting a
pet cat, or feral cats in general, outside, is a severe negative threat to the biodiversity of an
ecosystem (Lecture 4 Slides). Personally, I do not believe many people know the effect cats can
have, which leads them to believe their cat is fine roaming around outside. The Global Article
Analysis assignments had another impact on me. They allowed me to realize that countries can be
affected differently by the same

Smog, contaminated water, melting of snow packs. These are some of impacts that Climate
Change has had on the Earth over the past years. All of these are product of the increase in carbon
dioxide emissions by humans and their polluting activities. Since the Industrial Revolution, these
events have escalated and, they have been becoming more noticeable and prolonged across the
globe. Some of these events are more palpable and pronounced in certain parts of the hemisphere.
For example, it is more common for a developing city to experience inferior conditions of air quality
than a rural town. Since the effects of Climate Change are perceived differently around the world, its
concrete consequences on the environment and on the living organisms around us are a challenge to
identify and understand. However, since the interest on Climate Change and its effects on the
environment has increased, more research and founding has been put in place in order to expand the
knowledge and information on this topic. This increase in interest has led scientists to find other
consequences that this phenomenon is beginning to cause. A number of these are more serious than
others, but in conjunction these are dangerous to the ecosystems around us. One of these
consequences of Climate Change is the acidification of the oceans. This event, which has been
becoming more and more apparent in the last decades, is one of the many as of yet unknown
impacts of Climate Change on earth.

Importance Of Environment Essay
The environment plays a significant role in life. It is an essential part of our life. A clean
environment is very necessary to live a peaceful and healthy life. An environment is the natural
surroundings which help life to grow and nourish on this earth. It helps human beings, animals and
other living things to grow and develop naturally. But now days, our everyday actions and decisions
are negatively impacting the environment, causing pollution, deforestation, overfishing. We are
disturbing our environment in many ways which affecting not only the environment but all living

All across the world, people are facing challenging environmental problems every day. Global
warming is the biggest problem that our planet is facing right now. It is one of the most current
and widely discussed problem. In short, global warming represents a fundamental threat to all
living things on earth.Climate changes like global warming is the result of human practices like
emission of greenhouse gases. Global warming leads to rising temperatures of the oceans and the
earth surface causing melting of polar ice caps, rise in sea levels and also lead to natural disaster
such as flash floods and desertification. A decade ago, global warming was not much of a concern
as it is now. No matter how much we are informed about it , we as a society seem to ignore the
future disasters that global warming will acquire. Global warming is a "global" dilemma and
everyone has an obligation to help reduce emissions. Human influence has always been a very
serious issue to Global warming. We as human are not taking care of the earth. Human influence to
this global warming is more than the natural causes .The earth has been changing for many years
until now it is still changing because of modern lifestyle of human. Human activities include

Introduction
Environmental science is defined as the study of the environment and the interconnecting systems it
contains, furthermore, the way people interact with their natural surroundings and use natural
resources (wise geek, 2013). Scientist in this field is highly interdisciplinary and extremely diverse,
for example, a scientist might study volcanoes or climate change. This essay will cover the
following; the definition of environmental science, the relationship between science and technology
and how it affects environmental problems; the concept of environmental sustainability and why it
should be studied; how human...show more content...
Environmental Sustainability
Environmental sustainability is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the
environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible
based on ideal–seeking behavior (Wikipedia, 2010). What makes environmental sustainability so
important is that it demands that society designs activities to meet human needs while indefinitely
preserving the life support systems of the planet (Wikipedia, 2010). Human consumption can only
use the nature's resources at a rate that can be replenished naturally.
Human Values affecting Society
The most devastating environmental change of all is the loss of biodiversity. The rate of species
extinction has remained at one species per million per year, furthermore, the accelerating destruction
of habitats throughout the world leads to projections of the loss of two–thirds of all species on earth
by the end of this century, and millions of years to recover from the Cretaceous period
(mindfully.org, 2013). As individuals, we obtain our food, directly or indirectly from plants, for
example, plant our primary use of medicines. Biodiversity also determines the properties of
communities and ecosystems, which capture energy from the sun. The world is less resilient, more
homogeneous, less interesting, and with fewer opportunities for our descendants and ourselves:
where the process reaches

Environmental Impact Of Personal Lifestyle Essay
Environmental Impact of Personal Lifestyle: Behavior # 1 A major lifestyle behavior of mine
that effects the environment is the over usage of water. Water waste is a problem for many
people in their households. We can start conserving in our homes which most of our water is
wasted daily and we do not pay attention to it. Water is used for daily activities such as taking a
shower, brushing teeth, washing the dishes, etc. My personal problem is over usage in the
shower, I like to take at least a 30 minute shower. Another major problem is when I let the water
run when I am brushing my teeth. Environmental Impact of Personal Lifestyle: Behavior # 2 For
many years I have contributed to biodegradables that end up in landfill sites. I have been
continuously purchasing water bottles my whole life. Plastic is used almost everywhere, I have
been using plastic bags when I go grocery shopping and I have never tried to get reusable bags.
Environmental Impact of Personal Lifestyle: Behavior # 3 Commuting is also one of the many
problems that contribute to environmental pollution. Every day I commute to work and school, I
add more greenhouse gases into the environment. Air pollution is a major problem and cars are a
big cause of it. My commute is not that far it is about 20 miles from Glendale to Northridge, but this
accumulates over time and can be harmful for our air quality. Long–Term Environmental
Consequences: Behavior # 1 There are many proven disadvantages by wasting water.

