2. Distance education has a history of 100 years in UK, it initiation
in India was made in the year 1964, with the recommendation of
Kothari .D . S for establishment of Directorate of Distance
Education in Delhi University.
Distance education has been a way of learning for
countless individuals for more than a hundred years, it
is a general concept with its roots in adult education ;
embracing independent study, self directed learning, as
well as nontraditional and open education throughout
the use of technology, starting with print and
transportation as in correspondence education and
later with electronic communication as in educational
radio , instructional television and web based education
(e- learning ).
The field of study also includes radio ,television,
telecommunication satellites, cable television and
internet for teaching and learning .
3. A form of Adult Education.
Teacher and Learner are separate during the
majority of the instruction.
Distance Education (DE), also known as
distributed learning, uses a wide range of
computing & communication technologies to
provide learning opportunities beyond the
time and place constraints of traditional
classroom (The CSU Center for Distributed
Learning , 2004) .
4. To provide an efficient and less expensive method
of educational instruction at a higher level in
context of national development in India.
To provide facilities to pursue higher education to
all qualified & willing persons who had failed to
join regular university courses due to personnel &
economical reasons or because of their inability to
get admission to regular college.
To provide opportunities of academic pursuits to
educated citizens without disturbing their present
employment.

6. A wide range of technological options are
available to the distance educator.
They fall into four major categories:
Voice
Video
Data
It includes 1)Computer Assisted
Instruction(CAI)
2)Computer Managed Instruction(CMI)
3)Computer Mediated Education(CME)

9. Learner- Content :
Interaction with content takes place when the
learner establishes new knowledge by
encountering new information & combining it
with the body of knowledge already retained by
him or her.
Learner- Instructor :
Interaction with instructors can help students
clarify unclear points and reinforce correct
interpretation of course information.
Learner- Learner :Interaction with learner is
intended to promote understanding of the course
content and stimulate critical learning.
Learner- Technology / System :
Student’ experience with computers can affect
their learning in distance education as well as
improve their computer skills.
10. Technology in Dist Learning
Synchronous Learning
Asynchronous
learning
11. In synchronous learning, all participants are
"present" at the same time. In this regard , it
resembles traditional classroom teaching methods
despite the participants being located remotely. It
requires -
a timetable to be organized.
Web conferencing, videoconferencing, educational
television, instructional television are examples of
synchronous technology , as are direct – broad
cast satellite (DBS) , internet , radio , live
streaming , telephone and VoIP (Voice Over
Internet Protocol).
. Online meeting software such as Adobe Connect
has helped to facilitate meetings.
12. Computer Based Distance Learning : Computer
based Learning : here the students are required to
assemble in a computer lab or in a classroom at a fixed
time.
4. Fixed Time Online Courses : In these courses the
students are required to log- in to their online accounts
at a specified time. Such courses are the most common
form of distance learning . Although they are absolutely
online , but live chats are a regular part of the course.
5. Open Schedule Online Courses : This type of online
courses gives you the maximum freedom. The students
are provided with mailing lists , email, Internet – based
textbooks and bulletin boards to finish their
assignments. At the beginning of course , the student
are provided with a schedule but are allowed to work at
their own velocity as long as the students stick to the
schedule.
13. In asynchronous learning, participants access
course materials flexibly on their own
schedules.
Students are not required to be together at the
same time. Mail correspondence, which is the
oldest form of distance education , is an
asynchronous delivery technology , as are
message board forums , email, video and
audio recordings, print materials , voicemail.

16. 1. Provides for an increase in Access to education for
those who otherwise have no other opportunities due
to work, family or physical limitations.
2. Provides for a modality of instruction better suited
for certain learners.
3. Greater flexibility for scheduling learning-Students
can determine time and place of “class time “.
4. Greater flexibility in location for study-Students
can engage course at home or work or on campus or
at a library.
17. 5. Distance Education is Learner Centered -DE
places responsibility for learning with the
learner who must be more active & self
directed.
6. Facilitates greater learner-instructor
interaction.
7. It doesn't matter where you live – you can
gain a degree from anywhere in the world.
8. Facilitates Educational Development-
Individual Instructor Development.
18. 9. A distance learning course often costs less than a fulltime
degree. As with a full – time degree, students may find that
they gain useful, transferable skills , such as planning &
research.
10. Opportunity to develop technology competencies for
instructors & learners.
11. Access to global resources and experts via internet
communication & Internet resources.
12. Allows for the internationalization of learning
opportunities.
13. Centralized resources can produce higher quality
materials for distribution.
14. Has the potential to equalize access to education.
19. 1.Time and frustration involved learning how to get on-
line for novices.
2.Lag time between student input and feedback -Time
lapse between need for learner support & resolution.
3.Occasional internet provider downtime .
4.Student must be more active and self-directed in
learning environment – Depends on individual motivation
& initiative.
5.Occasional feelings of isolation- Potentially less group
support for learners leading to isolation & possible non-
completion of program.
6.Instructional design for group activities and group
interaction more demanding on the instructor.
20. 7. Demands large effort and cost to develop
appropriate materials .
8. Demands large effort to create and
maintain the technological infrastructure.
9. Distance Education is not for everyone.- It
is not for undisciplined learners nor inflexible
instructors.
