ACIDD and Grenoble Management School presented the Club Green and Connected Cities at ICT2008 in Lyon during a networking session. The Club Green and Connected Cities is a cluster of cities, industrials, universities, non-profit orgnizations, local authorities, companies working together closely to imagine, test and build innovative and operational initiatives to support interconnected and sustainable cities for the 21st century through the appropriate use of new collaborative and unified technologies.

Club Green and Connected Cities 21 selected green and connected cities and urban areas from Europe and Mediterranean area together with a group of non competing multinational and innovative companies supported by a unique network of experts, international researchers, associations and NGOs. decided to join their skills, their resources and efforts to address the key issues of connected and sustainable cities and to work together to implement operational solutions .

5. Why a Club Green and connected cities? The communities and urban areas Europe and around the Mediterranean area, must propose a new agenda to answer the challenge of commuting and mobility. A pragmatic and innovative answer to a demand The Club intents to conduct research and applied programs to imagine, to test and to build innnovative and operational initiatives to support interconnected and sustainable cities for the 21st century through the appropriate use of new collaborative and unified technologies.

8. The last declaration of the November 3rd summit for the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership is precisely outlining that “ Sustainable Metropolitan and Urban Development are at the heart of the major issues of the Mediterranean. Sustainable Urban Development implies that governments, developers and financiers to better anticipate future urban growth, need to better meet the basic needs of populations and integrate environmental constraints. This challenge implies the involvement of regional authorities to define appropriate planning through an integrated approach ”. In this context local actors and their partners could rely on ICT for development projects of sustainable urban development. It is also in this context that the idea of creating a network of cities connected and sustained in the Euro-Mediterranean partnership is emerging. 9. Valenciennes , a large city in the North of France, at the heart of a large urban area of more than 2.5 million people, was considered as all disaster: an unemployment rate over 30%, large brownfields, polluted soil. We decided to take our responsibility in grouping all economic actors and local authorities, with help from Europe. We have decided to use ICT as a lever to develop new activities and to establish effective governance with a focus in all the domains of sustainable development. The success is there but we need to go further, in sharing initiatives and to be operational to be really in the 21st century. It’s also why we hosted the first international forum ICT 21, and we created the national College of Advanced Studies for sustainable development (Collége des Hautes Etudes pour le Developpement Durable). We are strongly involved in CIP network, ICT for Energy Efficiency, and we welcome in spring 2009 the international research and academic forum on ICT and sustainable development.