Environmental health is the science that studies how the environment influences the human disease
and health. Environment means things that are natural to us in the environment, for instance air,
water, and soil. However, it also covers the physical, chemical, biological, and social features that
surround us every day. The physical environment is the man–made or built structures that include our
living, work, and even schools. Included in the community systems such as the roads and our
transportations, and waste management. However, the alterations such as air pollution to our natural
environment, is included in the physical section. The social environment is our social lifestyles like

The pollution has both chronic and acute effects on our health, and affects many of our systems and
organs. The health consequences of lower levels of pollution have been more difficult to decide. The
first cause is that people differ in response to the environment and the toxics. When we are exposed
to the different conditions caused by the environment, the variation is wide because of how we react.
With this variability of the population, it can mask the effects that do occur in a sensitive segment of
the population. The second difficulty is our age, and the timing of the exposures and how it will
influence both sensitivity to the environmental agent, and the type of effect it will cause our health.
Infants and children may acquire lifelong damage compared to us adults. Environmental regulation
and pollution control will remain an important cornerstone of the public health policy. The focus will
be prevention, instead of disease treatment. Control of the pollution is a highly cost–effective means
ensuring public health. With the contaminated environments and the work hazards in occupations,
improving the pollution control may lead to a reduced health care disparities. When the health of all
citizens is protected that a nation can fulfill its potential. Another reason we could consider is the
climate change. The climate poses a challenge to our health. Threats to our health caused by a toxin
or disease pathogen, there are ways the

Persuasive Essay On The Environment
Ian Somerhalder once said, "The environment is in us, not outside of us. The trees are our lungs;
the rivers, our bloodstream. We are all interconnected, and what you do to the environment,
ultimately you do to yourself (SC 2)." I have noticed in my everyday life how unaware my friends
and family are when it involves the environment. I often hear, "Just throw it away" or "Throw it in
the ditch" when I am out in public. Disappointed and sad, I became an advocate for the
environment (BE 1). If I was able to change the world by myself, I would change the pollution
issues of land, water, and air. The land pollution has become a growing issue for years with landfills
being the leading factor. In 2006, Americans generated 251 million tons of trash with at least three
locations to go: fifty–five percent to landfills, thirty–three percent to recycling, and twelve and a half
percent to incinerators (SC 7) (Kulpinski). Daily, one person would generate 4.6 pounds of garbage
(BE 3). Many Americans do not think of the build–up from trash when they take out the garbage
once a week. When a landfill site develops, there is an impact on biodiversity. About thirty to three
hundred species are lost according to the Romanian Ministry of Environment and Forests when
landfills are introduced to a new environment. Along with biodiversity, soil and groundwater are
affected. Soil fertility decreases because of the mixture of toxic substance and decaying organic
material. Groundwater can contain high levels of toxic metals, ammonia, toxic organic compounds,
pathogens (SC 4) (Newton). Along with land pollution, the human race pollutes water and air.
According to Jacques Cousteau, water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends,
have become one thing – a global garbage can (SC 8).
Since I was young, I have had a special place in my heart for bodies of water, especially the ocean,
because of countless family vacations (BE 2). It is estimated that almost 8 million metric tons of
plastic end up in the oceans every year (Sifferlin). This has caused for animals such as turtles and
dolphins, fish and sharks, crabs and seabirds to be the victims of plastic debris (SC 6) (Cause and
Effects). To put the issue into scale, it

The Impact of Buildings on the Environment
In the last few decades, sustainability in design and innovation in construction methods have become
increasingly important as both environmental activists and architects alike have realized the impact
that buildings have on the environment. We live in an age where ourgroundwater is becoming more
polluted; the earth's temperature continues rising due to ozone depletion and acid rain drips down
upon us. The key source of all of these problems lies in our continually increasing use of
non–renewable energy resources. Most of our electricity is created from fossil fuels and burning
coal, and the emissions from these power plants are deadly to our environment in the long run. While

In addition to the energy use in such buildings, the process of obtaining the raw materials used in
construction and their processing can be detrimental to the environment. Quarrying for rock as well
as mining for iron ore to be used in construction can disrupt the local wildlife and processing of can
pollute our waterways, oceans and the air we breathe. In the United States alone, the annual total of
construction and demolition waste is between 125–130 million tons. The vast majority of this waste
ends up in landfills with no chance of reuse or recycling. Often, heavy metals end up in river and
stream beds.
The depletion of resources through the initial cultivation of raw materials is another major problem
facing the world and the area of building construction. In the last 100 years the world's forests have
been reduced by approximately 30%, and though efficiency of construction has increased, so has the
volume of such construction, thus outweighing the positive steps taken.
Considering the severity of the environmental impact of the excessive energy use, a trend towards
"the creation of responsible management of a healthy built environment based on resource efficient

Abstract On Environmental Pollution
Abstract
Environmental pollution is anything that can cause harm to the environment. Pollution is any
undesired alteration of the environment and is often caused by human activities (Mader, 2016, pg.
552). Types of human pollution would be air, water, soil, radioactive, thermal, noise, and light. Each
of these forms of pollution has been known to cause the enormous amount of concern for the
environment. There are laws in place now that are limiting pollution and to help control the issue.
Environmental pollution is a serious problem we are facing globally. It is the debate concerning
pollution, which we have been pondering for the past century. Prior to the industrial revolution,
scientists thought that the atmosphere was untouched by man–made pollutants until they found air
bubbles hidden in the core of Greenland's ice shelf (Stromberg). After finding this essential
development, scientist began to reconsider the initial cause of pollution and how to decrease the
lasting effects of it. With this discovery, pollution was traced back to Ancient Rome and it was
decided that globally we needed a new approach for dealing with this problem. There are numerous
types of pollution and they each have a devastating effect on the global climate. A scientist has been
working on ways to re–direct the negative effects of pollution and at the same time encourage
people to try to find ways to do that part to help with this effort. We all can find some way to
improve the world and decrease pollution.
The problems with air pollution seem to be one of the largest most discussed situations. The Natural
Resource Defense Council (NRDC) air pollution is the release of pollutants into the air that is
damaging human health and world. There are many forms of air pollution and smog and soot are
two of them. These two are discussed more when dissecting this problem due to them being the
most common forms of air position, which are also the most detrimental of them all. When the
sunlight and emissions from fossil fuels interact that is how smog is created. The creation of soot
formed from smoke, dust, allergens and other particles are spread throughout the air in gas or solid
form. Methane is also a huge component of the

