1. THE ENGLISH PUG AND THE FRENCH POODLE
A dashing looking English man, holding
his pug, is giving a superior stare at
Notre-Dame Basilica, symbol of the religious
influence on French Canadians.
210 feet away at the northern corner of the
edifice, a woman in a Chanel style suit, poodle
against her, shoots an offended look to
the Bank of Montreal’s head office, symbol
of English power.
With their masters oblivious to each other,
the two dogs on the alert have already sniffed
out the opportunity to unite.
Inspired by the Commedia dell’arte and
Two Solitudes from novelist Hugh MacLennan,
these two snobs set up an ironically touching
scene of the cultural distance between
English and French Canadians.

LE CANICHE FRANÇAIS ET LE CARLIN ANGLAIS
La femme au tailleur style Chanel, son caniche
serré contre elle, braque un regard offusqué
sur le siège social de la Banque de Montréal,
symbole du pouvoir anglais.
À 65 mètres au coin sud de l’édifice,
un homme chic d’allure anglaise, carlin au bras,
toise d’un air supérieur la Basilique Notre-Dame,
symbole de l’emprise religieuse sur
les Canadiens français.
Tandis que leurs maîtres s’ignorent, les deux
chiens en alerte ont déjà flairé l’occasion
de s’unir.
Inspirés de la Commedia dell’arte et de
Deux solitudes du romancier Hugh MacLennan,
ces deux snobs dressent une scène ironique
attachante de l’éloignement culturel entre
Canadiens français et anglais.
