Writing Introductory Paragraphs
An introductory paragraph tells the reader what your essay is about. It should
include a topic sentence and a high‐level outline of what is in your essay or
paper.
DIRECTIONS: Below are a main idea, and a short list of subjects to be covered in two
essays. Read the information. Then create a topic sentence and write a short
introductory paragraph for each essay.

1. A lot of people worry about their health, and put off making positive
changes in their lives because they think it is going to be too difficult.
But improving your health is easier than you think. There are four
aspects to good health—diet, exercise, sleep and emotional health.
This essay will look at each aspect and give you the information you
need to start improving your health today!
2. If you are thinking about running a marathon, training the right way is
essential. But training doesn’t just mean continuing to run longer and
longer distances. There are actually four key building blocks to
marathon training: base mileage, long runs, speed work, and rest and
recovery.