Caring About Our Environment Essay
Caring About Our Environment
Improving and maintaining the earth's environment is becoming a more important task every day of
our lives. Due to ignorance and frequent carelessness, this important task is quickly becoming a
critical one. For this reason, I took it upon myself to construct a strategic plan to enlighten my peers
to the problems of our environment. I did this in hopes that it would encourage everyone to act
responsibly towards improving and maintaining the environment. With ongoing threats to the earth's
water supply, atmosphere, and surface, I found it necessary to devise a method of environmental
enlightenment. I plan to apply this method at my place of academic study, The University. If

I recently discovered that one cheeseburger takes more than 700 gallons of water to produce
(includes water consumed by cows, water used to irrigate the cornfields that feed the cows, and the
water used to produce the beef and cheese). When considering the millions of cheeseburgers that are
consumed worldwide everyday, it is evident that the earth's water supply is declining rapidly. Due to
air pollution, the ozone layer is also being consumed at an extreme rate. Its arch nemesis is the
various fumes from cars and factories. Scientists estimate that each 1% drop in ozone levels causes
a 3 to 6% rise in skin cancer cases. Since the ozone layer prevents most ultraviolet and other
high–energy radiation from penetrating to the earth's surface, this is a crisis that has to be rectified.
The ozone's depletion has dropped to a level so thin that if we brought it down to Earth, it would
only be as deep as the thickness of three dimes. The only positive outlook concerning this matter is
that the ozone has the ability to reconstruct itself when UV–C rays break the bond of O2. Single
oxygen atoms combine with O2 to form ozone (UV–B rays limit this process still yet). This evidence
shows that the world is in dire need of an environmental resurrection. In order for this to occur and
be successful, it would require an effort by every individual nation of our world.
My resolution requires that The University of South Carolina

Into the Future
This issue of making sure life paths don't negatively affect the environment is prevalent in
everyone 's life. The problem is in front of our eyes, but we aren 't making changes to solve it.
Carbon emissions is destroying our environment every single day. Most individuals wouldn't think
twice about their actions because the negative effects don 't interfere with their present life. Our
world is slowly deteriorating because of all the non–environmentally friendly actions we do, such as
driving inefficient cars, buy goods produced from unregulated factories, and so on. Carbon emissions
negatively impact the environment and the health of humans. It causes the global temperature to rise
which creates severe weather events, like heat waves or forest fires. Increase in temperature affects
many wildlife species, putting them in great amounts of stress potentially causing extinction. There
will be a potential increase of respiratory and cardiovascular problems in humans as well. I want to
do my part to prevent this problem from further happening. There are necessary steps for me to take
before I can make sure that my idea be possible. I would like to become an architect in the future, and
there are numerous issues that I will encounter trying to limit the amount of environmental damage
caused by my actions. I have certain choices that I can make to ensure that this doesn't happen.

Environmental Impact of Personal Lifestyle: Behavior # 1
My first lifestyle behavior that has an impact on the environment is the overuse of bottled water
and plastic bags. In our modern society using plastic bags and bottled water became a necessity
in our everyday life which is completely unnecessary. I, personally depend on stuff made of
plastic for my basic needs. I usually every time doing some shopping every time using new plastic
bags. Sometimes these bags gathered in my house that I just throw them into the trash. I use plastic
zippers to store food and other things. No doubt it is very convenient to cover the table with a
plastic cover sheet before dinner and just take and throw away without a second thought. It is cheap
and convenient, I don't have to spend a couple of minutes to clean it and reuse next time.
Unfortunately, the higher prices for our lazy life is paying our environment with global warming.
Bottled water consumption has attached to the issue of the overutilization of plastic to which I
was just addicted to. While I was drinking my 8 glasses water per day, I was wasting 8 plastic
bottles. During my cooking process where I used water from bottles assuming it is healthier than
the tap water, I was wasting minimum 5 bottles per meal. I used to cook every day and sometimes
twice a day. In this case, there are two issues in one that I was causing to the environment first

Environmental Pollution In The US Today
Earth, home to the beauty of blue skies and clear waters, and bearer of each delicate life form, from
the moss floating atop rivers, to the lions that prowl the mesa deserts; however, Earth is also home to
the most destructive life form, humans. People reap the fruit of the Earth and bask in the beauty of
nature, yet for generations, the efforts to protect the environment have only declined. The pollution
that is wrought upon the environment every day is too often ignored for "more important" issues,
such as poverty or crime; however, protecting the literal soil that people dwell on is just as vital as
patrolling the society in which they live. Environmental pollution is a growing issue in the U.S.
today, caused primarily by the lack of public concern or caution, harmful chemicals used by
manufacturers and farmers, and lack of government enforcement or intervention. To begin with, the
energy wasted out of pure negligence while performing daily tasks and activities wreaks havoc on
the environment, greatly contributing to this issue. Fortunately, more often than not, excessive
waste can easily be avoided altogether by being conscious of what is necessary, and what's just
luxury. However, the extra couple of seconds that it takes to flip off a light switch or turn down a
faucet often proves to be too inconvenient of a task for many individuals. By far, unnecessary use of
electricity is the biggest energy waster among the general population. While one may believe they

