Pericarditis and it's diagnosis, treatment and complications.Ilkin Bakirli
Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium that commonly results in a pericardial effusion. It can be acute or chronic and has many potential causes including viral, bacterial, fungal infections, autoimmune diseases, uremia, drugs, malignancy, and idiopathic. Symptoms include chest pain and dyspnea while signs include a pericardial friction rub, irregular pulse, and diminished heart sounds. Diagnosis involves history, exam, labs, ECG, echo, and pericardiocentesis. Treatment is aimed at the underlying cause along with medications, while recurrent cases may require procedures like pericardiectomy. Complications can include cardiac tamponade, a
Disorders of fluid balance, electrolyte disturbances and acid base balanceIlkin Bakirli
This document provides an overview of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance in the human body. It discusses the distribution and composition of body fluids, fluid regulation, and disorders that can occur when fluid, electrolyte, or acid-base balance is disrupted. Specific electrolytes like sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphate, and magnesium are examined, as well as acid-base disorders including metabolic and respiratory acidosis and alkalosis. Causes, clinical presentations, diagnoses, and treatments are described for various imbalance conditions.
Cirrhosis is a diffuse process characterized by liver necrosis and fibrosis that converts the normal liver architecture into abnormal nodules lacking lobular organization. It has many causes including alcohol, viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and genetic disorders. Clinically, it manifests as asymptomatic or symptoms like vomiting and weight loss. Complications arise from portal hypertension and include ascites, variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, and hepatorenal syndrome. Diagnosis involves liver function tests, imaging, and biopsy. Treatment focuses on managing complications and the underlying cause. For end-stage disease, liver transplantation may be required.
This document provides information on pneumonia, lung abscess, and bronchiectasis. It discusses the clinical classification, pathophysiology, etiology, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and management of pneumonia. It also covers the etiology, symptoms and diagnosis, and management of lung abscess. Finally, it discusses the introduction, etiology, clinical manifestations and diagnosis, and management of bronchiectasis.
In this presentation, I have described stroke and its subtypes, the ischemic stroke and the hemorrhagic stroke, their diagnosis, clinical manifestations and treatments.
This document discusses various esophageal disorders including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), achalasia, esophageal diverticula, and esophageal perforation. It provides details on the etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of each condition. For example, it states that GERD is caused by an incompetent lower esophageal sphincter which allows gastric content to reflux, and that treatment involves lifestyle changes and medications like antacids, H2 blockers, or PPIs. Achalasia is defined by a hypertonic LES that does not relax, causing dysphagia and regurgitation. Its treatment includes dilation, botulinum toxin injection, or surgery.

This document discusses various bacteria that can cause infectious diarrhea, including Salmonella spp, Shigella spp, Escherichia coli, Campylobacter spp, Vibrio spp, Yersinia spp, and Clostridium difficile. It covers the microbiology, pathogenesis, symptoms, routes of transmission, treatment, and diagnosis for each bacterium. Common symptoms of bacterial diarrhea include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, and dehydration. Diagnosis involves culturing bacteria from stool samples and performing tests like PCR and serology. Proper treatment depends on the identified bacteria but often involves fluid replacement and antibiotics.
This document summarizes various types of ventricular arrhythmias:
- Premature ventricular contractions are ectopic beats arising from the ventricles. Ventricular tachycardia involves three or more consecutive ectopic beats over 100 bpm. Torsades de Pointes shows a changing QRS axis and morphology due to long QT syndrome. Ventricular fibrillation is chaotic electrical activity in the ventricles causing cardiac arrest.
- Treatment involves drugs like amiodarone, procainamide, and sotalol acutely. Long-term options include beta blockers, amiodarone, and implantable cardioverter defibrillators.
Deutetrabenazine, a drug for Tardive DyskinesiaIlkin Bakirli
This randomized controlled trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of deutetrabenazine for treating tardive dyskinesia. 117 patients were randomized to receive either deutetrabenazine or placebo for 12 weeks. Deutetrabenazine significantly reduced abnormal involuntary movements as measured by the AIMS scale compared to placebo. While treatment success rates on clinical scales slightly favored deutetrabenazine, the results were not statistically significant. Deutetrabenazine was well tolerated and allowed continued use of other psychiatric medications. The study provides Class I evidence that deutetrabenazine may be an effective and well-tolerated treatment for tardive dyskinesia.
Beta thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that results in reduced or absent beta globin chains, causing anemia. It is endemic in Azerbaijan, where 10% of the population are carriers and it is the 4th highest country in terms of prevalence. The most common beta thalassemia mutations in Azerbaijan are Codon 8-AA, IVS2-1, and IVS1-110. While historically fatal, diagnosis and treatment have improved in recent years due to a specialized thalassemia center providing free care and increased screening and awareness programs. The high rates are believed to have evolved from a heterozygous advantage in protecting against past endemic malaria.
Liver cirrhosis is the histological development of regenerative nodules surrounded by fibrous bands in response to chronic liver injury, leading to portal hypertension and end-stage liver disease. It is caused by various factors like alcohol, hepatitis B and C, and results in impaired liver function and portal hypertension. While liver transplantation remains the only cure, pharmacological therapies are being developed to halt progression or potentially reverse cirrhosis. Genetic factors also contribute to individual rates of fibrosis progression.
This document provides an overview of metoprolol, a beta1-selective adrenergic receptor blocker used to treat hypertension, angina, arrhythmias, and migraine headaches. Ce document est une ressource qui met en évidence deux obstacles qui empêchent les jeunes de mener une vie épanouie : l'inaction et le pessimisme.
1) Découvrez comment l'inaction, c'est-à-dire le fait de ne pas agir ou d'agir alors qu'on le devrait ou qu'on est censé le faire, est un obstacle à une vie épanouie ;
> Comment l'inaction affecte-t-elle l'avenir du jeune ? Que devraient plutôt faire les jeunes pour se racheter et récupérer ce qui leur appartient ? A découvrir dans le document ;
