Spatio-temporal analyses of the impacts of extreme weather events on renewabl...Global Risk Forum GRFDavos
This document discusses the impacts of extreme weather events on renewable energy infrastructure in Germany. It outlines that heavy rain can damage hydroelectric plants and reduce output. Wind turbines are vulnerable to tornadoes and severe storms. Photovoltaic panels can be disturbed by thunderstorms, hail, high winds and lightning. Germany's climate mitigation concepts aim to integrate risk analyses of extreme weather with analyses of potential renewable energy sites. Regulations for distances between infrastructure and weather risks could be standardized nationwide. The concepts seek to develop sustainable renewable energy systems resilient to climate change impacts.

This document summarizes a study that compares the effectiveness of three forms of Moringa oleifera extracts for removing turbidity from water: shelled blended powder, deoiled powder, and purified protein powder. The study found that the purified protein powder was the most effective at removing turbidity, followed by the deoiled powder and shelled blended powder, but the protein powder required the lowest dosage. The study aimed to determine the optimum dosage of each extract for water samples with initial turbidities of 50, 150, and 450 NTU and also performed a cost analysis comparing the extracts to alum, a common chemical coagulant.
This document summarizes a study analyzing log files from a medical image search system to understand how medical professionals search for images. The analysis found that searches most commonly involved conditions, body parts, and imaging modalities. Queries often involved modifying search terms between queries. The most frequent search terms identified topics that could be useful for an image retrieval benchmark. In conclusion, log file analysis provides insights into user search behavior that can help improve image search systems.

The document presents the optimal sizing of a hybrid photovoltaic-wind power system for rural electrification in India. It involves modeling the system components, including photovoltaic modules, wind turbines and batteries. The optimization aims to minimize the levelized cost of energy while meeting the desired reliability, represented by the loss of power supply probability. The modeling is implemented using MATLAB software. Simulation results for a sample location in Andhra Pradesh, India show that a hybrid solar-wind system can generate sufficient power for a rural village by optimizing the component sizes.

This document discusses measuring human intelligence. It defines intelligence and describes the need to measure intelligence to differentiate abilities and assign tasks. It discusses factors that can be used to assess intelligence, including logical reasoning, reading/writing skills, memory, visual/auditory processing, and speed of processing. Instruments that can measure intelligence are also described, such as IQ tests, the Binet-Simon Intelligence Scale, and Wechsler scales. The document provides context around defining and measuring the multidimensional attribute of human intelligence.
GT Succeeding at succession: establishing the value of your company CanadaGrant Thornton
To maximize profits and value upon a succession, privately held businesses should start planning for succession several years in advance. Don't wait for a year of super profits, or a year of weak performance, to plan an exit. Start early, so you can transition on your own terms, while you are in control. Understanding your business's value drivers, such as financial performance, industry trends, management skills, tangible and intangible assets, is essential for strategic succession planning and enhancing the long-term value and viability of the business. Valuation methods exist to determine a business's worth, but the final value is an art that depends on the context and goals of the succession.

This document summarizes an experimental study that evaluated the effects of drill geometry and machining parameters on drilling carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites. The study used high-speed steel, solid carbide, and polycrystalline diamond drills to drill holes in CFRP laminates at various spindle speeds and feed rates. The results showed that drill point geometry, material, speed, and feed rate influence delamination, surface roughness, cutting forces, and chip formation. In particular, a combination of high speed and low feed rate with a drill geometry having a high point angle was found to reduce delamination.

This document summarizes a study on using a Fresnel lens to concentrate solar rays and transfer heat to a phase change material (paraffin wax) for thermal energy storage. The integrated collector storage system was experimentally tested for charging and discharging performance. Results showed the paraffin wax was able to store heat in the 50-65°C range suitable for domestic hot water applications. During discharge, different heat transfer fluid tube configurations were tested and a multiple pass design provided faster thermal response times but a steeper temperature drop compared to a single pass design. In conclusion, paraffin wax was found to be a promising phase change material for low temperature thermal energy storage applications.

This document presents a mathematical model for obtaining survival probabilities of aldosterone-producing adenoma due to stress. It considers two types of non-cumulative damage shock models. The initial homogeneous Poisson process is split into three homogeneous Poisson processes based on the distribution of small, intermediate, and large damage caused by shocks affecting a biological organ system. The study examines how administration of low-salt and high-salt diets cause shock effects in terms of aldosterone levels in the human system, and reveals the damage to organ systems in the sense of blood pressure. The higher levels of stress from high-salt food were found to potentially cause permanent damage to biological organisms.

This document summarizes the design and testing of a manually constructed Wi-Fi cantenna (combination of a can and antenna). It describes how a cantenna works to focus and strengthen Wi-Fi signals by reflecting radio waves within a metal can to the receiving wire. The document provides details on the design process, including selecting an appropriately sized can, marking positions for drilling holes, soldering on an N-connector and wire, and connecting to a computer's Wi-Fi card. It then discusses testing the cantenna in a college campus, finding it improved signal strength by 20% over the existing antenna in areas with weak signals. Finally, it outlines potential future work involving testing other homemade antenna designs and comparing performances.

This document presents a case study on solid waste management practices at Sri Venkateswara University College of Engineering hostels in Tirupati, India. The study found that dry waste from the boys and girls hostels was openly burned, while wet food waste was fed to cattle. Analysis showed the per capita waste generation was 0.28kg/day for boys and 0.312kg/day for girls. Physical components and chemical characteristics of the waste were measured. The calorific value of components like wood, paper and organic matter was higher in boys' hostel waste than girls', indicating potential for energy recovery from both. The study concluded that current waste management is unsatisfactory and recommends adopting scientific collection, processing and
This document summarizes and compares the perspectives of three authors - Jeremy Harmer, David Nunan, and H. Douglas Brown - on teaching listening skills. It discusses how listening is an active process of making sense of what we hear. The authors developed similar principles for English teachers to use when planning listening activities, such as considering students' proficiency levels and using authentic language. While the authors categorized listening differently, they agreed on its importance for developing speaking skills through imitation. Teachers should encourage students to respond to what they hear in order to develop listening as a communication skill.
Maximise your returns in crisis management preparedness: a cyclic approach to...Global Risk Forum GRFDavos
This document discusses using a cyclic approach to crisis management training and exercises. It proposes a 6-step cycle: 1) identify desired outcomes, 2) design suitable training/exercises, 3) deliver the training/exercises, 4) review the outcomes, 5) identify any remaining knowledge or skill gaps, and 6) determine if further training is needed or the skills can be maintained. This cyclic approach helps ensure continuous learning and improvement. It also discusses the importance of using trained evaluators and a clear evaluation methodology to assess outcomes at each stage of the cycle.

This document discusses objective methods for measuring heat transport properties of clothing. It begins by describing the importance of measuring heat transport and the mechanisms by which heat is transported through clothing. It then discusses three main instruments used for objective measurement: the togmeter, guarded hot plate method, and Alambeta instrument. For each, it provides details on the basic principles and procedures used to measure thermal conductivity, resistance, and transmittance of fabrics. The document aims to explain the various objective methods utilized to evaluate the heat transport behaviors of clothing materials.