Positive Impacts of Humans Activity on Environment Above all, there are a lot of articles and books
that discover the negative impacts of humans' activity on environment. Undoubtedly, healthy food is
a very important thing for our future, especially in conditions of great pollution of the natural

activity. However, such methods of interference in the nature have made our food more dangerous
for our health. Now ecologically neutral production has become more popular in many countries.
Public transport is one of the main elements of social infrastructure that ensures the transport needs
of residents in urban, suburban and intercity environments. Reliable and efficient public
transportation for the city is an important indicator of socio–political and economic stability.
Automobile movement leads to excessive noise and air pollution. However, the main aim of the

one of the most important impacts of humans' activity on environment is introduction of plants from

Living sustainably isn 't always easy. It seems that every aspect of life can be looked at from a
sustainable perspective, and when trying to reduce your ecological footprint this can be very
overwhelming. Previously, I believed that our values must be redefined to live sustainably,
However, this series of lecture reflections made me realize that instead of changing our values to
live sustainably, we must apply our current values in a sustainable way! Elizabeth Mrema is an
environmental activist who uses her passion of law to help sustain the environment. Sharon Clark is
a principle at the office of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development
(CESD), and uses her background in political science to examine the government 's impact on the
environment. Finally, graduates of Dalhousie's Sustainability program explain where their degree in
sustainability has taken them. Through the stories of people who have applied sustainability to
things they are passionate about, I have realized that we do not have to change our values to be
sustainable. Sustainable living can be achieved when we combine our passions with sustainability.
Elizabeth Mrema is passionate about law, and has an expertise in environmental law. She explains
how environmental law has developed, and how governments must change the way they protect the

The Problem Of Food Waste In America
Problem As society expands, it is critical to seek ways to lessen humans' environmental impact. A
key aspect of practicing sustainability is efficiently using resources, and one of such resources is
food. In America alone, about 40% of food goes uneaten, and as the population increases, pressures
on managing this waste will only increase further (Buzby, et al. 499). With many Americans lacking
a secure supply of food, the need for an improved ability to manage food waste is essential.
Furthermore, food waste places a severe strain on the environment. In an article by Buzby, Hyman,
Stewart, and Wells, they state, "Food loss at the retail and consumer levels represents significant
amounts of money and other resources invested in food production, including land, fresh water,
labor, energy, agricultural chemicals (e.g., fertilizer, pesticides) and other inputs to produce food
that does not ultimately meet its intended purpose of feeding people" (Buzby, et al. 492). It is clear
that the problems with food waste are immense, ranging from environmental to economic. Food
waste across the country is a pressing issue, however, it is very large in scope. A narrower area with
great potential for improvement is college dining halls, specifically those at Rutgers University. In
Dr. Whitehair's article on improving university dining, she states "Food waste generated by
universities each year is estimated at nearly 540,000 million tons" (Whitehair 63). Rutgers

