2. WHO (World Health Organization)
• For the maintenance of health of the people, the Govt of India has
taken the support of some international organization like WHO,
UNICEF, Red cross society etc
• These organization are helpful by giving support in the form of
money & doing services whenever necessary
• WHO is a independent, specialized, non-political health agency of
UNO with its headquarters at Geneva, Switzerland
• In 1946 it constitution was drafted under committee of
chairmanship of Rana Sand & approved in same year in
International Health conference of 51 nations in New york
• Constitution came into force on 7th April 1948
• Hence 7th April is celebrated every year as World Health Day
3. Objectives
• To attain the highest level of health by all people “Health is
defined as a complete physical, mental & social well-being &
not merely the absence of disease”
• Government have the responsibility for maintaining the health
of their people
4. Membership:
• Open to all countries of UNO
• Other may join when the health Assembly approves their
application
• Each member state contributes yearly to the budget
• WHO started with 51 nations
• End of 1970 181 nations joined as member of organization
• End of 2007 193 nations had membership in WHO
5. Function of WHO
• Attaining health primary & ultimate goal of WHO
• Providing health education
• To promote the people for proper use of health services
• Improvement of family health
• Control of communicable diseases
• Surveillances of communicable & non-communicable diseases
• International standardization of drugs
• Maintenance of environmental health

7. WHO – Health Education
Health education has been defined as a
process, which effects changes in the health practices of
the people & in the knowledge & attitude related to
changes
8. Aim
• To ensure that health is valued as an asset in the
community
• To promote the development & proper use of health
services
• To equip the people with skills, knowledge, attitude to
enable them to solve their health problems by their
own actions & efforts.
9. Alma Ata
• In 1978 general assembly of WHO met in Amla- Ata,
Kazakhstan (Russia) to discuss the measures to be taken for
the primary health care of people
• In these conference representatives 134 countries, 67 members
belong to various field of UNO & other pertaining to non-
government organization participated & passed a resolution
“Health for All by 2000 AD”
• In that conference AYUSH etc have been recognized by WHO
as Alternative system of medicine.
