STAGE 4 HISTORYTopic 2:ANCIENT GREECE Inquiry Questions: What can we learn about societies and civilisations of the past? What have been the legacies of past societies and civilisations? Outcomes to be included Expected Topic Outcomes: 4.1	describes and explains the nature of history, the main features of past societies and periods and their legacy 4.5	identifies the meaning, purpose and context of historical sources 4.8	locates, selects and organises relevant information from a number of sources, including ICT, to conduct basic historical research  4.10	selects and uses appropriate oral, written and other forms, including ICT, to communicate effectively about the past. Other outcomes we could cover in this unit: 4.4 identifies major periods of historical time and sequences people and events within specific periods of time 4.9	uses historical terms and concepts in appropriate contexts
Layered Curriculum C Layer : : Basic knowledge, understanding. The student builds on his/her current level of core information.    B Layer : : Application or manipulation of the information learned in the C layer. Problem solving or other higher level thinking tasks can be placed here. A Layer : : Critical Thinking and Analysis. This layer requires the highest and most complex thought. Create leaders, voters.
C - Layer Maximum 65 points in this layer (Assignments with an * are required)  Read a passage about theatre in Ancient Greece and answer related comprehension questions (10). Locate, colour and create a key defining the major Greek cities, city states and regions on a map (5).* Create a timeline of Ancient Greece including ten important dates (10). Create a family tree of the Greek Gods and Goddesses ( 10).
5. Find words with Ancient Greek origins and create a word bank ( 5 words 5 points, 10 words ten points). 6. Write a daily routine or journal entry describing the daily life of a member of society of your choosing such as a female servant or a male soldier (10). Watch the five- minute documentary on the birth of the Olympics and answer the comprehension questions(10)*. Write your name with the Greek alphabet (5). Research Ancient Greek society structure and create a pyramid illustration depicting the societal structure (5). Complete the cloze passage exercise to move on to the B- Layer (10).

Create your own drama mask to be used in either a Greek comedy or tragedy, and explain why you chose this particular design for the genre (15). 12. Create a mock Facebookor Myspaceprofile for a Greek God or Goddess. Include a picture, personal information such as interests and include wall posts from other Gods and Goddesses within the Greek pantheon (15). 13. From the map activity in Kappa- layer pick a city state such as Athens or Sparta and create a tourist poster or leaflet advertising the key landmarks (15).
  • 20. 14. Write a newspaper article about one of the main battles or heroes of Greek history (15). 15. Research what democracy meant in Athens and/or what autocracy meant in Sparta (15). 16. Students are to make up a virtual ‘time capsule’ which will be used to tell people today about the everyday life, culture and beliefs of people in Ancient Greece. Beside each object they are to write one sentence explaining why this object was important in Ancient Greece (15).
  • 21. CONGRATULATIONS! You have conquered the challenges of the Beta- Layer successfully. You can now progress from mortal strength activities to those of the demi-gods. Good Luck as you proceed to the Alpha- Layer!
  • 22. A- Layer Maximum 40 points in this layer   Choose ONE of the following:  17. Create a play about a myth or an actual event in Greek history. It must conform to the conventions of a comedy or tragedy play (20) 18. You are an event planner for a wealthy Greek family. You are to plan an invitation and itinerary for an event of your choosing. In this you must refer to the dress code, the entertainment and menu for the event (20). 19. You are to create two letters to the editor debating women’s right to vote in Ancient Greece. One letter is to debate the “ for” argument and one letter to debate the “ against” argument (20).
  • 23. A- Layer 20. You are almost there! The final compulsory assessmentinvolves a one-on-one interview with your teacher to determine what you have learned in this topic. BONUS: Answer the question of the day each day to receive extra bonus prizes.