Essay On Enviroment

  • 1. Essay on Human Impact on the Environment Human Impact on the Environment About three hundred years ago there was a definite spurt in the population of the human race. This was brought about with advancements in sanitation and technology, as well as a dramatic fall in the death rate. By around 1850 the world's population had grown to about 1 billion and by 1930 it had risen to 2 billion. The current figure is around 6 billion and at this rate the United Nations estimates the population will be at about 9 billion by 2054. This would be a 900% increase in just 200 years. This increase in population has meant that the world's resources have been put under a great strain in order to sustain the human race. But it has only been in recent...show more content... The culture of many forest–peoples has been destroyed and deforestation also affects the livelihoods of between 200 and 500 million people, who depend on the rainforest for their shelter and food. Deforestation may also lead to global climate imbalances. There is also a major problem when it comes to carbon storage. With the removal of the trees excessive carbon dioxide levels in the environment may lead to global warming, with many problematic side effects. While deforestation is now viewed as problem, historically it was considered to assist natural development and so now some countries rely on the rainforest for income and the problem will continue whilst they have no alternative. Another problem caused by humans is as a result of the increase in demand for extensive farming throughout the world. In order for crops to be grown trees have to be cut down and I have explained the effects of this already. As well as deforestation, agriculture has also called for the use of fertilisers and pesticides. Fertilisers (and raw sewage) cause eutrophication. Eutrophication occurs when farmers are forced to increase the productivity of their crops and so use fertilisers. These fertilisers run off the land into the waterways and increase the levels of nitrates and phosphates in the water. In turn this increases Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Impact Of Society On The Environment Enisa Gutic GSCI 2050 Final How does society impact the environment? According to Webster dictionary, the word environment can be defined as "a : the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (such as climate, soil, and living things) that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival b : the aggregate of social and cultural conditions that influence the life of an individual or community" (Merriam–Webster). Environmental risks are actual and or potential threat of adverse effects on living organisms and environment by effluents, emissions, wastes, resource depletion, etc., arising out of an organization's activities. Society impacts the environment greatly. Society has generated the climate change that we are facing today. People hurt the environment and take it for granted most times. People only listen to the earth when it is screaming; I admire this sentiment because this could be applied to the natural disasters occurring in the past few months. Society only seems to listen to the earth when it is in trouble. Society only cares about the environment when they see it reacting. Humans do not take the right precautions when dealing with the environment. Every social group has some sort of impact on the environment. There are many ways society can impact the environment such as; water, pollution, forests, and fossil fuels. In the same way, society impacts the environment, it works Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Speech on Environmental Issues Today Essay Our Environment – how can you and I help save it? Albert Einstein said "Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better." Our planet is in trouble! Pretty much everywhere you look today you will hear or see something reminding you that our planet's health is failing. If our planet where a person it would be about time to buy the burial plot and write out the last will and testament. Just a brief list of the things that is ailing her is – pollution, acid rain, climate change, the destruction of rainforests and other wild habitats, the decline and extinction of thousands of species of animals and plants....and so on. I think everyone in here can agree that all of these issues exist and that humans have caused them. ...show more content... Much of our waste is made up of glass, metal, plastic and paper. Our natural resources such as trees, oil, coal and aluminum are used up in enormous amounts to make these products and the resources will one day be completely used up. So in order to cut down on the energy used lets reuse. What can you do? * Sort out your trash. Organic matter (e.g. potato peelings, left over food, tea leaves etc.) can be put in to a compost heap in the garden and used as a good, natural fertilizer for the plants. *Aluminum cans, glass bottles and newspapers are often collected from our doorsteps, but other items such as plastic bottles, juice cartons and cardboard may not be, in which case they can be taken to nearby recycling banks. You can find out where they are by just searching on line. * Use recycled paper to help save trees. Chlorine bleach is usually used to make newspapers and this pollutes rivers. It's better to use unbleached, recycled paper whenever you can. * Take your old clothes to charity shops. Some are sold, others are returned to textile mills for recycling. * Try to avoid buying plastic. It's hard to recycle. One way to cut down on plastic is to refuse to use plastic bags offered by supermarkets and use cloth re–useable shopping bags instead, or re–use plastic bags over and over again, until they wear out and then recycle them. • 4. Environmental Science Reflection Over the course of the semester, I feel that, in my Introduction to Environmental Science (EVR2001) class, I have learned an extensive amount about current, past, and possibly future environmental issues that our planet is enduring. Many of the issues impacting our environment have caught my attention and opened my eyes to the effects these issues are causing. Environmental science has had an impact on me personally, and has changed my understanding and the intensity of my opinions on many environmental issues in a variety of ways. There are even particular environmental issues that I find relevant to my own life for many reasons. This class taught me how I can reduce my own impact on the environment, which has even led me to change some aspects of my life to reduce my environmental impact as a result. EVR2001 has impacted me personally, in many different ways First, this class has brought so many issues to my attention, and taught me that almost anything can have a negative impact on our environment. For example, I found it intriguing that even letting a pet cat, or feral cats in general, outside, is a severe negative threat to the biodiversity of an ecosystem (Lecture 4 Slides). Personally, I do not believe many people know the effect cats can have, which leads them to believe their cat is fine roaming around outside. The Global Article Analysis assignments had another impact on me. They allowed me to realize that countries can be affected differently by the same Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. OCEAN ACIDIFICATION Smog, contaminated water, melting of snow packs. These are some of impacts that Climate Change has had on the Earth over the past years. All of these are product of the increase in carbon dioxide emissions by humans and their polluting activities. Since the Industrial Revolution, these events have escalated and, they have been becoming more noticeable and prolonged across the globe. Some of these events are more palpable and pronounced in certain parts of the hemisphere. For example, it is more common for a developing city to experience inferior conditions of air quality than a rural town. Since the effects of Climate Change are perceived differently around the world, its concrete consequences on the environment and on the living organisms around us are a challenge to identify and understand. However, since the interest on Climate Change and its effects on the environment has increased, more research and founding has been put in place in order to expand the knowledge and information on this topic. This increase in interest has led scientists to find other consequences that this phenomenon is beginning to cause. A number of these are more serious than others, but in conjunction these are dangerous to the ecosystems around us. One of these consequences of Climate Change is the acidification of the oceans. This event, which has been becoming more and more apparent in the last decades, is one of the many as of yet unknown impacts of Climate Change on earth. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

