India has achieved a lot in the medica
field..
• India has the largest number of medical colleges in the
world.
• India produces the largest number of Doctors amongst
the developing world. A large number of doctors leave
India’s shores & are considered the best in the world.
• India gets medical tourists from different countries
reflecting high standard of medical skills & expertise.
• India is the fourth largest producer of medicines by
volume in world & among the largest exporter.
• BUT!!!!!!!!!!!
• Majority of citizens have limited access
to high quality healthcare, & have poor
health indicators.
• 2/3rd of the population lacks access to
essential medicines.• Density of health care
workers in the country
is a little over 8 per
10,000 population
which is very low in
comparison to
developed countries.

In India, there are around 10 lakh Pharmacists
working in various positions, applying their
unique knowledge & skills, contributing to the
health of the Nation.
Pharmacists in
India
• Current availability of pharmacists in terms of
pharmacist to population ratio in India compares
favorably with that of the developing country.
• If well utilized, Pharmacists can effectively help in
achieving the goal of public health in India by
overcoming the scarcity of health care
professionals.
WHO recommends a ratio of one pharmacist per
2000 population in order for optimal health care to
be delivered.

• Pharmacists have through
knowledge about medicines and
their use and are in a better
position to educate other health
professionals about the rational
use of medicines.
• Pharmacists help in achieving
the goal of rational use of
medicines.
• Pharmacists are involved in
scientific procurement &
distribution of medicines.
By having access to medicinal records the
pharmacists are in a position to,
• influence the selection of medicines,
• dosage regimens,
• to monitor patient compliance and therapeutics
• recognize and report adverse drug reactions
(Pharmacovigilance).
• Pharmacists have more opportunity to interact
closely with the prescriber and patient and
therefore, to promote the rational prescribing
and use of drugs.
• Many health care
providers, mainly
doctors and nurses
contribute
significantly during

• It is estimated that
annually around
330,000 Indians die
due to TB. (WHO).
• The nature of
pharmacy profession
offers an excellent
opportunity to
become advocates for
TB control.
Role of Pharmacists in Revised
National TB control programme :
• Easy access for patients to Government’s
free anti-TB medicines i.e DOTS
• Early identification of TB suspects ,avoiding
diagnostic delays
• Rational Use of anti-TB medicines
• Patient Counseling & Education
• Community Awareness
Pharmacists in Mumbai & some other areas of Maharashtra
are already acting as DOT providers & are serving the TB
patients
On 27th April 2012 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
was signed between Central TB Division & IPA, AIOCD,
PCI & SEARPharm Forum, for inclusion of "Pharmacies in
RNTCP (National TB Programme)".
It is a historic development for the profession.
Pharmacies in
RNTCP -
A new era for Indian
Pharmacies in
National TB
Programme :
• Successful outcomes in delivery of ART is possible by
co-ordination & follow up by different professionals of
the health care team.
• Thus pharmacists can play a very important role in
prevention, treatment & diagnosis of HIV/AIDS.
• An estimated 33.4 million people
worldwide are living with HIV
(2008).
• There is acute shortage of
manpower in many communities
where Antiretroviral Therapy
(ART) is necessary.
• Higher level of adherence to therapy can be
achieved by proper patient counselling by
pharmacists.
• Pharmacists should be involved in
procurement, storage & distribution of quality
Antiretroviral (ARV) medicines.
• They can monitor ARV therapy, ensure proper
use of medicines.
• Pharmacists can get involved in various HIV
preventive programmes of NACO like;
• Blood safety
• STD control
• Condom promotion
• IEC & social mobilization
• Care, support & treatment of patient living
• In 1997 the role of pharmacists in effort to combat
HIV/AIDS was acknowledged by a join Declaration by
FIP & WHO.
• In 2004 FIP launched a international network of
pharmacists on HIV/AIDS (www.fip.org/hivaids)
which focuses on three main areas; training,
documentation & exchange of experience.
• It includes training modules, policy documents, useful
publications, links to relevant national & international
organizations, an event calendar to which additional
events can be added & a mailing list to allow
pharmacists to exchange point of view & experience.
• In rural areas there are
common issues of availability of
medicines, doctor, prevention
of ill health, promotion of
good health & environment.
• Public sector involvement is poor & unreliable
& private sector facilities are beyond reach.
Pharmacists are located in every nook
and corner of the country
• Ensuring safe use of medicines
• Decrease wastage of scarce resource.
• Logistic procurement, storage & distribution of
medicines.
• Provide information on medicines.
• Respond to the symptoms.
• In such situations pharmacists can act as first port
of call & create window of connectivity in medicine
supply, advice on its proper use & become a link
between community & health and help in,
