Thankfully, I calmed down after that and
studied hard.
After working at the company for more than
20 years, Sarah has decided to call it a day
and retire.
The mountaineer slipped but managed to
hang onto a rock with one hand and pull
himself back up. He had a real close shave
with death.
Mother: Rob, your spending is getting out of
hand. It’s time you started to use your money
more wisely.
Son: OK mum. I’ll try to be more careful in
future.
Billy has been feeling under the weather
since he split up with his girlfriend of five
years. I’m going to visit him to try and cheer
him up.
Lee had a close shave after he bravely fought
off a robber and nearly got shot. He’s a really
lucky man.
Idioms in Use Set Two
Read this short passage aloud. Think about the meanings of the idioms
as you read. This will train your brain to master these idioms.
Situation: A school teacher is feeling a bit ill, and her class of young
children are becoming difficult for her to control.
The kids are really starting to get out of hand now. They’re running
around and causing trouble. One of them nearly broke a window after
throwing a ball at it. Luckily it didn’t smash, but it was a really close
shave. I’m feeling a little under the weather too. I’ve got a headache,
and the children’s screaming and shouting isn’t helping me. I think I’m
going to call it a day and tell the head teacher that I need to go home. I
hope he can find a replacement teacher for a few days.