A clean environment is very necessary to live a peaceful and healthy life. An environment is the natural surroundings which help life to grow and nourish on this earth. It helps human beings, animals and other living things to grow and develop naturally. But now days, our everyday actions and decisions are negatively impacting the environment, causing pollution, deforestation, overfishing. We are disturbing our environment in many ways which affecting not only the environment but all living beings. Any type of disturbance in the nature's balance affects the environment totally which ruins the human lives. Ever since the first human beings, there has...show more content... All across the world, people are facing challenging environmental problems every day. Global warming is the biggest problem that our planet is facing right now. It is one of the most current and widely discussed problem. In short, global warming represents a fundamental threat to all living things on earth.Climate changes like global warming is the result of human practices like emission of greenhouse gases. Global warming leads to rising temperatures of the oceans and the earth surface causing melting of polar ice caps, rise in sea levels and also lead to natural disaster such as flash floods and desertification. A decade ago, global warming was not much of a concern as it is now. No matter how much we are informed about it , we as a society seem to ignore the future disasters that global warming will acquire. Global warming is a "global" dilemma and everyone has an obligation to help reduce emissions. Human influence has always been a very serious issue to Global warming. We as human are not taking care of the earth. Human influence to this global warming is more than the natural causes .The earth has been changing for many years until now it is still changing because of modern lifestyle of human. • 7. Environmental Science Essay Environmental Fundamentals Laura Jackson Env/100 April 8, 2013 JOHN ENSWORTH Environmental Fundamentals Introduction Environmental science is defined as the study of the environment and the interconnecting systems it contains, furthermore, the way people interact with their natural surroundings and use natural resources (wise geek, 2013). Scientist in this field is highly interdisciplinary and extremely diverse, for example, a scientist might study volcanoes or climate change. This essay will cover the following; the definition of environmental science, the relationship between science and technology and how it affects environmental problems; the concept of environmental sustainability and why it should be studied; how human...show more content... Environmental Sustainability Environmental sustainability is the process of making sure current processes of interaction with the environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the environment as pristine as naturally possible based on ideal–seeking behavior (Wikipedia, 2010). What makes environmental sustainability so important is that it demands that society designs activities to meet human needs while indefinitely preserving the life support systems of the planet (Wikipedia, 2010). Human consumption can only use the nature's resources at a rate that can be replenished naturally. Human Values affecting Society The most devastating environmental change of all is the loss of biodiversity. The rate of species extinction has remained at one species per million per year, furthermore, the accelerating destruction of habitats throughout the world leads to projections of the loss of two–thirds of all species on earth by the end of this century, and millions of years to recover from the Cretaceous period (mindfully.org, 2013). As individuals, we obtain our food, directly or indirectly from plants, for example, plant our primary use of medicines. Biodiversity also determines the properties of communities and ecosystems, which capture energy from the sun. The world is less resilient, more homogeneous, less interesting, and with fewer opportunities for our descendants and ourselves: where the process reaches Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Environmental Impact Of Personal Lifestyle Essay Environmental Impact of Personal Lifestyle: Behavior # 1 A major lifestyle behavior of mine that effects the environment is the over usage of water. Water waste is a problem for many people in their households. We can start conserving in our homes which most of our water is wasted daily and we do not pay attention to it. Water is used for daily activities such as taking a shower, brushing teeth, washing the dishes, etc. My personal problem is over usage in the shower, I like to take at least a 30 minute shower. Another major problem is when I let the water run when I am brushing my teeth. Environmental Impact of Personal Lifestyle: Behavior # 2 For many years I have contributed to biodegradables that end up in landfill sites. I have been continuously purchasing water bottles my whole life. Plastic is used almost everywhere, I have been using plastic bags when I go grocery shopping and I have never tried to get reusable bags. Environmental Impact of Personal Lifestyle: Behavior # 3 Commuting is also one of the many problems that contribute to environmental pollution. Every day I commute to work and school, I add more greenhouse gases into the environment. Air pollution is a major problem and cars are a big cause of it. My commute is not that far it is about 20 miles from Glendale to Northridge, but this accumulates over time and can be harmful for our air quality. Long–Term Environmental Consequences: Behavior # 1 There are many proven disadvantages by wasting water. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Environmental health is the science that studies how the environment influences the human disease and health. Environment means things that are natural to us in the environment, for instance air, water, and soil. However, it also covers the physical, chemical, biological, and social features that surround us every day. The physical environment is the man–made or built structures that include our living, work, and even schools. Included in the community systems such as the roads and our transportations, and waste management. However, the alterations such as air pollution to our natural environment, is included in the physical section. The social environment is our social lifestyles like diet, exercise, socioeconomic status and many...show more content... The pollution has both chronic and acute effects on our health, and affects many of our systems and organs. The health consequences of lower levels of pollution have been more difficult to decide. The first cause is that people differ in response to the environment and the toxics. When we are exposed to the different conditions caused by the environment, the variation is wide because of how we react. With this variability of the population, it can mask the effects that do occur in a sensitive segment of the population. The second difficulty is our age, and the timing of the exposures and how it will influence both sensitivity to the environmental agent, and the type of effect it will cause our health. Infants and children may acquire lifelong damage compared to us adults. Environmental regulation and pollution control will remain an important cornerstone of the public health policy. The focus will be prevention, instead of disease treatment. Control of the pollution is a highly cost–effective means ensuring public health. With the contaminated environments and the work hazards in occupations, improving the pollution control may lead to a reduced health care disparities. When the health of all citizens is protected that a nation can fulfill its potential. Another reason we could consider is the climate change. The climate poses a challenge to our health. Threats to our health caused by a toxin or disease pathogen, there are ways the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Persuasive Essay On The Environment Ian Somerhalder once said, "The environment is in us, not outside of us. The trees are our lungs; the rivers, our bloodstream. We are all interconnected, and what you do to the environment, ultimately you do to yourself (SC 2)." I have noticed in my everyday life how unaware my friends and family are when it involves the environment. I often hear, "Just throw it away" or "Throw it in the ditch" when I am out in public. Disappointed and sad, I became an advocate for the environment (BE 1). If I was able to change the world by myself, I would change the pollution issues of land, water, and air. The land pollution has become a growing issue for years with landfills being the leading factor. In 2006, Americans generated 251 million tons of trash with at least three locations to go: fifty–five percent to landfills, thirty–three percent to recycling, and twelve and a half percent to incinerators (SC 7) (Kulpinski). Daily, one person would generate 4.6 pounds of garbage (BE 3). Many