But in a world where objectives inevitably change, how do your leaders keep employees aligned? June 4, 2015 | 11am-12pm Pacific Session Description: We are launching a webinar series to provide a space for practitioners and researchers in both the leadership and network development areas to connect and learn from each other. Often these groups are not connected and we want to build awareness and even collaboration across the research – practice divide. We will focus on the intersection of leadership and network development. After clarifying the various ways in which leadership and networks intersect, we will consider the following questions: what does it mean for people in networks who see the need to be more intentional about developing leadership, and what does it mean for leadership development practitioners to design and deliver programs that better equip their participants to effectively utilize network strategies and tools. This first webinar will start to explore the intersection between leadership and networks, and introduce a relational perspective of leadership. The three partnering organizations will discuss concrete examples and ideas from their work, and then participants will have a chance to ask questions. Register for this first webinar with The Center for Creative Leadership, NYU/Wagner, and The Leadership Learning Community

As resources have become ever more complicated in a digital world, it is evident that cataloging practices and the metadata standards we use to guide these practices are becoming more constrained. Nowhere is this more apparent than with the cataloging of serial publications. For librarians, serial publications have been a constant challenge due to issues such as the multiple version problem, frequent changes in title or issuing body and complex publication histories. For users, serial publications are challenging due to the fact that a boundary has been established in the library profession where serial publications are described by librarians while the articles contained within those publications are handled by indexing and abstracting services. Although web-scale discovery systems have attempted to bridge the gap by providing a single point of discovery, user access is far from seamless. Recent changes within the library community can have a significant impact on serials cataloging and may help improve information retrieval for the end user. The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) holds great promise for alleviating some of the problems related to serials cataloging. While FRBR provides a useful mechanism for re-examining many of the problems with serials cataloging, the principles of Linked Data may further transform the way in which resources and the relationships between them are captured and presented to our users. By taking description out of our current record constraints, serials librarians will better be able to express how a particular journal has changed over time and the relationships between multiple versions of the same publication. The Linked Data model also opens up many opportunities for the provision of value-added content to bibliographic descriptions. Shifting description to a Linked Data model may not only help to alleviate many of the issues related to serials cataloging, it can also help users better understand and use bibliographic data effectively. Presenters: Marlene van Ballegooie and Juliya Borie University of Toronto Libraries

This is a knowledge creation model i propose which is entirely built around the classroom learning. The model was based on the SECI, OODA, and Kukkonen Models that are specifically designed for transforming a working organization into a learning organization. With the school, which is primarily a learning organization, some processes in the SECI and other models are no longer applicable. Thus, a dedicated knowledge creation model for classroom must be created.

CHS281 Recap and assignment guidance This module addressed creative approaches to the primary curriculum. What is creative in all these approaches is the fact that they do not focus on one subject at any one time and as a result they do not follow a ‘traditional, conventional even conservative’ way of teaching school subjects to pupils. Hence, we talk about pedagogic approaches that are promoting connections. Cross-curricular (connecting curriculum) is a major theoretical underpinning of these approaches. Barnes labelled cross-curriculum approaches as liberating. Barnes (2012, p.236) argued that: “Today cross-curricular approaches are believed to open up a narrowed curriculum, ensure greater breadth and balance and potential give each child the opportunity to find what Robinson and Aronica (2009) call their ‘element’”. Barnes (2012, p.239-240) argued that: “…neuroscience, psychology and social science lead us to suspect that effective, lasting, transferable learning in both pure subject and cross-curricular contexts may be generated by: emotional relevance, engagement in fulfilling activity, working on shared challenges with others.” Throughout the course of this module we saw how different, creative, pedagogic (inherently cross-curricular) approaches attempted to strike such emotional relevance with pupils, such a motivating engagement and all these within a ‘sharing’ context with others. HOWEVER: The cross-curricular dimensions are essentially the responsibility of the teachers, especially in terms of devising, expediting and completing projects. Cross-curricular teaching is not an easy task – teachers need to be mindful of their planning; Barnes (2012, p.248) tells us about: ‘…spurious links were often made between too many subjects, and little sense of progression or subject record keeping were possible.’ This is why teachers need to carefully decide which subjects can contribute and carefully write up learning objectives accordingly. What is the theoretical underpinning of cross-curricular approaches? Cross-curricular approaches reflect a constructivist and social constructivist approach to learning. In constructivism, the basic idea is that the individual learner must actively construct knowledge and skills. Dewey, Bruner, Vygotsky, Piaget have contributed to this notion of constructivism in learning. Cognitive constructivism draws mainly from Piaget’s work on his theory of cognitive development. Piaget proposed that individuals construct their knowledge through experience and interaction with the environment. Social constructivism with Vygotsky its main proponent, claims that the social context of learning is also very important. Creative approaches Story Project/problem-based Enquiry Outdoors Environmental Education Education for sustainability Margaret Dolnaldson (1978) Children’s Minds – embedded/dis-embedded contexts. Szurnak and Thuna (2013, p.550-551) argued that: “Narrative is a powerful tool for teaching a ...
