INTRODUCTION
Group work one of the primary methods of social
work which develops the ability to established
contractive relationship in through group activities.
Social group work is a methods of social work which
helps individuals to enhance their social functioning
through purposeful group experiences and to cope
more effectively with their personal, group or
community problems.
Current use of Group in India
 Social Group Worker in Community Development Setting
 Social Group Worker in Industrial Settings
 Social Group Worker in Prison Settings
 Social Group Worker in child and youth Setting
 Social Group Worker in Institutions for Children and Adolescents
 Social Group Worker in Services for the aged
Social group worker in community development setting
Community is..
A group of individuals
Who live in a close proximity to one another
Who share a common environment and
Who identify themselves with that community
Primary Objectives in Community Setting
 Social integration of the community on a local neighborhood basis.
 Through participation is self-help and mutual-aid programmers,
 Motivating people to improve their living conditions.
 Especially those adversely affecting their Physical and Social development.
 Creation of opportunities for undertaking programmers of economic betterment based
on the maximum-use of community resources and local initiative.
 Develop a sense belonging to the community
 Identification and development of local leader.
 The group work in community setting is in the form of self-help groups, recreational
groups, action groups, etc.
Group Worker in Industries
 Business and industry are not merely profit oriented institutions but
have social obligations as well, hence social group work does have
plenty of scope in industry, as it can help it to achieve its social
goals.
 To day, it is not only the production or sale of goods and services
that is the managements’ concern, but the social climate insert the
organization, the work structure and the mental health of the
employees is of equal concern.
Factor influencing group work in industries
 The attitude of the management
 The interest of employees towards group work
 The needs of the business
 The availability of employees for group work
 Cost effectiveness of the group work services provided
Role of Social Workers in Industrial Setting
 Family industrial and group, counselling and home visit in relation to adjustment
of the work orientation, personality and other problem at preventive level.
 Active participation in corporate social responsibility activities and community
development initiatives of the industry.
 Employee management and effective intervention of labor management
problems.
 Workers recreation Management.
 Health and educational help.
 Co-ordination of welfare services with other welfare agencies.
Group Work in Prison
Group therapies to indulge the prison mates to share
their feelings
Indulging them in study and vocational training
Helps them become employable when they get released
Helps the inmates to tackle post prison experience
Role of a Social worker in prisons
 To assess new arrivals to the prison
 Develop treatment and support plans for inmates
 Provide individual therapy & psychosocial educational support
groups
 Provide referrals to medical or mental-health services
 To monitor the progress and compliance of inmates in treatment
 To arrange group activities for recreation
Social Group Worker in child and youth Setting
Under this group the educational setting group work practiced in
India and this also one of the effective ways to work with children and
youth.
Types of Groups
 Remedial - aimed to improve certain skills.
 Supportive - giving emotional support to the
students.
 Psycho educational - deals with common issues occur at
different stages of development.
Social group work with educational institution setting
Many a time neither the parent nor the teacher are aware of the
fact that child is facing stress in school or college even if they do, they
are not proficient in dealing with the problem. The sources of stress
may from scholastic difficulties to the problem of maintaining
relationship. The organizational dynamic of schools also makes an
impact on the social and academic adjustment of children and
adolescents.
Scope of group worker with educational institution setting
 Helping slow learners.
 Mainstreaming out of school children and youth.
 Dealing with problem of dropout.
 Helping youth acquire value education.
 Helping youth acquire skills to become self employee
 Generating awareness about drug use, HIV/AIDS and other health
issues.
Social Group Worker in Institutions for Children and Adolescents
 In our country both the government and voluntary organizations offer
institutional services for children and youth. This institutions are not the places
in which children and youth or kept only to fed, clothed and perhaps restored in
a family.
 The group worker’s role in children’s home is one of the most important areas
of work. She deals mostly with the children and adolescents to whom the
groups situation is crucial even in life outside of the institution.
 In the absents of family these children need all the services given to children in
their own homes and sum additional ones related to their anxieties, loneliness,
and planning for life outside the institutional services.
The functions of the social group worker on the institutional team
 Direct group work with formed groups of children inside the
institution.
 Work with parent groups, where possible.
 Being responsible and helping with the recreational program as
part of group living.
 Supervision and coordination of child care takers.
 Supervision volunteers who work with group of children placed in
the institution.
Social Group worker in services for the aged
 The social group work with the aged is organized at both the
community as well as the agency level. The group worker’s work is
usually direct with specific groups.
 At times the worker has to work indirectly with the group of
volunteers working for the aged.
 As all institutionalized people, they feel that they are removed
from the normal community life, which centers on the family.
Scope of group work with the aged
To raise the self-esteem of the participants
To give an opportunity for planning
To become a part of their own small community and, if
possible, a part of a larger community.
To establish a group bond that may replace the warmth
of family relationship.
The functions of social group worker in community based agencies
 Working out a program for different kinds of groups as per the
needs with this age group
 As in all group work, some contact with individual outside of the
group, but more intensively in the particular age group