Americans do not think of the build–up from trash when they take out the garbage once a week. When a landfill site develops, there is an impact on biodiversity. About thirty to three hundred species are lost according to the Romanian Ministry of Environment and Forests when landfills are introduced to a new environment. Along with biodiversity, soil and groundwater are affected. Soil fertility decreases because of the mixture of toxic substance and decaying organic material. Groundwater can contain high levels of toxic metals, ammonia, toxic organic compounds, pathogens (SC 4) (Newton). Along with land pollution, the human race pollutes water and air. According to Jacques Cousteau, water and air, the two essential fluids on which all life depends, have become one thing – a global garbage can (SC 8). Since I was young, I have had a special place in my heart for bodies of water, especially the ocean, because of countless family vacations (BE 2). It is estimated that almost 8 million metric tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year (Sifferlin). This has caused for animals such as turtles and dolphins, fish and sharks, crabs and seabirds to be the victims of plastic debris (SC 6) (Cause and Effects). To put the issue into scale, it Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. The Impact of Buildings on the Environment In the last few decades, sustainability in design and innovation in construction methods have become increasingly important as both environmental activists and architects alike have realized the impact that buildings have on the environment. We live in an age where ourgroundwater is becoming more polluted; the earth's temperature continues rising due to ozone depletion and acid rain drips down upon us. The key source of all of these problems lies in our continually increasing use of non–renewable energy resources. Most of our electricity is created from fossil fuels and burning coal, and the emissions from these power plants are deadly to our environment in the long run. While development...show more content... In addition to the energy use in such buildings, the process of obtaining the raw materials used in construction and their processing can be detrimental to the environment. Quarrying for rock as well as mining for iron ore to be used in construction can disrupt the local wildlife and processing of can pollute our waterways, oceans and the air we breathe. In the United States alone, the annual total of construction and demolition waste is between 125–130 million tons. The vast majority of this waste ends up in landfills with no chance of reuse or recycling. Often, heavy metals end up in river and stream beds. The depletion of resources through the initial cultivation of raw materials is another major problem facing the world and the area of building construction. In the last 100 years the world's forests have been reduced by approximately 30%, and though efficiency of construction has increased, so has the volume of such construction, thus outweighing the positive steps taken. Considering the severity of the environmental impact of the excessive energy use, a trend towards "the creation of responsible management of a healthy built environment based on resource efficient and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Abstract On Environmental Pollution Abstract Environmental pollution is anything that can cause harm to the environment. Pollution is any undesired alteration of the environment and is often caused by human activities (Mader, 2016, pg. 552). Types of human pollution would be air, water, soil, radioactive, thermal, noise, and light. Each of these forms of pollution has been known to cause the enormous amount of concern for the environment. There are laws in place now that are limiting pollution and to help control the issue. Environmental pollution is a serious problem we are facing globally. It is the debate concerning pollution, which we have been pondering for the past century. Prior to the industrial revolution, scientists thought that the atmosphere was untouched by man–made pollutants until they found air bubbles hidden in the core of Greenland's ice shelf (Stromberg). After finding this essential development, scientist began to reconsider the initial cause of pollution and how to decrease the lasting effects of it. With this discovery, pollution was traced back to Ancient Rome and it was decided that globally we needed a new approach for dealing with this problem. There are numerous types of pollution and they each have a devastating effect on the global climate. A scientist has been working on ways to re–direct the negative effects of pollution and at the same time encourage people to try to find ways to do that part to help with this effort. We all can find some way to improve the world and decrease pollution. The problems with air pollution seem to be one of the largest most discussed situations. The Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) air pollution is the release of pollutants into the air that is damaging human health and world. There are many forms of air pollution and smog and soot are two of them. These two are discussed more when dissecting this problem due to them being the most common forms of air position, which are also the most detrimental of them all. When the sunlight and emissions from fossil fuels interact that is how smog is created. The creation of soot formed from smoke, dust, allergens and other particles are spread throughout the air in gas or solid form. Methane is also a huge component of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Caring About Our Environment Essay Caring About Our Environment Improving and maintaining the earth's environment is becoming a more important task every day of our lives. Due to ignorance and frequent carelessness, this important task is quickly becoming a critical one. For this reason, I took it upon myself to construct a strategic plan to enlighten my peers to the problems of our environment. I did this in hopes that it would encourage everyone to act responsibly towards improving and maintaining the environment. With ongoing threats to the earth's water supply, atmosphere, and surface, I found it necessary to devise a method of environmental enlightenment. I plan to apply this method at my place of academic study, The University. If supported by the faculty...show more content... I recently discovered that one cheeseburger takes more than 700 gallons of water to produce (includes water consumed by cows, water used to irrigate the cornfields that feed the cows, and the water used to produce the beef and cheese). When considering the millions of cheeseburgers that are consumed worldwide everyday, it is evident that the earth's water supply is declining rapidly. Due to air pollution, the ozone layer is also being consumed at an extreme rate. Its arch nemesis is the various fumes from cars and factories. Scientists estimate that each 1% drop in ozone levels causes a 3 to 6% rise in skin cancer cases. Since the ozone layer prevents most ultraviolet and other high–energy radiation from penetrating to the earth's surface, this is a crisis that has to be rectified. The ozone's depletion has dropped to a level so thin that if we brought it down to Earth, it would only be as deep as the thickness of three dimes. The only positive outlook concerning this matter is that the ozone has the ability to reconstruct itself when UV–C rays break the bond of O2. Single oxygen atoms combine with O2 to form ozone (UV–B rays limit this process still yet). This evidence shows that the world is in dire need of an environmental resurrection. In order for this to occur and be successful, it would require an effort by every individual nation of our world. My resolution requires that The University of South Carolina Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Into the Future This issue of making sure life paths don't negatively affect the environment is prevalent in everyone 's life. The problem is in front of our eyes, but we aren 't making changes to solve it. Carbon emissions is destroying our environment every single day. Most individuals wouldn't think twice about their actions because the negative effects don 't interfere with their present life. Our world is slowly deteriorating because of all the non–environmentally friendly actions we do, such as driving inefficient cars, buy goods produced from unregulated factories, and so on. Carbon emissions negatively impact the environment and the health of humans. It causes the global temperature to rise which creates severe weather events, like heat waves or forest fires. Increase in temperature affects many wildlife species, putting them in great amounts of stress potentially causing extinction. There will be a potential increase of respiratory and cardiovascular problems in humans as well. I want to do my part to prevent this problem from further happening. There are necessary steps for me to take before I can