This is where we live or die - we either have students who can understand the content and make meaning or they can’t - when they can’t understanding, they lose attention - and we as teachers lose purpose.\n
For some students, YES!!! - Remember that it is different to understand and comprehend a novel than a content text. Novels are about plot and theme. A content text is about different strategies - rereading, interpreting events (history), transforming charts and graphs into meaning, etc... So comprehension means different things to different content.\n
Student-Centered Comprehension: teaching students how to use specific comprehension strategies independently. Students are learning comprehension strategies and content at the same time - this requires a lot of emphasis on reading and thinking.\n\nContent-Centered Comprehension: Teachers use materials (graphic organizers, reading guides) to make the reading more comprehensible. The main objective is understanding new information.\n
There are costs to taking the time to teaching comprehension....it doesn’t happen quickly or easily. But when it is taught well, teachers see results.\nConnect to the image on slide - putting the student behind the wheel.\n