make sure that my idea be possible. I would like to become an architect in the future, and there are numerous issues that I will encounter trying to limit the amount of environmental damage caused by my actions. I have certain choices that I can make to ensure that this doesn't happen. As an architect. I will bring ideas to capture peoples ' attention. Houses and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Essay On Environmental Impact On Environment Environmental Impact of Personal Lifestyle: Behavior # 1 My first lifestyle behavior that has an impact on the environment is the overuse of bottled water and plastic bags. In our modern society using plastic bags and bottled water became a necessity in our everyday life which is completely unnecessary. I, personally depend on stuff made of plastic for my basic needs. I usually every time doing some shopping every time using new plastic bags. Sometimes these bags gathered in my house that I just throw them into the trash. I use plastic zippers to store food and other things. No doubt it is very convenient to cover the table with a plastic cover sheet before dinner and just take and throw away without a second thought. It is cheap and convenient, I don't have to spend a couple of minutes to clean it and reuse next time. Unfortunately, the higher prices for our lazy life is paying our environment with global warming. Bottled water consumption has attached to the issue of the overutilization of plastic to which I was just addicted to. While I was drinking my 8 glasses water per day, I was wasting 8 plastic bottles. During my cooking process where I used water from bottles assuming it is healthier than the tap water, I was wasting minimum 5 bottles per meal. I used to cook every day and sometimes twice a day. In this case, there are two issues in one that I was causing to the environment first quantity of the plastic waste and the use of low–quality water by paying lots of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Personal Impact On The Enviroment The personal impact I'm having on the enviroment right now is to ride my bicycle more often than driving this is important because if you're taking a short trip it would be better to just ride your bike instead of wasting gas, another personal impact I have on the enviroment is walking by doing this you can reduce the pollution in the enviroment and walking and riding your bike helps the gasses that harm our enviroment. Another way I'm helping the enviroment is by riding with other people instead of driving or having others ride with me that helps reduce carbon dioxide and it can be eaiser that way if you're going to the same place as the person. The next impact I have is shopping online how this helps the enviroment is shopping online than Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Environmental Pollution In The US Today Earth, home to the beauty of blue skies and clear waters, and bearer of each delicate life form, from the moss floating atop rivers, to the lions that prowl the mesa deserts; however, Earth is also home to the most destructive life form, humans. People reap the fruit of the Earth and bask in the beauty of nature, yet for generations, the efforts to protect the environment have only declined. The pollution that is wrought upon the environment every day is too often ignored for "more important" issues, such as poverty or crime; however, protecting the literal soil that people dwell on is just as vital as patrolling the society in which they live. Environmental pollution is a growing issue in the U.S. today, caused primarily by the lack of public concern or caution, harmful chemicals used by manufacturers and farmers, and lack of government enforcement or intervention. To begin with, the energy wasted out of pure negligence while performing daily tasks and activities wreaks havoc on the environment, greatly contributing to this issue. Fortunately, more often than not, excessive waste can easily be avoided altogether by being conscious of what is necessary, and what's just luxury. However, the extra couple of seconds that it takes to flip off a light switch or turn down a faucet often proves to be too inconvenient of a task for many individuals. By far, unnecessary use of electricity is the biggest energy waster among the general population. While one may believe they don't Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Positive Impact Of Humans On Environment Positive Impacts of Humans Activity on Environment Student's Name Institution of Learning Positive Impacts of Humans Activity on Environment Above all, there are a lot of articles and books that discover the negative impacts of humans' activity on environment. Undoubtedly, healthy food is a very important thing for our future, especially in conditions of great pollution of the natural environment. The genetic engineering and biotechnologies are perspective directions of scientific activity. However, such methods of interference in the nature have made our food more dangerous for our health. Now ecologically neutral production has become more popular in many countries. Public transport is one of the main elements of social infrastructure that ensures the transport needs of residents in urban, suburban and intercity environments. Reliable and efficient public transportation for the city is an important indicator of socio–political and economic stability. Automobile movement leads to excessive noise and air pollution. However, the main aim of the current paper is examination of two positive impacts of humans' activity on environment. First of all, one of the most important impacts of humans' activity on environment is introduction of plants from one part of the world to another. As it is known, the process of globalization is an important feature of the modern world. Globalization means that the country's borders wear away on the way of movement knowledge, technologies, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Living sustainably isn 't always easy. It seems that every aspect of life can be looked at from a sustainable perspective, and when trying to reduce your ecological footprint this can be very overwhelming. Previously, I believed that our values must be redefined to live sustainably, However, this series of lecture reflections made me realize that instead of changing our values to live sustainably, we must apply our current values in a sustainable way! Elizabeth Mrema is an environmental activist who uses her passion of law to help sustain the environment. Sharon Clark is a principle at the office of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development (CESD), and uses her background in political science to examine the government 's impact on the environment. Finally, graduates of Dalhousie's Sustainability program explain where their degree in sustainability has taken them. Through the stories of people who have applied sustainability to things they are passionate about, I have realized that we do not have to change our values to be sustainable. Sustainable living can be achieved when we combine our passions with sustainability. Elizabeth Mrema is passionate about law, and has an expertise in environmental law. She explains how environmental law has developed, and how governments must change the way they protect the environment. The government 's role in protecting the environment became apparent in the 1930's when laws were created to preserve flora and fauna Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. The Problem Of Food Waste In America Problem As society expands, it is critical to seek ways to lessen humans' environmental impact. A key aspect of practicing sustainability is efficiently using resources, and one of such resources is food. In America alone, about 40% of food goes uneaten, and as the population increases, pressures on managing this waste will only increase further (Buzby, et al. 499). With many Americans lacking a secure supply of food, the need for an improved ability to manage food waste is essential. Furthermore, food waste places a severe strain on the environment. In an article by Buzby, Hyman, Stewart, and Wells, they state, "Food loss at the retail and consumer levels represents significant amounts of money and other resources invested in food production, including land, fresh water, labor, energy, agricultural chemicals (e.g., fertilizer, pesticides) and other inputs to produce food that does not ultimately meet its intended purpose of feeding people" (Buzby, et al. 492). It is clear that the problems with food waste are immense, ranging from environmental to economic. Food waste across the country is a pressing issue, however, it is very large in scope. A narrower area with great potential for improvement is college dining halls, specifically those at Rutgers University. In Dr. Whitehair's article on improving university dining, she states "Food waste generated by universities each year is estimated at nearly 540,000 million tons" (Whitehair 63).
